In my failed attempts to obtain a Bersa Thunder, I was doing some reading and stumbled upon Steyr articles. One thing I noticed is they say the recoil is really not bad... which thats a good thing for me. I saw some pictures... I think they look cool.

I have to put all the looks aside and focus on, IS THIS THING RELIABLE? I know it's a bit more expensive than the Bersa from the listings I have read... a heck of a lot cheaper than the Glock though. Price is not a BIG issue, but I don't want to overspend and buy more gun that I actually need. I also dont want to be a cheapskate either.

Like I said, I originally was going to get a Bersa Thunder, I was in the shop with my credit card out, and they couldn't come up with one from their distributor... Would the Steyr be a good substitute? or quite possibly a better gun than the Bersa? I have heard the 9mm is a lot better self-defense round than .380, and if the recoil is managable, why not step up to the 9mm?

any thoughts??

edited to add: of course this is all contingent upon a local gunshop actually being able to get one... I did a search on that thing somebody suggested in another thread, and there were no Bersas availible, and it says they had 99+ of these. So I am thinking these might be a bit easier to obtain.

I own 3 steyrs, an M9, M40, and S9. I also own 5 glocks. The glocks except my 26 sit in the gun safe and I shoot my steyrs. The Steyr is the gun that glocks should have been and are several steps above the Bersa. Right now the price of the sterys is at an all time low, but when the new models come out I'm sure that will change.

Thanks for the input there... I am thinking tomorrow I am going to drop by that gunshop and see if they can come up with one of those... I don't know how much they want for them, or if the even have them...

But the search thing about the Bersas I did, from another thread somebody suggested, the local guy was asking less than that search turned up. (only he couldnt seem to come up with one) So speculating here, the Steyr should be affordable. Im excited :)

Best place to get a Steyr is from CDNN Investments

They don't have guns on their web site, but you can download a PDF of their catalog here http://www.cdnninvestments.com/dowournewcat.html

They have M40s, S40s and S9s for $299.99, M357s for $359.99 and M9s for $279.99

I have an M40 and an S40 and both are very reliable, accurate and well made.

I've had my S40 for 3 weeks now and I love it, it's now my main carry pistol.

There are 3 things I'm not real happy with, but I've learned my way around them, the placement of the safety, and the fact that the mags are so tight that they won't drop when released on their own if they are empty, and the position of the mag release itself.

I've manage to work my way around these shortcomings though just because the pistol is just a pleasure to shoot, well built, fits my hand perfectly, comfortable to carry, accurate, and so far very reliable.

If you were originally looking at getting a .380, you might want to go with the S9 in 9mm, while I'm very comfortable shooting the .40 S&W, it does have a bit more slap to it than a 9mm.

Yes the S9 is what I am leaning towards

It's rare that I look forward to a Monday! The lack of a FFL keeps me from catalog or internet orders. It is amazing how difficult it is to find things around here.

My M9 and my brothers M40 are top notch firearms....My favorite pistol on my stable to shoot. Recoil on the 9 is almost non existant.

All of my glock friends drool over it...and looking at a steyr side by side to a glock, i would venture to say they are lightyears ahead of glock in quality of manufacture.

Unbelievable pistols at an unbeatable price. I would like to buy another.

I paid $499 for mine!!! :what:

I can't believe the prices now!! For $499, I think it was the best value at the time, and at these prices, even better!!

By far the most ergonomic semi-auto on the market. I agree, it's the gun glock should have made..

Are they better than a CZ?
They seem like one hell of a buy, and even more so since so many of you guys have had good experiences with them.
I like my CZ but I am always looking for something better, tougher, more durable, etc.

The price seems great until you try and get parts, accs or use the warranty. These choices are limited.

When I went looking for a good carry gun I had actually put a Bersa Thunder in layaway. Well while I was paying on it I was doing some research and the general consensus was that you really don't want to get any small than a 9mm so I started looking at .45s. When I went into the gun shop and asked to see what they had in .45 everything they showed me in my price range was, well lets say not of good quality. So after some time looking they show me a Steyr M40. I really liked the gun the first time I picked it up, it just felt right, the sites where cool, it had a manual safety available, and it was smooth all over. As if that wasn't enough the gun is more accurate than I am and out of over 3000 rounds I have only had 2 FTE and I blame that on the WWB ammo I was using.

