A friend of mine is thinking of selling his SW 586 (very good condition, looks new with very minor holster wear at the tip of the barrel). There is no internal lock and the hammer is the type that has the "pointy" thing to fire the bullet. (It's the older design hammer.)

The dealer offered his $400 for it. I have a feeling that he is being ripped off.

Comments?

The dealer has to have some room to make a profit. If he wants full retail then he should do a private (Legal) sale. The 586 is a nice gun. I carried the stainless model (686) as a duty gun and I bought a new, 4" nickel 586 when they first came out. It was the most accurate .357 revolver I have ever owned and I have own quite a few, including several Pythons and S&W Model 27s.

I would be very pleased to see $400 from a dealer for that gun. In my area, I would be lucky to see $275. A lightly used 586 around here (Northeast) will sell for about $500-550 either retail or private sale.

BTW, they are great revolvers. You should buy it. :)

As said above , $400 in my area would be a very good price from a dealer.

Same here in southwest Idaho.

"...the hammer is the type that has the "pointy" thing to fire the bullet,..."

BTW, Psyprofessor, that "pointy thing," is called a "firing pin." ;)
