I have this Ruger here, the slide lock WILL NOT come out of the gun! I have tried everything that I can think of, short of a sledgehammer, to get this slide lock out of the gun so I can get the slide out.

I have noticed that there are a lot of people that have a hard time disassembling the Rugers, but I can not find anything on anyone having trouble getting the slide release out of the frame, unless they just didn't read the manual and follow the instructions.

HELP!!! What do I do?

Are you sliding your slide back about half way when you are trying to push the slide lock lever out? I have a P95 and that is how it works. When you slide the slide back there is a notch in the slide that will release the lever. Hope this helps.

Well.... I tried to get the slide release out of the gun by lining up the release with the half circle in the slide, and also I tried just holding back the slide to where the slide lock would usually lock the slide and pushing it out there, but no success with that either.

Every time I try to push it out, it moves about one sixteenth of an inch and will not go any farther. If I put some sort of pry bar under the slide release I can tell that it DEFINITELY is not going anywhere.

Try turning it so the lever is upside down with respect to the frame and do it. I think that it is the way it has to come out. I will get mine and take it down cause I don't remember off the top of my head. :banghead: HA HA poor memory at best. Lock firearm open with MAG removed. reach inside the ejection port and push the ejector down fully (little pin in the rear on the slide stop side) then the slide will move forward. Take slide apart and clean as normal. Reverse to assemble and lock the slide open, and use the MAG to push the ejector back up in place to make the pistol functional before releasing the slide.
IIRC the manual is available free on line and it will tell you how to take it down anyway. Just download it to the computer:)

I have the manual, my problem is that the gun won't come apart the way that the manual says it should. I have taken down different Ruger P89s before, just not this one. This one is being stubborn...

I find that if you apply pressure to the right side of the slide stop pin and then slowly shove the slide to the rear it will find it's exit notch. It isn't very far. Approximately 3/8 inch. Biggest mistake most make when tearing down the P89 is not pushing the ejector down fully. Once the slide stop is out....they occasionally are stubborn to slide off...

The ejector is down fully, and I can find the notch, but it just won't go all the way out of it. It goes part way, and just kind of springs back. It feels just like it does when I have the ejector up... Like I said, I have taken these down before, it is just that this one will not come apart. Is it possibly catching on something? Is there some other way of taking out the part that it is catching on? Can I send it to Ruger? (would rather not, but if it comes down to it....)

I've had 2 Ruger P series autos and the slide stop does not come out of the frame assuming that's what your trying to do. The procedure is lock slide back, remove magazine the depress the ejector. Depress slide lock and line the cut out for the slide lock stud push it thru and it will only go so far and stop. Push slide off frame and your good to go.

Mine works just like Highlander 5 explained above. The pin stays in the frame and the slide will come off by sliding forward. Once the ejector is down the slide will just about fall off mine if I tilt it forward a bit. The other two P series pistols that I own work in the same manner that this one does also. You may indeed have a problem with yours.

No, I am trying to get the pin out only far enough to get the slide off. I think that maybe someone (not me) could have mashed (hammer marks on the pin) it against something while they tried to take it apart as if it was a Browning HP, or maybe a 1911.

I took a dremel cutting wheel to the slide release, and cut the part off that locks the slide. I twisted the remaining piece of metal until it pointed straight down, and simply pulled it out. I ordered a replacement part, and it is coming...

Someone beat on the slide release, from the right side of the gun, with a hammer hard enough to swage the retainer spring into the slide release. This left a dent big enough to keep the retainer spring from lifting up when it is supposed to. Took the slide release out, should have it fixed in a week or so, when I get the part.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I got it fixed (I hope!). The spring that holds the slide release in was bent or had a burr on it, so when I put the new part in, it left a scratch in it. I took out the spring, polished it, bent it a little, and polished out the scratch in the slide release. Works great now!

Don't know if anybody is going to read this, but if you do, thanks for the help and suggestions.

Mac's Precision, this one has a pretty tight slide to frame fit, so it is somewhat stiff to slide off, how prevalent is this among Ruger autos? Is it just the P89? Or is it all of the other ones too?

Not that common. The older style P-Series Rugers tended towards looser fits and rattles. They all shot well, but they weren't tightly fitted.

Keep some light grease (like a white lithium grease) on the frame rails and slide grooves. The finish on the P89 is a hard anodizing which is very hard and also quite abrasive. You want some decent lube at the interface to minimize wear to the slide grooves.

Ok, will do. Thanks. All of the other Rugers that I have played with were pretty loose... Is there any possibility of having an accurate Ruger auto?

The P90 and P97 pistols were reportedly suprisingly accurate. The P-series pistols I've shot have been adequately accurate but not at all outstanding.
