SUPER Magnum!

I can see it being regionally popular due to laws, like the .357 maximum, but I can't imagine it will become universally popular.

Its a waste of time for me!
I feel that making a 22 caliber rimfire capable of 2700-3000 fps would be more interesting.

the best thing would be for the manfacturers to figure out a way to modernise the standard 22lr and or 22mag. make the rifles already in the field more consistantly accurate. Use a standard bullet design in place ofthe traditional heeled bullets.

The .22 Mag doesn't use a heeled bullet. It uses a standard .224" bullet inside a bigger case.

The .22 RF can't use a standard bullet because they would not fit in a standard .22 RF chamber if the bullet were full dia inside the case.
It would produce a reverse bottleneck shape.

I used to have a .17hmr and have regretting selling it. Perhaps this will be its replacement - IF ammo is the same or only slightly more expensive than .17hmr.

Waiting for the .25 Winchester Rimfire Magnum based off the .17 WRM .... with a 50/60 gr bullet at about 2400/2500 fps... then we would have a descent Rimfire for our GA WMA hog laws....

My thoughts are that unless it is pretty close in price to .17 HMR, people will gravitate more to the reloadable .17 Hornet, which is more economical (for the handloader), more flexible and capable of higher velocities.

I am all for a new rimfire but instead of another 17 caliber I wish they would have used the 27 cal case and made a 25-27 caliber rimfire for hunting bigger stuff. I like small bore guns and would love to have a rifle in 25WCF. But a rimfire version would be fine too. I don't see me buying into the new 17 caliber round.

I've been following the development of this the 17 super mag for some time now. I ws kinda in the market for a .17 but after learning about the new caliber I decided to wait it out. So I got my name at the top of the list. Candidly. I just don't wanna work up a load for a .204. 17 hornet, etc.

They did use the .27cal case, but went for whizbang speed. Seeing how well the HMR is done, if it were my money I probably would have done the same. Perhaps if this cartridge does well we will see some larger rimfires come out.

What do you estimate the life expectancy of a barrel would be with this round?

The .17WSM is going to be a terrific p-dog round and no reloading is very appealing. I load 22 Hornet, .223, .204, and .243 for p-dogs and coyotes. The thought of having a 25 gr bullet in rimfire for about 25 cents a shot is exciting to me. If it gets up around 30 cents, my interest would fade. I currently pay 22 cents for 17 HMR.

I think that is a cool idea, steps the 17 cal rimfire up to centerfire speeds, the ultimate question though will be the cost of ammo, I am not paying 223 prices for a rimfire ammo. If it will Wal-Mart retail for $12 a box or less I am in, $15-20 count me out, I'll just reload a 17 or 22cal centerfire.

Personally, I probably won't be interested. If I need something with more punch than a .22lr, I just grab one of my .223's. However, if it turns your crank, go for it.

i will pass. i can load my 223 for less than i can buy 22 magnum ammo for. and the cost of that ammo will most likely be more expensive than the 22 mag ammo. the only thing this could do in some places is get past the rimfire part of the law for some hunts.

Na, I'll stick to my 22mag or something reloadable if I need more range.

I might be remembering it wrong but the prices look lower now than when it was first announced, which is a good thing. If you buy it by the case, currently $13.50-$15.30 per 50rd box. Which isn't too awful bad. It certainly has a place among the other two, filling the very broad gap between the .22LR and Hornet class of cartridges, much less the .223.

I guess if you really hate reloading. I can load .22 Hornet for much less than that, though (about $0.17/rd with 40 gr. Z-max bullets) and have a heavier bullet at the same velocity, still with a mild report.
