I just got my 45 acp tac this passed tuesday. Went to the range yesterday and put 200 rounds through it and i loved it. This is my first pistol and am glad i picked this up. Debating on getting a 9mm for target practice tosave on ammo but dont know yet.

Good choice.I was in doubt at first but the xd caught my fancy.I think it will be a fun gun to play around and carry as well later on when i get use to it.The beaver tail in the back is the only part i am not fond of,but with some practice who knows maybe i will enjoy it.I wonder if i could get one without a beaver tail safety hummmm?

pablo,

That grip safety on the XD is not a beavertail grip safety. There is no beavertail, as we are used to seeing on a 1911, on this gun. Even though the grip safety is similar to a beavertail grip safety on a 1911, it's operation is quite different. The beavertail grip safety on a 1911 prevents the triggerbow from moving to the rear and pushing against the sear, thus releasing the hammer. On the XD the grip safety prevents the arm, holding the firing pin in the cocked position, from releasing and striking the primer. Taking the grip safety out of the XD would eliminate one of the guns strongest points. I have been shooting mine for quite a while now and have never had any problems with my grip not depressing the safety, thus preventing it from firing.

The grip safty also keeps the slide from opening when holstering the pistol. This might not be a big deal to most but i have a generic holster i use at the range which is a little small for this gun.

congrats to all the new xd owners, glad to have ya'll as part of the xd family! happy shooting! i am sure ya'll will enjoy them and they will serve you a long time, that is if they are anything like the xd's i own!

Nothing wrong with springifeld .45. I've owned several, shot many.. they're fine... personally I prefer to Les Baers, but Lord are they expensive... and he is crankky about 20 line checkering.. which I prefer over 30 line.. I've been shooting checkered 45's since the mid 70's and you can't beat the control you get with checkered... it keeps the .45 from moving around in your hands.. far better then stippling.. and about anything else.

Also don't forget high Vis sights... and having a reputable Smith take a look to check the ramp, TJ, etc etc etc etc.

Frankly I wouldn't give you .50 cents for a Springfield MIA.. but their .45s are good!

If you're not family with the Weatehr stance, it's something to look into. Been long proven since the 70's when it broght into being by BW.. And if you'd like, got plenty of loads for the .45. I practice with the old H&G SWC. (200 grn) but since I'm getting old and cranky.. I also like a 155 grn SWC that I load lighter when the aches and pains act up. ;)

Well I take that back, there is one round I will NOT post the load for.. it's shall we say.... ahhhh little on the hot side! ;)

My wife surprised me with an XD 45 ACP and a Surefire for Christmas this year :).

I've shot 300 or so hand loads through it without a problem.

I pounced on one myself (service model) a couple of weeks ago for $469 with gear, which seemed to be a good price. It is my first polymer handgun, and seems to be a very good one!

Fit and finish seem to be very good. The trigger is acceptable, although it will not hold a candle to my 1911's. SA will do a trigger job to 4~4.5 pounds for $95 according to their website. I plan to do more dry firing and shooting before making this decision.

Regards!

Jamie

I got mine for 499+Sam back when they first came out. I love it! I've actually stopped looking through the pistol case at the local shop, I'm so happy with this pistol.

Oh, BTW: hang the loader on the mag holder upside down, and it makes a ghetto-ish thrid mag holder.

Glock 21 Short Frame Vs. Springfield Xd .45

I have been in law enforcement for over 12 years now and have used two weapons for duty. The first was a Glock 21 and the second was a Kimber TLE. I used the Glock 21 for over 5 years with no malfunctions at all. I have used a Kimber TLE for 6 years and have had two malfunctions. Both were my fault due to not cleaning the weapon after two severe sand storms. I'm switching back to a Glock 21 SF because I don't want to worry about my gun going off or not due to bad wheather. Before I bought the Glock 21 SF I looked at the Springfield XD .45 service and tactical models. True the grip does feel a bit smaller that the Glock 21 SF, but the trigger on the Springfield feels like crap to me. The Glock 21 SF has a clear, clean, crisp trigger granted a bit heavy. The Springfield XD is mushy and hell. There is no crispness to the trigger and it just feels like mush until it goes off. I also don't like the grip safety on the springfield. It is useless. There is no reason for a gun to go off if your finger is off the trigger. The Glock has all the safetys you need. There is no other semi-auto pistol that can take the abuse of a Glock and go off everytime. It may be ugly, not as accurate as a 1911 or Springfield, but it will kill the bad guy everytime without fail. I do not believe a Glock is a compitition type weapon, but it is a true combat firearm. For law enforcement use there is nothing better.

