I would also pick a milled AK, like an Arsenal, or better, a Valmet. in 7.62x39mm
ak47 or Springfield M1A for SHTF

I congratulate you for your selection of the M1A and finding a pretty good price for one. My go-to rifle is an M1A scout with the 18" barrel. I am building a second M14, but this one will be with a 22" barrel and will primarily serve as a "game" gun for high power.
Once you have yourself squared away, the best thing you can do is building a little community. Get your neighbor or shooting buddy down the street into the same line of thinking, and "pair up" on getting gear. Solar electric equipment, training, communications stuff, food, water purification gear, stuff like that.

Well hate to disappoint the M1A supporters but I picked up my Arsenal AK yesterday. I am very pleased with the gun, thought this would be my only AK but something tells me I might spring for another one down the road 
My latter post has not changed, I still think the next rifle I will get is going to be an LWRC, I just don't known what caliber yet, def. not the .223. I am going to see what they are coming out with, rumors are stirring that a .338 is in the works.
If I can hold myself to these two guns, the AK and LWRC, I think Ill be good-to-go and should focus on stocking ammo and other essentials (already have .22 rifle and some great handguns).
