The head of Oregon CCRKBA used the term "sport utility rifles" in reference to the arms banned by the AWB.
-------------------
"That said, Democrats who vote to extend the Clinton ban on semi-automatic
sport utility rifles and magazines that hold more than ten rounds will be
dropping any pretense that they support the rights of their constituents to
own firearms," Gottlieb said, "and gun owners will not forget.
----------------

I rather liked the term. It combines "sport" (= civilian usage), with "utility" (= military style).
Sounds a whole lot better than "assault rifle" too. Good for explaining things to antis.

What do you guys think?

I dunno, it sounds like they just use more gas than conventional rifles...

I'd be happy to just call them all sporting rifles, or something.

And, all the studies on SUV and how unsafe they are.. just change on letter and poof.... a factoid that anti's would love.. S.U.V. (scratch the v out put a R in) does x amount if damage a year.

Then you have the plus side.. good advertising...
Do you have the newest hottest and ultimate accessory for your SUV?
If you have a S.U.V. you would be crazy not to get an S.U.R.

And with all of the colors available for stocks now — are you thinking what I'm thinking? The time to start the advertising campaign is now. The Hot New Accessory this year is a rifle to go with the family car! The well-appointed yuppie couple will now each need a pager, a cell phone, a PDA/Palm Pilot, a laptop, a Coach handbag or wallet, and a rifle — a Sport Utility Rifle is "it" for Homeland Defense Chic.

Armalite gives out toasters; maybe Ford and Chevy will start giving out Armalites! Let's see:

Lincoln/Mercury: Bushy

Cadillac: Colt

BMW: Rock River

and we'll hear discussions about "which truck gun to buy for my Hummer" on Car Talk, on NPR! {Answer = if you can afford a Hummer, you can afford Full-Auto :D }

Here are a couple of suggested bumper stickers for owners of Sport Utility Rifles:

CCRKBA and SAF are "sister orgs", national in scope, based out of WA state. Alan Gottlieb is the founder...and my boss, because I'm the California field rep for CCRKBA and a registered state lobbyist.

CCRKBA is the political 501(c)(4) wing, while SAF (Second Amendment Foundation) is the legal/educational wing under a 501(c)(3) status. The two sides work with each other while making sure the money isn't mixed; where functions are mixed, the "penalty" is against CCRKBA because to mix SAF's tax-deductable resources with the non-tax-deductable political functions would be a big no-no - the sort of thing Nadja and I caught the "Million Mom March" doing and basically destroyed them as an independent org.

SAF money supported the Ohio CCW lawsuits that didn't exactly win, but pressured the legislature into passing shall-issue because of the final court decision's support for open carry . SAF is also funding a CCW legal action in California right now, with more planned.

The KelTec SU16 is the ultimate sport utility rifle. Others would include mini 14/30, Marlin Camp semi auto carbines, Beretta cx4, KelTec subs. Kind of military-lite. I like it, I don't think AR's and AK's fit the category. They're military rifles.

I don't like it.
It is "spin." I don't feel it necessary to use "spin" to justify my ownership of guns.

I'm in 100% agreement with the above. Political Correctness is now invading even RKBA?

Yeah, having "Sport" in there makes one think of "Sporting Purposes." I don't think we need to do anything to reinforce a fence-sitter's thinking about sporting purposes being okay, but that's all.

I could go for Utility Rifle, General-purpose Rifle, or just Rifle.

Hmmmm. I think of it this way:

1) Older/traditionally configured ARs, M1As, M1s, AKs, etc. are like the 4wd pickup trucks us ole bubbas have been driving for a few decades before the SUV craze hit. These will continue to be the "bubba SUVs".

2) The prep crowds, who never take their 4x4s off the pavement, will want the "sexier/trendier" SURs like the new Berretta Storms.

I think we have this marketing thing figured out guys!

I think an HK would be most appropriate for a BMW, while a Walther would be best with a Mercedes (although Walther doesn't really make a rifle that fits in the category - although the WA2000 sniper rifle comes to mind).

If you happen to be one of those silly people who bought a Yugo (the car), back in the 80's, you'd be best suited with a Yugo SKS, naturally.

VW's of all types would be best matched with a Mauser (again, not exactly a semi-auto,mag fed, but oh well).

The truly discriminating Hummer owner would only be seen carrying a COLT M-16A2 or M4.

Owners of Land Rovers would be best paired with an SA80.

Anyone dumb enough to own a Citroen doesn't deserve to own a gun, but for the sake of arguement, we'll give them a FA-MAS.

Cadillac owners should have M-1A's.

People who buy the Kia SUV should buy another Korean product, the DaeWoo K2.

Jeep owners would undoubtedly be best off with a Garand. You've got to admit, that's the most natural pair of the bunch.

Frank

As long as my little Neon doesn't limit the guns I can own (but I would have taken even an Oly Arms plinker from the car dealership), I'm fine with it. And I stand corrected on the BMW thing. :D

After I get that CMP M1, I should probably get a Jeep to go with it.
