I got some old Universal from a friend. It gives me very nice small groups in my S&W .357s; 5.0 grains under a 158 LSWC is pleasant and surgically accurate.

My Universal won't last forever. Hodgdon and everyone else is out of stock.

Any recommendations for a similar/substitute powder?

Thanks.

So universal is a single base powder and the only equivalent would be something like n340. Tons of other fun good loads around, but that's the only realistic match.

Unique is almost 1-for-1 (weight) substitute for Universal
(in fact many consider Universal to be 'spheroidal' Unique)

... (ahem) when you can find either. :cuss:

.
I haven't loaded universal yet, but the data leads me to believe it's .5-1 grain faster than unique. Would it be a good idea to use Lyman unique data for universal... I'm not but it's a big difference.

I ran a Quickload table set to give constant velocity at the predicted velocity for the load listed in the OP. I sorted by charge weight, and included all powders giving the same velocity with a similar charge weight.

Code:

I believe Universal was first sourced from Canada, but in recent years has been made in Australia. The stuff from Australia has a dull pink color cast. I don't recall any changes to the loading data when the origin changed.

Powders from Australia seem to be in short supply and elevated in price at the moment. In addition to W231, you might consider W244 and Sport Pistol.

I’m perhaps not reading this quite right, but I see Unique, WSF, and AA5 on par. WST is a pretty fast shotgun powder and I use a lot of it in .40 and .45. WSF is slower than WST, and closer to my Universal load workups. Here’s another chart for comparison:
https://hodgdon.com/wp-content/uploads/2023-burn-rate-chart.pdf

Universal has a lot of appeal since it has so many published loads, one of the reason I stockpiled a bit.

Unique is almost 1-for-1 (weight) substitute for Universal

... (ahem) when you can find either. :cuss:

.
Unique is universal; but Universal is not Unique. :D
They are close but Universal is not as utilitarian as Unique. It’s something about the stabilization. Unique works well in a lot of rifle rounds where Universal has pressure spikes. But in handguns? As long as you are not loading to magnum pressure they are virtually interchangeable. I also like No.7 in a lot of Unique substitutions but they are not even close for 1:1.

Yes, this was why I switched to the better feeding Universal.

WST is a good bit faster than Unique, but very good in .38 Spl.

Universal is a bit faster than Unique, and less forgiving at the top end.

If you were close, I could fix you up with some Universal.

Sorry, typo. Meant ‘5’

WST is much faster burning than Universal (More around Red Dot/Promo/Bullseye). You probably meant WSF. ;)

Universal ... gives me very nice small groups in my S&W .357s; 5.0 grains under a 158 LSWC is pleasant and surgically accurate.

Any recommendations for a similar/substitute powder?
During past several component shortages, I came up with following grouping of powders to find comparable substitutes when preferred powders weren't in stock.

FYI, here's THR group effort on listing of same/comparable powders - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...ble-powders-during-component-shortage.890865/

- Alliant Universal and Vectan Ba9
- Alliant Unique and Hodgdon Universal
- Alliant Unique and Alliant BE-86
But if Unique/BE-86/Ba9 are not available, powders that have similar burn rate could be considered like WSF - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...-and-discussions.778197/page-10#post-10966508
