I have a couple of M1s bought through the CMP, both with the later model adjustable rear sights, which IMO are not the best. For close up stuff and out to 50 yards, you have to push the rear peep all the way forward or it shoots a foot high. And with it all the way forward, you can't get a clear view through the peep.

I was thinking that a flip-up, 2-position simple rear sight may be preferable. What say the experts?

Maybe taller front sights are available?

USGI NOS Carbine front sights are tall, they are meant to be filed down to zero

I don't have a problem with mine when the rear sight is at the 100 yd mark. Are you pushing it forward of that point? If so, that could be part of your problem.

Also, Orlando is right. When the carbines were converted to adjustable sights, the new rear sight was made so that the front sight would be too tall. The idea being that the front sight could be filed down to zero the rifle. If that hadn't been done, some front sights might have been too short and you can't really make them taller.

CMP has a really good article about this in the FAQ part of their website. The fact is that many carbines never had the front sights adjusted after the flippers were replaced.

The front sight is the opposite of the rear sight. The front sight posts will differ in height from one manufacturer to another.
To raise the point of impact you lower the front post.
To lower the point of impact you raise the front post.
