Teen Protects Mother by Shooting Abusive Boyfriend

You may be protective over your children, but it goes both ways. In fact, police say a teenager went as far as to shoot a man who was beating his mother.

The man accused of abusing his girlfriend was shot at least three times.
Some say it doesn't come as a surprise that a 17-year-old boy would pull the trigger on a man standing over his mother, still lying beaten on the ground. A broken window screen still lies outside this apartment -- a leftover from a violent argument.__

Janet Valdez lives in the next building._ She heard the gunshots._"It was just really scary. I wouldn't -- I didn't even want to come out of the house at all. At first I thought they were just firecrackers.â€

Police say 36-year-old Carlos Davadi hit his girlfriend several times in the face knocking her to the ground._ That's when they say her 17-year-old son came out of his room and shot Davidi several times.___

It's clear Helen Boyd is close to her daughter, so she can understand a child being protective over their parents._ But for Helen -- as a neighbor -- this story hit close to home in more ways than one._ She grew up in an abusive household herself where she watched her mother get beaten continuously.

"She was bleeding._ And to me it was like from her eye because of the way she had it cuffed._And I remember looking up at her and saying, 'Mama, why are you still here with him?'"
Police say Davadi ripped the screen off the window so he could climb into the apartment._ The mangled metal may represent the struggle, but for neighbors it's a reminder of what pushed a teenager to protect his mother._

"I don't know him that well but I know a kid. I know a teenager. And the first thing you think about is the love for you parents. Everything else -- rationality -- goes out the window,†said Boyd.

“I know I would've done whatever it took to protect my mother,†added Valdez.
Davadi is at Wishard Hospital. He's charged with domestic battery, a misdemeanor.

The 17-year-old boy is back with his mother. Investigators say the evidence points to self-defense, but prosecutors could see it differently.

Looks like a clean shoot to me!

Rough one.

On the one hand, the loon might STILL not get the "go AWAY" message even from this, if he physically recovers enough to still be a threat.

But on the bright side, the kid doesn't have a life on his mind for the rest of his life. Which could be a good thing too.

Where did this happen? Locale could make a big difference as to possible prosecution. Here in AL, the boy would likely get a pass, and a "do better next time."

Why do people think it's irrational to shoot a person that breaks into your house and starts beating your mother? He ripped the screen out of the window to gain entry, he wasn't let in the door. He was physically assaulting his mother.

The shooting sounds justified and prudent given the situation. The guy who was shot should be spending a long time in jail after he gets out of the hospital.

I'm 57 now and this same thing happened to a friend of mine. when we were in high school. He shot the perp and the bastard did die. Police filed for 2nd degree murder but it was dismissed. The friend got into drugs and never was the same. Lost track of him, he never comes to the reunions and nobody from our class has ever heard anything about him. Sad.

Is it possible that they could say that the boy was obligated to first warn the perp that he had a gun before shooting? In my CCW class they told us to yell, "Stop! I have a gun!" when you draw on someone.

That boy shouldn't be prosecuted, he should be awarded a medal. He (A) could have saved his mother's life and (B) put a woman beating psycho in his place. (apparently that place is in the hospital)

If this does go to trial, I hope the jury is made up of mostly women.
Well, I'm one man the defense would really, really want on the jury. No way I would convict given teh information at hand. Hell, I'd clap him on the shoulder, say good job, and give him some advise for better shot placement if it happens again.

No, in your CCW class they told you to tell the police that you shouted "Stop! I have a gun!" before you draw on somebody.

If you have the time, cerrtainly do so.

If you don't have the time to do so, well, you still said it anyway. The guy with two COM and one to the head won't refute you.

Personally, I think "his place" is a particle-board box, buried in an unmarked, shallow grave, upside down and backwards. I refuse to abide people who abuse others, especially when the other can't/won't fight back.

Just as in the case of Mr. Honeycutt, the "Pizza Guy", I sincerely hope that we all rally around this situation. In fact, this type of thing, too me at least, is one of the best reasons for advocating the right to self defense - it does not only concern you personally but equally allows you to protect your family and loved ones.

I doubt there is a person amongst us that would not willingly put themselves in danger to protect their child, I also believe that rings true for protecting our parents.

In a situation such as this that clearly indicates there was danger to a boys mother I would insist that the "authorities" see it for what it was, bad guy is shown the error of his ways...

Gearbox: Alway shoot to stop. It just so happens that those areas of the body that provide quick stops often results in death.

I think we should all chip in some money every month then we could send people that defend themselves a medal quick thinking under fire.

My best guess is this 17-year-old "child" (as the Million Morons would categorize him) handled it by the book. Three shots were probably exactly what it took to stop the vicious assault on his mother, and he probably had more to spare, but stopped when the miscreant was neutralized.

That's the most poorly written article I've ever read.

Did the reporter even graduate elementary school?

Investigators say the evidence points to self-defense, but prosecutors could see it differently.

They could also say that the moon is made of cheese! Did the prosecutor's office give any indication that they might file charges, or is this just some dramatic speculation on the part of the reporter?

I'd like to know what happens, so you Hoosiers keep the rest of us posted.

Tumultuous entry into a dwelling, with the intent to commit a crime therein, and violence having ensued upon the resident of the dwelling = free pass for resident to use all means necessary and reasonable to stop the attack(er).

Let the kid walk. Take the perp's assets, sell them, garnish his pay for the rest of his miserable life after prison, and pay for mom's medical bills and therapy for the kid. And shooting lessons.

Good riddance.

Just curious, but wouldn't breaking into the apartment up the offense just a little? There's got to be more they can charge this guy with than a simple misdemeanor
