What are the advantages of a Springfield M1A Socom vs the Scout Squad version and vice versa? I will be looking into obtaining one before November, and I was wondering which one would be better to have.

One of the things I am wondering about is the difference in size. The Scout Squad has a 2" longer barrel, but how much more velocity, and accuracy does this add? Is it noticeable?

Another thing I am wondering about is if there are tactical flashlights and laser pointers that are available for the scout squad.

Thanks for any help.

The Scout rifle is better choice than the SOCOM for the longer range stuff (IIRC the Scout shoots about even with the regular length version out to about 600m, out to 800m+ the regular length barrel is a better choice). There are plenty of aftermarket stocks that can be put on it to give you a full assortment of rails to fill with all sorts of goodies.

I have not been a fan of the SOCOM 16....lotta muzzle blast and noise out the front end. But there are those who love theirs.....to each their own.

What companies make stocks for m1As?

edit:
Well, I have found some companies such as sage, but these stocks cost $600 plus. 'I dont want to spend that much just to get a rail on an M14. Are there any other ways to add on light and laser pointers?

I didn't mind my SOCOM, but I shoot my scout more than my other M1As. One thing to be aware of. The SOCOM has a proprietary muzzle brake. With the 18 or 22 inch barrel, you can use any aftermarket brake, flash hider or other muzzle device designed for the M14.

I have a Bush rifle which is the Scout Squad without the forward mounting rail.
Of my three M1A rifles it gets the most use now that Match shooting with an M14 copy gets one grilled and branded as a fuddy duddy.

If you swap out the brake on a scout with a vortex flash hider, the overall length is pretty close to a Socom.

Fulton Armory sells some rail options for the M1A. Still fairly spendy though. A railed replacement for the forward sling mount is $60, a single rail upper handguard is $250, and individual rail segments for tat are $20.

Smith Enterprises sells a somewhat less expensive kit that you can use to modify your stock with to add forearm mounted rails. Still in the ~ $200 range.
