I recived an E-mail from a friend that's worried about her former Bf.

She contacted me because she knows I'm a gunnie, and I'm pretty protective of her (She's cute as a button too),let me give you guys a little background on the situation.

I've known this young woman from school, she lives just a little bit down the road, from me,well her bf is a drunk and a regular drugie, and he is known to have a bad temper,She got out before things turned violent (to my knowledge at least) the guy never said anything out of the way to me,but I've kind of had this vibe from him that he only tolerated me because of the said young lady.

Well,I'm going to take her shooting, and help her pick out a handgun (Yes she is going to be getting her CCW permit A.S.A.P.) She's going to be moving back to Lexington to continue school.

I'm thinking of giving her an introduction to handgun shooting with my Model 12.

I'm afraid that I'd over load her with jargon on the first trip (But yes I'm still going to do my best, and there will be pics, posted after the first range trip)

Any outside opinions on this?

Skip trying to teach anything (except safety) the first time out and just keep it positive and relaxed. Send her home with some pepper spray and schedule a second day.

I'd make sure her interest in guns isn't simply a passing situation based on her situation with her ex-bf. I'd emphasize that if she really doesn't think of it as something she wants to consistently dedicate time, practice and money to for as long as she might own a gun, she might want to consider just getting some OC spray.

There's nothing more dangerous than a gun in the possession of someone who's really not interested in owning it...IMHO

She's really wanting a sidearm for protection and she loves shooting, she's never owned a "real" firearm before (Mostly she's only shot airguns)

But I'm thinking of helping her out with picking out a first handgun.

I'm thinking of going in half on a Taurus PT-22 for her. I'm thinking of showing her a pick of this (No I'm not sexist, but she would more than likely dig the grips)model...http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?model=PP22B&category=Pistol

just teach her about the gun , and how fun and relaxing it is to go shooting, and master the usage of the gun. Do not bring it up in context of having to defend herself in a rapid response, or to shoot her ex. Once she gets good and comfortable with it , then teach her how to use it under stress, at night , low light conditions, if she is getting out of a car, seeking cover, move and shoot , etc.
