I am not one of those that says that Taurus is as good as Smith or Colt
But I will say that they are no worse

The trigger on my 686 just plain sucks next to my 445
And at least Taurus doesn't try to pass off plastic trigger parts on their 1911s

Perhaps the price point pressure from the likes of Taurus has caused a dip in sales of some of the former better manufacturers, causing them to cut corners in order to show more profit on the now fewer guns that they still try to sell at full price
