I'm looking to buy an entry level AR 15 flat top. I narrowed it down to these 2 & they are within $50 of each other. Any personal experience with either brand?

How much? When you can get a Colt for $800 I'm not sure why you'd get anything else (barring something more specific like a varmint gun).

Windam Weaponry SRC-308

Both are excellent, but I bought a WW SRC-308 (flattop) about six months ago and I am impressed by the qualify and accuracy. If their AR-15s are similar, you can't go wrong.

My budget is about $600. This is just going to be a plinking / defensive AR. Which Colt are you refering to the 6720 with a light pencil barrel?

I've had a Windham Weaponry SRC for almost three years. It is an outstanding value, very well made, has had zero problems, repairs or issue in about 2,500 rounds. It's accurate, responsive and I like shooting it. Very good customer support, you call and a person answers.

Windham is a solid entry level rifle. This is mine.

As far as Ruger I'm just not a Ruger fan. I feel Stag & WW are better choices because they focus on just building ARs. S&W or Ruger make good handguns. Some of this is personal choice but I'm looking to get the best value for my new AR but still meeting my objectives.

Pretty much this.

In the $600 range, I'd be going PSA build all day long.

I've had a Stag for about three years and I've never regretted my choice. I ordered the flat top piston model with the flip-up sights. Accurate and dependable.

Can't comment on the Stag but I have a WW rifle that I've been happy with, and would recommend the brand. I'm not sure exactly what model it is, it's a 16 inch barrel, 1:9 twist, carbine length gas system. It's been reliable, I've shot a variety of factory ammo and reloads, and so far it eats everything I feed it.

If you only have $600 I'd save up $200 more and get the Colt 6720. In the long run its worth it. Read up on the differences between tier 1 guns and others (better barrel steel, MPI testing, proper staking, and more). Its not just parts either, its the QC to weed out the bad parts.

Also, in a few years I think that $800 Colt will be worth far more.

I've owned Colts, Old Bushmasters ( which are the current WW company) and Stag Arms. I prefer the Stags and Old Bushmasters. Any of the three should be GTG. Buy what you like best.YMMV. tom.

I've had an S&W Sport for 4 month's now, already put 1000 rounds through it. Its an outstanding gun for the money....paid $640 out the door.

100% reliable and accurate.
