Surplus .38 Special

I purchased some of the Super-Match. It came in cardboard boxes of 50. No sealed can or battlepack. They seem to be identical to commercial Super-Match.

Depends on what your're shooting it in. In my model 14 it's more accurate than I can hold, and it's as accurate as my reloads. ( the 130 grain is very accurate also).

Yes it's accurate. I'd tested 500 rounds and ended up purchasing a lot more. It's a pretty mild load, even in comparison to other 38spl wadcutter I've shot (e.g. Blackhills). It's not too smokey or dirty either.

The M41 ball ammo is fine too, quality wise - this is a bit smokey.

I think that this is genuinely surplus factory ammo - i.e. not remanufactured, or seconds. There's a thin wax film on the cases, which I assume is a sealer.

I wish someone still made jacketed wadcutters in .38 special like CCI used to. I love the wadcutters but I really don't like shooting exposed lead.

Is it pretty accurate ammo?
I'm beyond my best iron sight years, but I was able to shoot this as well as any other .38 Special has shot out of a 4" Model 28. About 2" for 6 at 25 yds.

NSK loads a 148gr fully jacketed wadcutter in 38spl ( see DEWC TMJ under Bullseye Ammo) @ http://www.nsksales.com/

Neil discounts for brass return as well.

I've shot a variety of his ammo, including the DEWC, and have never been disappointed.

That's really good shooting Maddock!
Thank you.
The only way that I could accomplish that these days was with sandbags, an aperture on my spectacles and a very bright sunny day outdoors. The closest I can come to a machine rest. Offhand, the groups are 3 - 4 inches with the aperture (a REAL bother to use with any speed - heck, a real bother all the time) and 4 inches or more without.
I'll be mostly shooting this in a Model 28 too. Mine's a 6".
The first N frame I ever held was a 6” Highway Patrolman when I was 10 years old. I’ve had a soft spot in my heart for N frames ever since.

Yea, it may not be as pretty as a Model 27, but that's part of it's charm. Mine at least is very accurate and a trusted HD gun. It's one of those guns that hold a special place in the collection and that I'm really glad I bought.

Thanx for the tip! I got 500rnds en route as we speak of the ball ammo. With shipping, it is about .20 a round, which is about 7.5 cents a round cheaper then you get for WWB @ wallyworld.

Glad to help out.

It is a pretty good deal. I might buy another case or two next month if they still have it.

I just wish I could find some surplus 45ACP in a deal like this.

Ammo arrived, with a surprise!

A heavy cardboard box was waiting for me as I got home from work today. When I opened it up like a kid at xmas, what a surprise. I ordered 500rnds and they shipped 1,000! WOO HOO!!:what: That's right. I counted all the rounds in a box to make sure I wasn't mistaken, and although they were cheap, flimsy individual boxes of 50, stacked alternately side by side, there was 1k there.

Glad I could help out. I just ordered another couple cases myself.

Wayne02, I'm not positive that it's boxer primed, but it would almost have to be, being made by Winchester.

When I started shooting in 1980 I began with the Marlin Model 60 rifle (22LR) and 38 special wadcutters our of a S&W Model 65. Those were great rounds for a twelve year old kid who was a complete novice. Still have a soft spot for them, but I didn't know you could still buy them.

Wow, this is ironic. I placed a second order of 2000 rounds and this afternoon UPS dropped off a box with 1000 rounds in it. :(

It was labeled "2 of 2" so maybe the driver just missed the other box and will drop it off tomorrow. :uhoh:
