Hi all,

Looks like a great forum here.

I just got back from the range; it was test time for the new Steyr M9. The gun felt good and shot good.

However, about 3/4s of the spent brass ended up on my head. :what: I even had one hot case that came down behind the top of my shooting glasses and wedged against nose.

Through other research, I found that this was a problem with earlier models and that Steyr had fixed it. Could it be that I am holding the gun wrong? I am pretty new to shooting (about 8 months or so), but this never happens when I shoot my H&K .45 USP.

I can't find any info on what serial number series denotes the fixed guns. My serial number is 0292xx. By the way, why is it that one is not supposed to list the full serial number of a gun? Forgery or fear of Big Brother??

Thanks for any help.

That is a later model gun---should have all the mods done to it already.

Put another couple hundred rounds through it and see if any problems iron themselves out before you go trying to fix it.

My Steyr M9 is 0263xx and I've had no problems with ejected brass. It all lands on my right side, conveniently close by.

I'm not completely sure why people don't like to give full S/N either (though I just go with the crowd), but I've also heard people wary about being accused of stealing a gun. Obviously it's easier to make such an accusation when you know the S/N of a gun.

You don't say whether you're left-handed or not. If you're shooting the gun in your left hand, I think you might well have a problem with the brass bouncing off your head, which would be slightly right of the gun. On the other hand, if you're shooting right-handed, IMHO there's some adjustment needed to the ejector/extractor.

one cure would be a new spring or guide rod and new spring but I dont know of anyone that makes them. checking the extractor could help. make sure the retaining pin is installed right behind the extractor. should be flush with extractor. other than that not sure what else. send it to diamond trail aka usa-steyr see if they can help.

what ammo are you using? changing the weight or power could help.
kinda interested to know what will help cause I am planning on picking up 1-2 steyr m9's to compliment my pair of m40's.

I am guessing you have an M9 with the greenish, parkerized slide (as opposed to the black polycoat-over-parkerized slide). Am I correct?

The early M-Series, less than serial number of about 8000, had a different angle milled at the back of the ejection port and had the non-polycoated slide. I had one of these guns and I too had brass in the face and on the head. After 8000 they milled more material and changed the angle and this corrected the problem.

It seems that Steyr has used early slides to build some of the more recently imported M9 and S40 models. They are identified by the greenish slide. I believe the serial numbers are in the 26,XXX and higher range.

People partially hide serial numbers simply for privacy and/or paranoia. Someone could maliciously report your gun stolen or something like that. One could ask why we do not use our real names on message forums as well.

Handgun:

In certain lights, the slide does look like a grayish-green color. It is definately not as black as the polymer.

mrapathy2000:

As for ammo, I used three types:

Federal 124g Hydrashocks
American Eagle (Federal) 115g FMJ
PMC 115g FMJ

Pretty consistent ejection path with all.
