Stranger in the woods

Sorry folks, but there is no tactically sound way to pick up a hitch-hiker. Let alone one in the middle of the woods with an odd story. Nothing wrong with walking. Nothing in the world. So let him keep on doing it.

considering the fact that many folks here on THR are associating
themselves with christians beliefs ... i find it amazing how many
here seem to be too paranoid or anxious to help someone.

(i only believe in Karma.
So far my deed/need ratio is near 2:1.
Maybe i will be in need in the future ....)

And has you pull away with the man in the bed you reach down and turn on the radio, it crackles and Glenn Miller's Moonlight serenade begins playing softly. Minutes later the music is abruptly interpreted by a public service bulletin, "Breaking news, a madman has just escaped from the local insane asylum and is thought to be hiding in the woods nearby. If you see him do not approach him he is thought to be armed and dangerous leave and contact your local police immediately."

FWIW I don't pick up hickhikers. The only place I give assistance is the Parks Highway, it's a bit like the ALCAN in that there are long hundred mile stretches with absolutely nothing, not even repeaters.

Every year I stop and pull about five people on average back onto the road. The only time I ever gave a ride was several weeks ago, it was absolute whiteout conditions below zero and this couple were old enough to be my grandparents and I truly thought that if I left them there I'd be hearing about their deaths on the news the next morning. Their car had a trashed rim and a bad flat, so I gave them a ride. At the speeds I usually take the pass into Fairbanks and the nature of the grades and curves had they tried to pull anything it would have ended us all.

Did the OP do the right thing? Its not what I would have done, I would have blown past and contacted the police. On the side of the road is one thing, alone in the woods is a different thing entirely.

Some people have a more secure comfort zone than others. I don't think the OP ever stepped beyond his comfort zone. I too beleave if we don't leave this world with more good done than bad we'll be out of balance.
If you attempt to train for as many possible situations as possible you are better able to provide assistence instead of 50 MPH blow off.

You can't be a good Christian and be paranoid? It is one thing to help somebody. It is another thing to help somebody that you feel may be a threat to you and do harm to you because of being in close proximity to you when you help them.

Helping someone who's car took a dive in a remote area is one thing, helping an odd looking guy with an even odder story who's demanding a ride is another. I've accepted rides in the past after car breakdowns, but I've never expected one, asked for one or stuck out a thumb. Nor have I ever given a hard luck story.

A lot of comments have been written about my post. In ending I would like to say that I did the best I could under the circumstances and I appreciate everyone's input. I hope this never happens to anyone else.

There is nothing wrong with helping a stranger as long as you don't put yourself or anyone else with you in danger. You helped this man in the safest way possible. I don't see anything you should regret.

There was a pretty lady wearing a nice floral print dress

Sorry Myles but ol' Aileen was as ugly as the ass end of a bear sewed up with grapevine.

All I have seen are mug shots. Based on those, I wouldn't take her to dog fight even if she promised to win. However, ugliness, as well as beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Better lighting. Better expression. Better, more accurate observation. And maybe age of the observer might be factors. Who knows what Myles saw? Have you never been mistaken in such matters? I have -- both ways.
