Specialty pistols and what you use them for?

Hmpf. So you’re saying SSK made a product, and therefore has that expense tied up….but has not sold to recoup said expenses and bank any profit?
You lost me there. Could you elaborate a bit?
Per their statements it sounds like they are making them but are still trying to mail down final product. Maybe working out some bugs in the manufacturing process. They haven’t been very forthcoming with information though. If I had money invested I would be a very unhappy person.

I’m saying they have made internal pre production examples, it just hasn’t made it to production yet. They have videos on YouTube shooting them.

I've got a couple of SP. Oldest is a SBH with a 10" barrel. Took my first deer with that and then a few more besides.

My other SP is a 14" Contender in 35 Rem. It took several deer. Handloaded a 200gr Hornady RN over H322 and pushed it to the limit. The Contender took it with ease and delivered very good accuracy.

Tried to take coyote with a 14" 223 barrel on the Contender, but the coy dogs were smarter than I and never came in.

Still have both guns. These days the Contender wears a 10" 44 mag barrel most of the time.

As I've gotten older, I had a 35 Rem carbine barrel made by EABCO for the Contender and hung it on a second Contender frame. It takes the same loads the handgun used and is even more accurate. It hasn't taken anything yet in spite of the fact that we can now use rifles for deer in this part of NY. Could use a 308 or 30-06 rifle I suppose, but the shorter range 35 Rem is better suited for this area.

I own a few specialty pistols. I enjoy hunting and just going to the range and shooting bolt action and single shot pistols. I especially enjoy the RPM XL Hunter and the Anschutz Exemplar. They are both .22 long rifle and they are way more accurate than I am. They will both shoot dime size groups at 50 yards. I have had the RPM Xl for awhile. It is one of the best made firearms, out there. It approaches a custom, if it’s not. It is well put together, beautifully finished, very tight tolerances, locks up like a bank vault and a trigger that is light and breaks like a glass rod.I think the RPM and Rex Merrills are long out of production now. There may be a very few for sale, every now and then, on the auction sites. There is not a whole lot of information on them. From what I can find, believe they were ever made in great quantities. I wish I could find a center fire barrel in 7mm benchrest or something along that line. I have a scope, Talley mounts and rings for it but I prefer the open sights for my hunting and range shooting. Specialty pistols, like these have always sparked my interest and they are just fun to hunt with and shoot.

Hello all,
I've been a handgun hunter off and on for all my adult life, primarily with a 7.5" Ruger redhawk. Taken lots of deer with it, and used various 22lr and other handguns for small game. But I've never owned a specialty pistol, no contenders, or xp 101s, or anything else. I've been very interested in them forever though, and I'm curious, what are your favorite specialty pistols, and the intended uses you own them for?

I want a encore, but cost has driven me away several times, and I rationalize away building a bolt pistol with using rifles. What am I missing out on?

Perspective is an interesting thing. Due to its impracticality (for me) to carry in a traditional manner for very long, I personally would consider a revolver with a 7 1/2" barrel a specialty pistol. With a single exception, my hunting revolvers all have 4 3/4" or 5 1/2" barrels. The single exception is a 7 1/2" SA that I used once for hunting then decided it was too ungainly for me.

By the time you've gotten used to carrying a 7.5" revolver it's a pretty specialty situation. The woods I hunt are thick and a pistol is often as good as a rifle, with shots less than 60 yards...

Yeah a 7-1/2" revolver is pretty similar in size and weight to a 10" Contender.

I have an encore 14 inches barrels in in 223 & 25-06 .I have took the 25-06 deer hunting the last 2 years but no luck with it yet.I bought some 34 grain bowler bullets to play with in the 223 .I just hope the twist rate o the barrel will work with them.

I have a Wichita silhouette pistol in 7mm IHMSA Rimmed (the 30-30 case necked to 7mm with a sharper shoulder - .375 Winchester cases are stronger and stretch less) that I used for years when I was active in the sport.
I mounted a Burris 5X scope and used it to take a pronghorn in SD in, I think, 1982.
The backstrap is rather sharp on the upper corners and if you load it anywhere near it's potential and shoot it bare-handed, it will hurt you. I wore a fingerless glove with a half-moon shaped piece of inner tube cushioning the web of my hand.
A reasonably comfortable. very accurate and flat-shooting load is the 139gr Hornady at 1720fps.

Hello Ernie, still hanging in there. Not much shooting over the last few years, lost some interest I guess. Not many shooters around the area.
Never got the second PTA Action done either. Never shot the 6.5 pcr either.
Be well my friend.

Head to Gillette in June and shoot WY-SHOT with me. Steel and prairie dogs!

I have a G1 Contender and 3 barrels: 10" .22LR, 10" .357 Max., and 14" ported 7-30 Waters. All acquired when I was into IHMSA, then added a 1.25-4X scope on the 7-30 Waters for hunting. Took a small Georgia doe with the .357 Max barrel, and a doe antelope and a small Mule deer buck with the 7-30 Waters. Buck was at just over 200-yds with crossed sticks. I've ordered a 24" EABCO barrel in 7-30 Waters and a set of carbine stocks. Should be an interesting gun when I get it put together.