I already had a Ruger P89, but I wanted a 9mm that I could carry so I traded it off for a Sig P239 in 9mm. I have found it not to me as comfortable to carry as the larger M40. As good as the Sig is, and we all know their reputation, I have found myself looking to get rid of the Sig for a S9. They are real close in size and the S9 hold 10 round vs. the Sig's 8 and if I get a S40 mag I think I can make it hold 12:D, and like I said, the smooth round edges of the Steyr make it a joy to carry. I don't feel as if I am stepping down by getting rid of the Sig by any means, the Sig is a good gun and one day I'd like to get another (maybe a 228), but right know I want to take advantage of the price the Steyrs are at and the only way to do that is to part with the Sig.:(

If you go comparing the avialablity of parts and accs to say Glock your right, but parts can be picked up there thier dist., accessories are not hard to find, and I wouldn't know anything about the warrenty have not had to use it.:D

Which ever dealer you are going through will do the FFL transfer for you for a fee, usually $20-$30.

When you see him tomorrow just ask him what he charges for an FFL transfer fee, then ask if he has his papers on file with CDNN, if he does then from the store call up CDNN and tell them you will do the transfer through that dealer, they may ask to speak to him. If he doesn't have his papers filed with them then have him fax in his papers, then call and do the transfer. Once the pistol is shipped to him, he will have to run a Nics check on you before he can turn over the pistol.

Or contact CDNN directly. You can give the guy on the phone your zip code and he'll locate an FLL on file in your area. I'd say don't pay more than about $30 for a transfer.

I have 2 M40's and 1 M9 and I plan on getting more. parts and availibility should be getting better soon releasing new pistol probably using same parts minus frame which will have rail on it. an adapter for rail is also supposed to be making its way across the atlantic soon.

for the price they are good. the recoil in 40S&W is not as punishing as with some guns.

another fine austrian pistol. be carefull they can be addictive.

Thought about the m9 for a long time. A local gun dealer is going out of business, Saturday I got an m9 & extra mag for $345 OTD. Don't think I done too bad at all. Can't wait to get it to the range. :D

I have about 6-700 rounds through my M9 with nary a problem.

I agree with RatFink about the safety. It is a bit odd to have to stick your finger inside the trigger guard to snick the safety up. But I am getting used to it.

I went shooting with a friend who is a Glock lover. He said he hated to admit it, but he liked the M9 better than his 17.

Kodiak AK,

The M is full size and S is compact.

And I agree with you about Jerry. He is my go-to man at CDNN. :)

Everyone always has good things to say about CDNN. I have always worked with Tracy at CDNN but I am sure Jerry is a good guy too. They are super profesional and have some of the cheapest shipping I have ever seen. The prices they are charging on the Steyr handguns make me sick. I wish I had bought my Steyrs for that kind of money.

I own three Steyr handguns, and plan to purchase at least one more in the near future. My M40, and S40 have never had any problems. My M9 had a few issues initially, but that was my fault. I have never found a gun that is so easy to shoot quickly. Between the light recoil and the short trigger reset this gun is made to shoot fast.

twoob, i paid $370 each for mine. :neener:

having not fired the S series, i liked my M9 very much. if we can get standard capacity magazines in 6 months, i just might have to re-buy another steyr.

I can't believe the S series has gone down below $300, when I got mine just a few weeks ago it was listed at around $330. I bought mine from a local dealer for $370 because after shipping and FFL transfer fee it would have been about $370 anyway.

I recently got the s40 with 2 extra mags for 349.00 from cdnn. I love the gun but I would suggest giving it a bath before shooting. i had a couple of jams at first but after a good oiling no problems. Does anyone know of accesories that are available. I am looking for a laser that might attach to the guns slots since it does not have a full rail . Also a good conceal holster or night sights
