Rant. :banghead:

At the range yesterday, trying very hard to poke small holes into small targets.

Alongside comes three mall ninjas, with a single hi-cap 9mm pistol and a 100 round box of Wallyworld ammo.

In goes a 17 round mag and the blasting begins.

The cardboard is 28" square. The stick-on, reactive target is 8" in diameter.

Rounds are hitting all over the cardboard. Many are in the dirt below and to each side of the cardboard. The target frame shakes from being hit.

The reactive bullseye remains clean and untouched except for one single hole near the edge.

Seventeen rounds later, the magazine now empty, the shooter turns to his partners and proudly exclaims, "Awesome, dude!"

A wonderful display of learned skills that I see more and more of these days.

Sigh.

I'm getting old. Rant over.

Well, at least he did not point the gun in your direction or something else stupid!
I had to yell yesterday at some 20 year old to keep his loaded AK clone on line and not fiddle with his body with that gun 4 feet behind the table. :what:
His response: YOU have to treat me with respect!
Little punk *** was lucky I didn’t stick that thing up his …….:fire:

They are young gun owners, quit you're whining and give them your support. America desparately needs more gunowners, don't break down and turn against our own. You being a self proclaimed older feller, this should go without saying.

Then teach them that 17 extremely fast misses are of less value than one well placed shot. Sometimes just blasting is fun though, it just is.

As for the safety nimrod MDW mentioned. I'd say something like this to the young punk. Respect is provided when it's worthy. Start handling that gun safely and you'll get it.....kapeesh. Better yet, shove it up his bum, he sounds pretty deserving.

BTW, I did some fast magazine emptying procedures this week and put all of them on target. So HAH! With my CCW no less. The Halloween pumpkin didn't make it either. Great splatter with JHP rounds.

As long as they were not endangering you or others, I'd say that there are far more important things in life to spend energy on.

Is it annoying? Oh, sure.

And is it within their rights to do what they seem to be enjoying while you are doing what you seem to be enjoying? Yep.

Yes, it can be irritating... But I just wait until they have an empty clip before I shoot. It's just easier then ruining my day by getting all bent out of shape about some young guys doing what I very likely did myself when I was young.

I would be annoyed with that as well. But, it's not for me to pass judgment on how someone else is enjoying their freedom to own and shoot firearms as long as they are obeying the range rules and being safe. Once they get this kind of thing out of their system, most likely they will settle down and become "serious" shooters like the old fart who was next to them at the range.

sometimes you gotta go bang...alot...I've been guilty of a little"rapid fire"..although I usually hit what I shoot at.
One thing I find distracting is at IDPA,when some of our guys who are really good, shoot fast and make hits. Then a new guy who thinks iot's easy because we're so close, they shoot fast and hit nothing......although it does sound good.
One range I belong to has 2 separate handgun ranges. One is a "combat" range, for double taps and rapid fire. The other is a 25-100 yard bullseye type range. So shooters don't get on eachother's nerves.

reminds me of the time when i first started shooting (many years ago) - i got yelled at by an older gent on the range for doing the same.

you grow out of it. it is fun for a first-timer.

a friendly chat next time might be helpful ... "i know it's a lot of fun to do that, but it could be unsafe if you don't know where your bullets are going. if you have to defend yourself, is that how you are going to shoot?" or something like that.

mjrodney - give 'em time. It is called maturity. But, you know, as long as it is done legally and ethically, whatever people do with firearms that brings them joy should be tolerable. It may grate a little but we (older folk) sometimes need to grin and bear it. I wonder if I have any shooting habits that drive my brother nutz?

Point two well made.

I am an old fart. :D

my dad was a anti gun freak, i tought myself with some help from the range locals, first gun was a ruger p90dc as immbarssing as it is i cocked the slide back and didnt know how to make it close, they were understanding and patient with me :) now i have "to many" guns and im still learning anyone got any good info on sighting in a scope? lol

I think a word of advice on how to get those bullets might of broken the ice, some shooters honestly do not realize what that thing on the end of the barrel is for. Once they learn it is called a front sight and a couple of pointers on sight alignment and sight picture can turn a blaster into a shooter. If they blow you off, at least you attempted to welcome a person into the shooting society.

Now I have no tolerance on poor weapons safety, once again a quick class in safe weapon handling can literally save the day. As a crusty shooter I welcome the opportunity to provide assistance. Sometimes it is accepted, sometimes not. Bottom line, they spent the money, actually found the proper ammo and paid for the range time. Safety is everyone's concern, they just have to be taught.

Strike up a conversation
Compliment their gun and ask if you can shoot it, if they don't offer first
Put two or three slow fire rounds on target
Compliment the sights on their gun
Thank them and go back to your lane
Watch as they try to repeat your performance

Jimmy, the link contains some excerpts from posts made by Gecko45 on the GlockTalk forums awhile back, and is where the term "mall ninja" originated.

Basically it's an unexperienced and enthusiastic firearm owner who pretends to be a seasoned "operator", and dresses himself and his guns according to how, in his mind, such a person would.

I think we have all been there at one time. Cut him some slack as long as he's safe. Awesome Dude!

They are kids. Kids watch movies. Kids believe what they see in movies. Kids mimic what they see in movies. Eventually, they will grow up. Believe it or not, you might have been the same way when you were their age.

I'll admit being a younger gun owner (22 tomorrow) that one of the first things I wanted to do when I first shot a gun was to spray and pray. After the first few times, it got boring and I started to be more concered over actually hitting my target one shot at a time. Sometimes practice double taps. I think it's just new gun owner envy kind of like rebbing up a new car.

Also whats wrong with wallyworld ammo? I've bought some highend stuff in the past, and I haven't had a single problem with wallyworld ammo, it's cheap as well.

Thanks Mannix, that is what I suspected but we all know what happens when we ASSUME anything. Still unable to access the link though.
