I got the FiL's stevens side x side, and it is having an issue I am having trouble figuring out. When I got it it would not open. Also the triggers would not "work" think move, acting like they have been dropped already.

To get it open I needed to take the stock off, and manually pull both hammers back (very not easy) then you could slide the release over open the gun. If you dry fire it the gun will not unlock (open) again. And you must try to crank those hammers back again from the back side of the gun.

As I understand things the hammers are cocked by the barrel being opened.....but I am not sure what it locking the barrel in place.

This close to taking it to someone, for no other reason then it is such a pain in the butt to cock the hammers by hand.

Why do you think it is locking up like this.

Re reading it I think I need to add, you can open it all day as long as a trigger is not pulled.

Are you using snap caps?

No, the barrels are removed and the stock as well.....so I am just holding "the action". I might try to get a video of what it is doing, I am horrid at explaining things. I will get the vice re mounted that will make filming it more easy I think.

To try to explain, to cock the hammers on this thing there is a little lever that an extension from the barrels push on, this in turn lifts up on a little lever, that little lever pushes on this "Y" looking like thing and that will move both hammers back, it also pushes on a little rod that will re apply the safety. When you close the barrels it will push on this little "button" and that will unlock the lever you push to the side to open the shot gun. You can open and close it all day long if the hammers have not fallen.

There is something inside there "not really made to take apart" that is also tripped when the hammers fall that will stop the lever to open the gun from moving. The way it LOOKS like it is made I don't think the hammers should be cocked before it can be opened, it looks like it would take about 40deg of barrel movement to cock the hammers, and the barrels will not move as you can't push the lever to open the the gun unless the barrels are cocked.

I think the video if I get time tonight and the vice mounted will help with my sucky shot at explaining this.

Not much activity here, but in the need for closure here is what the deal was.

I was stupid, or old and not thinking of taking photos so you are going to have to deal with my poor word picture.

The way this thing works is you open the gun, there is this little lip under the barrels that push on this little lever, that in turn pushes on this (Y) shaped bit of metal that cocks both hammers, it also pushes on a rod with spring to engage the safety when the gun is opened, there is another lever that is pushed that works the extractor.

My issue was after a hammer falls you could not move the lever over to open the gun back up, you had to pull the stock then with a screw driver (hard to do) cock the hammer, or hammers then you could unlock the gun.

To make a long story short and lots of fiddling, with dropping the hammers and watching how everything works in there, it was the safety that was messing up the works. There is a little pinned (U+L) shaped gizmo that was pinned to the Rec that was part of the safety. I am guessing over the years the pin had gotten rounded out....so it would ride a little high and not allow the bar to push it back far enough to engage the safety. I re rounded the hole, replaced with a steel bushing and all is right with the world again...so it was hanging on the sears for the triggers....I really wish I could find some pics of it.

The FiL is hot to shoot it now that I have it fixed, it will be on deck for the next lunch and shoot event with the family.
