many of you have seen ads in shotgun news for the su-press-on drop in auto safety sear. I have seen talk all over the place about if its legal or not but never with a clear answer, some say its legal to own a DIAS as long as you dont own the weapon it is intended for, that however is not the case.
Here is a direct copy and paste of the email i received from the ATF
The AR15 drop in auto sear is a part designed and intended for use in
converting a semiautomatic firearm into a machinegun. The AR15 drop in
auto sear is classified as a machinegun and can only be imported for or
by law enforcement or licensed/registered/SOT dealers, manufacturers and
importers for demonstration to law enforcement.
You cannot import and register a machinegun. Possession of an
unregistered machinegun under Federal law, penalties are severe for this
type of Federal Firearms laws violation. That is why the ad is unclear.
