I made the mistake of buying a Taurus 709 slim 9mm for my wife. When we got it the slide was sooo difficult to pull back. My wife couldnt operate the pistol! I immediately wrote in to customer service. I was told to put at least 500 rounds through it. I put more than 1000! Same issue.
4 months later I called them. They asked me to send the gun in at my cost, pay a $35.00 bench charge plus another $30 fee and then wanted to charge me for any parts it needed!

I went nuts! End of story,,, I wont buy another Taurus firearm ever! I also told them this. It mad no matter to the agent though. Yes I know I shouldnt have bought a second rate firearm to begin with but it looked perfect for my wife. Beware guys! Ill buy a new spring or just leave the gun in my safe for years to come.

Confirming though...NO MORE TAURUS GUNS FOR ME! Absolute junk!

This is why you don't buy a gun for your wife. You take her to the gun shop with you and see which one she likes and actually can use.

But first teach her proper technique (the link above is great) and she should be happy.

Next time have your wife handle (and if possible shoot) the gun before you buy it, you'll both be much happier in the long run.

From what you're saying I'm not even sure if anything was actually wrong with the gun, it was just a compact 9mm with a strong spring.

Considering the fact that this is a very common issue with many women (and some men) and is the nature of breast so to speak with many if not most semi-autos, I fail to see how it is Taurus's fault you pick the wrong gun.

My wife and I were in our local gun shop and for some reason she fell in love with a little Taurus .22 auto. So without doing any research she bought it and we took it home.

At home I read a few reviews, seems to go about 50-50. No human can pull the slide back, but the barrel tips up to load the first round so you don't really need to. We took it to the camp site this weekend and the thing performed flawlessly. I realized while we were there that I'd never cleaned or oiled it. I dumped a full magazine as fast as I could pull the trigger and no jams. The sights are a little whacked, but it's not meant to be a target gun.

^^^^^ I agree, that being said, Taurus pistols are less than stellar.

I had a 709. Was flawless through over 2k rounds without a stoppage.
Shield and XDs both recalled. 709 hasn't had one.
It's not the guns fault. Maybe she should try a revolver or learn the push pull technique that many women use to rack slides.

I had terrible luck with a pt709 slim as well. However over my time in owning various firearms I've came to realize that you shouldn't paint a gun company as a whole for one bad model. I have two "economy" pistols. The pf9 and the cm9. They both run flawless. On the other hand my more expensive xds9mm is on its way back to SA due to the recall. Just because a fire arm is from a reputable company doesn't mean its above being flawed.

Two of my good friends and shooting buddies have the 709, and neither have had the first malfunction or complaint. I borrowed one of them for my wife to try, and she didn't care for the stiff trigger pull. Not the gun's fault at all. No reason to trash Taurus over this.

Part of this is true but it has nothing to do with what gun you bought her. Your mistake was buying your wife a gun, period. You don't pick out the one for her, you take her to the gun store with you and let her pick out her own. That's what we did when my wife wanted a gun on her nightstand. I offered my input on the ones she asked about but the ultimate decision was hers and I didn't try and sway her with what I would buy for me. She settled on a 4" .38 Special because it felt good in her hands and I pointed out that the 4" steel revolver would minimize recoil, which she liked too.

I'm not a Taurus fanboy but blaming them because of your mistake is just silly. Kind of like buying a Ford F-350 then complaining because its big.

^ Ha.
And when I load ammo with a crappy Lee press into my crappy Taurus gun and my wife shoots it, it really sucks.

There. Taurus, gun for the wife and Lee all in one. :)

^ ha you must load 38's for a revolver. :neener:

I kid...I kid :p

I did have a friend of mine blame a Taurus for him killing his wife.

Can't say I disagree with you there. Buying a little bitty gun for your wife - no, scratch that - buying any gun for your wife without her input is almost always a recipe for disaster.

Not the gun's fault. It's her fault. And yours for giving her something that doesn't suit her.

Small little 9mm pistols tend to have really stiff recoil springs, making them hard for people with small hands and a lack of upper body strength to rack the slide thereof.

I might as well say Ruger sucks because my tiny little wife can't reach the trigger on my P89DC.

The same tiny little wife who much prefers my Glock 19 to my Taurus PT111.

I didn't see where the OP stated the gun ever malfunctioned, simply that the wife couldn't rack the slide. My wife can't rack the slides on my TRP, my Les Baer or my Colt Commanders ... Junk, I tell you! Absolute junk!

Dude, you seriously need to do a better job choosing your friends. :uhoh:

Yep. You should sell that junk heap and get you a quality firearm.

I bought a brand new Browning High Power in 1974/75. I discovered that the trigger was impossible to pull without undue effort(in my mind). I was VERY disappointed in my new pistol(she was a beaut). I traded it away and I determined at that time NEVER to own another and I haven't(a High power that is). Today my EDC-OC is a Browning BDM in 9mm and is by far my favorite pistol, bar none!

I agree wholeheartedly, it's a mistake to buy your wife a gun. It's also a mistake to buy her vacuum cleaners, routers, cookware or toilet brushes. Stick to diamonds, rubies and pearls.
