taurus 856 grips

8E3F02F1-4354-4167-8865-A42639EE807D.jpeg They baited and switched me! The paper in the counter said “856” but the sku number is for a model 85 5 shot! HA! They thought they were pulling a fast one! Now my attn has turned to the armscor M200 that was there for 249.00. I think that could be my new carry wadcutter gun with some of the small 206 boot stocks on it. I cant seem to find a pic yet of that.

The top revolver in the photo I posted in post #3 is a 3" Model 85 with a factory ported barrel. The 85 is slightly thinner than the 856 due to it being a 5 shot versus a 6 shot. Other than the 85 being a 5 shot, I can't tell a difference when shooting a model 85 and a Model 856.

I bought a Crossbreed holster for my Model 85 and I had to adjust it just a tad for the Model 856 to fit. My Desantis leather holster fits both revolvers just fine.

All of the wood grips I have seen or used have had a steel dowel pin. I have only seen a roll pin in the current OEM rubber grips.

$229 for a new taurus 85 is a fine deal for a fine revolver.

Brownells has the rubber grips for the public defender I believe that is the same as the 856 or the 85, which the grips will fit either model and are under $30.
Check out Etsy.com they may have grips for your Taurus too.

I went with the Hogue grips on my 856.
I tested 2 other grips besides the original and Hogues.
The others changed the POI/POA relationship.
With a 148gr wad cutter loaded to 725fps (in a 6”bbl. Actually about 600fps from 2”bbl), it hits poi/poa out to 25yds. Quite accurate too!
With standard velocity 158gr, it hits just a bit higher. Expected.
But , +P 125’s hit 6” low and 3” left at 25yds. Also expected…

Yes any grips designed for the older Model 85 will fit the new Model 856. I didn't care for the factory rubber grips on my 856 and 942 so I swapped them out for Model 85 factory wood grips.

I know this is a little while back but I came home today with an 856. Those oem grips are terrible to say the least. How big are those grips? I'm gonna need something fairly large that will fit my huge, meaty paws...........

A pair of Hogue 67000 grips came in the box with my 3" 856 purchased earlier this year. I like them much better than the standard two-finger grip, and changing the grip was not challenging. I am sure there are better grips available, but I note low ratings for many of the wood grips on Amazon.

As many have said, all small framed Taurus revolvers use the same grips, so any grip for the 85 will work. As some have said, count on the roll pin being a pain in the rear to remove.

Let me say, I am a big fan of the 856. After being a Taurus fan for years, I was about to give up on them after two bad experiences, and since I can buy S&W and Colt revolvers instead, when the 856 came along and saved Taurus for me. I love my 856UL, and I'm about to buy an 856 Defender as soon as a gun I have on consignment sells (or possibly earlier if it takes much longer to sell). I'm actually replacing my 3" Colt King Cobra with the 856 Defender (in that sized gun I use .38spl, I have a 2.75" S&W 66 when I want to go with magnums, and the different trigger reset and cylinder release on a Colt vs. what S&W and Taurus use can be disasterous on a defensive handgun when you are used to the Taurus and S&W system).

I'm also one of the (rare it seems) people who like the standard Taurus 856 grips. In fact, it is one of only three rubber grips I like (1st place: the old Uncle Mike boot and combat grips, 2nd place: these Taurus grips, 3rd: Hogue). They have a place for your pinky, but with it further back than usual is closer to your actual grip than the usual pinky forward grips (make a fist and see where your fingers fall), and it conceals better than other grips with a full hand grip.

I ordered these but they're going back. Not because there's anything wrong with them, in fact they're basically perfect.

The reason is they cost $81 and change and I just discovered I need new grips for my model 82 police trade in, I can't afford both.

So unless someone knows how to get infused perfume out of rubber grips I'm gonna have to replace em. No, Febreeze is worse and living with them is not medically viable, I'm allergic to perfumes and scents.

What does acetone do to rubber? Benzene (carcinogenic perhaps, but purged after using)? Certainly there has to be an antidote to stinky grips, and/or a box at your LGS full of take-off grips that will work.

Did some research and pretty much everyone says vinegar is the key. A very long soak followed by a neutral soap wash then alcohol. I already have them soaking.

Of course I found some ($70 +) wood grips for the 82 I love..........
