Springfield XD-9 or Ruger SR9...?

I am in the market for a new 9mm autoloader, Price range $550 and lower.

I've been looking an the XD-9 for about a year now an have almost made up my mind to get it, but the pistol had two looming drawback (for me) which are holding be back.
1. Non-adjustable sights (on all of the ones I've seen)
2. do not qualify for IDPA SSR competition.

So now I am looking at Ruger's new SR9.
DAO, adjustable sights, and ok reviews.

I'm kind of in that Coin toss zone.

BTW: How good are the fixed sights on the XD?
 
The XD isnt bad. Ive fired both and own one (guess!). Its a matter of personal liking and taste. You can get adjustable sites for the XD. As for the competition, what does the XD do/have that disqualifies it from that competition that the SR9 doesnt (or similar reversed arguement)? :)
 
The XD is classified as single action by the IDPA officials. So it qualifies for ESR matches.
 
I think you should read this guy Ayoob on the SR9 before you take the plunge and plop down $400.00. The SR9 is a work in progress, is Ruger offering you compensation for test driving it?
 
The SR9 is too new, with too many problems reported (including many on this forum, run a search). It's best to stay clear of most new guns until at least a 1yr or so of Beta testing by the public. I've been trying to "inform" a friend of mine who was ready to "jump" on an SR9. After reading the SR9 reports, he's getting an XD9:evil:

I've had an XD9 for many years, reliable, accurate, fits my hand perfect. Factory sights on the XD9 are fine, but I replaced them with Truglo TFO sights, which are great for the range or night-time S/D.
 
Why not get the XD and shoot it in its classification? In our matches it is the same course of fire anyway. I don't understand the hesitation folks have about that.

Of course, being a Kool Aid drinker, its my duty to point out that a Glock would solve your problem! :cool:
 
I own a 5" XD Tactical and love it.

I will admit I was pretty excited about the Ruger SR9. I read all the hype and watched all the videos and couldn't wait to see one first hand. Today my gun shop got some more SR9s in and while I have not fired one... I have to admit I was very disappointed. It didn't seem to as thin as people hyped it up to be, and the over all quality didn't seem to be there.

As much as I don't like Glocks, I would buy one before I would an SR9. The SR9 is just too new, and it would be best to wait for a 2nd or 3rd generation. You might also look at the S&W M&P, if you don't like the XD or Glock.
 
I recommend the XD9.
It has been around long enough to have proven itself many times over.
In fact, the XD9 and the S&W M&P9 are the next best thing to the Glock G17.

Like the others have said above....the SR9 is still too new and doesn't have all the bugs worked out just yet.

Right now I would suggest the XD-9 since it has had enough time (I feel anyway) to prove itself as a reliable gun. The SR-9 may turn out to be the best of the new wonder nine's when compared to the XD and S&W but it hasn't gotten there yet.

You should also look at the S&W M&P9...
 
I've had a XD9 for over a year now and prob 6-8000 rounds through it. Most of that has been my reloads. My only issue was the front site...the white dot fell out of it. No big deal, i repainted it and it works great for me (plus I will likely be getting night sites anyways). The sites, for me needed no adjustment and were right on. Adjustable are available (I think). It has been a true work horse.

Never been a fan of the Ruger semi-autos. This may be different...kinda would like them to work out the kinks first

The IDPA part is a bummer. I also shoot IDPA. I know technically about the differences between the Glock trigger setup and the XD but functionally They are nearly identical and should be in the same catagory (IMHO)
 
I havent fired an XD9 but I can tell you that my SR9 is superb in every aspect. 1050 worry free rounds out of her with not one hiccup of any sort. Im happy with my choice and stand by the SR9 as a great firearm. If at all possible try and atleast rent one at a range or just hold one and caress it. Opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one and they all stink
 
SR9 is good, but....

I would go with the XD as it is "tried and true." Millions of rounds, thousands of happy customers.

My dad loves his new SR9, but it just isn't proven yet (and Ayoob's article raises some questions).
 
I'm usually a dyed in the wool Ruger fan and my everyday carry gun is a P97 .45, but for a new 9MM I'd get the XD. Far too many problems with Ruger's two latest autos, both 345 and the SR9. JMO
 
I think I might hold off on the SR9, until Ruger shows more support for the buyers that are having problems with theirs. You can read about the "peening" and magazine problems over on Rugerfourm.com

Neither. S&W M&P. I am supprise anyone is considering buying any other polymer these days.
 
Thanks. I'll go with the XD for now.

As for the glock and the M&P. The glock doesn't feel good when I hold it, and the M&P is out of my price range... If I had the money it would definitely be my third choice though.
 
M&P too pricey?

With the current $50 rebate, I paid less than a Glock ($449) for my S&W M&P...........got 5 mags, a holster, and a mag pouch too.
 
I traded an XD9 for a SR9, and I'm very glad I did.

Why? I use a high thumb grip and that just doesn't work with the XD9 and it's Sig style slide release. Also, the XD9 has a bulky disassembly lever that digs into my tender hips when carried IWB. The sites were dead on so fixed sights was never an issue for me. Still, the XD9 was 100% reliable and had a great grip.

On the other hand, I like the SR9 grip even better, it conceals better (thinner), is more comfortable to shoot and carry, has an adjustable backstrap and has extra safety features I like in a carry gun. The SR9 has adjustable sights, but I haven't touched them since I bought the gun.

You won't go wrong with either one. I suggest you choose the one that fits your hand best, and that points more naturally for YOU!
 
Don't know if you have a preference or not, but the XD is a six oclock site. Not sure about the SR9
 
Go with the XD, which is a proven weapon.

As others have noted, the Ruger has yet to prove itself, and there have been some negative reports on it from multiple reliable sources.
 
You should read the Guns&Ammo April/May issue of Handguns about the 15,000-round torture test of the SR9. www.handgunsmag.com I was impressed! I also have a XD9 sub-compact that we got for my wife to shoot. It's a great shooter. Put probably over a thousand through it rounds without a glitch. I'm sure you would rather have the full size for competition.

Now I am considering the Couger 9mm :rolleyes: Since I've already given up on SSR...
