Steel/Polymer/Aluminum 9mm framed pistols

For just home defense are these pistols the best in there catergory?

For Steel framed
Browning Hi-Power

For Polymer framed
Glock17
HS2000/XD

For Aluminum framed

"The best" is too subjective. The only two things a pistol needs to do:

1. Feed all the rounds
2. Put them where your sight is (and not even exactly where your sight is.

Everything else (weight, capacity which affects grip, round, size, features, etc.) is subject to what you like and what you will be using it for.

The ones you listed will all meet the first two and, imo, only two requirements for a pistol.

All are fine quality firearms. If the gun is reliable, accurate and fits your hand it is the best gun for you. Stay with a quality product and you can't go wrong.

For home defense (HD) I like a short long-gun like a shotgun or carbine. If you HAVE to go with a pistol don't worry about weight, just conentrate on making sure everyone who may have to use it can do so well. In this regard 9mm is an excellent choice because it's not too much recoil for most people, is available in a wide variety of grip sizes and shapes and in very reliable guns.

I prefer CZs, YMMV, so find a range that rents and try them out

You might want to consider a HK USP and Walther p99 in the polymer category, particularly the USP if you want SA/DA (but you can get it in just about any configuration). There's also the sigpro if you want a polymer frame but hate the USP and P99 and glock and springfield.

The value of trying them yourself before you choose can't be overstated. The last thing you want at 3am with a burglar in the next room is a gun you picked on someone else's recommendation.

I would like to vote for the Springfield XD pistols for polymer frame as well. For some reason the XD fits me better than the Glock. This is just my opinion of course.

For a 9mm and most guns I do like the feel-weight of a steel slide and alloy frame. Like the same set up for my 38super 1911.

They are all good. The only 9 I shot and didn't like is the Beretta 9000F. And I tried so hard to like that gun.

There are no wrong choices in 9mm pistols from major manufacturers, or most minor ones either. You just have to figure out which ones you like. I like the Glock 19, but I have owned, or at least shot all the others mentioned, and they are all good. Some will fit you better than others, because we are all built differently, and you just have to be patient and shoot them all. Preferably other people's guns, and their ammo too, if you can get away with it.

I prefer steel guns. I own Browning and CZ's. However, my home defensse gun is a S&W model 457 in .45 cal. This gun has an aluminum frame. It was cheap and safer IMHO and it is incredibly reliable and overall safer than my nines.

If I were to choose a 9mm for a home defense gun it would be the CZ only due to the fact that it is double action. Gives you a little more safety than a SA like the BHP.

That being said, I used to live in the Central Valley of California. One night this nut case woman came knocking at my door at 3am. The fog was so think you couldn't see 10 feet. She was disoriented and probably stoned or drund and meant no harm. However, I was glad to have a .45 in my hand behind my back when I answered the door. The big bullet makes me feel better.

When my kids were little I never left anything with a cartridge in the chamber. Shooting your kids by mistake would not be something I could live with. Also, I think the sound of a pistol or shotgun slide racking is a major detterant.