well then, welcome to the site

Springfield XD40 plus 9mm conversion
Springfield Ultracompact .45
Kimber Raptor .45 plus .22 conversion
Walther P38 9mm from WWII

....then there's some long guns....

I think the XD45 is one of the best .45 for it's price.
However, the Glock 21 SF has it's nose a little bit further!

Someone compare for me...

their 1911 SA 45 and their XD 45 -accuracy? Rapid fire? Feel?

Glock "Perfection"

That's why so many ND's with 'em!

Seriously, I had a G23 for a while and there was nothing wrong with it. I have a XD45 now and there isn't anything wrong with it either. Folks have a right to choose what suits them I guess without someone calling it "crap"...come on now! Be nice to your fellow THR members.

By the way Dep1040, if you're trigger finger is the only safety you need, how would you feel about carrying a cocked and locked Series 80 Colt's Gov't model with the safety off?

I've been thinking long and hard about one of these for carry lately. I currently have a CZ P-01 as my carry gun, but I'm sort of phasing out 9mm; nothing against the round (which has its strong points, to be sure), but I have just been enjoying shooting .45 ACP so much lately.

I don't want to carry a Sig P220 because it seems to be the size of a small boat anchor, and I'm none too keen on carrying a 1911 because they weigh more than I care to have strapped to my body for hours on end. That leaves me with the plastic guns. Glocks are a no-go because, frankly, even the thought of holding one makes my hand uncomfortable, and although the M&P feels good in the hand, there's something about it that doesn't quite match up with me (maybe its that the trigger feels a little flimsy). Thus, all roads seem to lead to the XD, or, at any rate, it's the only other gun I would seriously consider. I just might see one of these in my not-too far off future....

Johnny,

Take a look see. I own a few of the XDs and have thought them wonderful pistolas. :)

To me, they are like Corollas rather than a too fancy automobile. They are light on the wallet, and if cared for, will take you wherever you want to go. Maybe not in the most stylish fashion to be sure, but if you had to drive a car that was 5 years old with 60 grand on the odometer through a desert, would you choose a BMW with a great paint job, or something a little more weather beaten, but you knew you changed the oil every 3K miles?

OK, I broke down today and just bought one, the compact version. Thus ends my streak of refusing to buy plastic guns, I guess; I just folded like a cheap suit on this one. It fits my hand perfectly, how it points is just so natural that it's almost spooky, and it's light. Anyway, I'm taking it out tomorrow, and I'm ecstatic.

Hi Guys,

I bought an XD 45 4 inch service a couple of weeks ago. Put 300 rounds through it with no misfires of any kind.

Great ergonomically. The grip is reminiscent of a Hi Power. As accurate as a pistol with combat sights can be (with me at the trigger anyway). Fit and finish is just what you would expect.

Loaded it with Gold Dots and slipped it into a Galco FLETCH holster. Whenever it is possible for me to carry a full size pistol it is on my hip.

This a long winded way to say that I highly recommend this pistol. Personally I am chomping at the bit to give it another trip to the range. Maybe tomorrow.

I bought service one last year about the same time I bought a new S&W M&P .45. The high bore axis does give me more felt recoil but my biggest complaint is that it only feeds round nose 230s. The more I shoot them both, the more I prefer the M&P. I may sell the XD.

SgtRich,

Thank you.

I really like it. easy to shoot well. Durable and at 30 feet the bullseye becomes a giant hole.

It is my favorite pistol.

I have another 300 rounds ready to go. Can't wait for tomorrow!

Shoot often..shoot straight!
