San Antonio is a pretty nice big city. There is a great deal of history assocated with the city and they have a wonderful zoo. I find the missons very interesting. I won't list all the other sights and so forth already mentioned.
For the oudoors oriented person, the best thing about the area is the Hill Country. The area northwest of I-35 between San Antonio and Austin is very interesting and nice. You drive around Texas and you see many rivers or streams that are entenched, always muddy, and moving slowly. Streams in the Hill Country will open your eyes to a whole new aspect of Texas. Get yourself a Delorme Atlas of Texas.
The Gulf and the beaches are accessible for weekend jaunts. Big Bend is a long drive, but it is a longer drive for most everyone. The country south of San Antonio will grow on you. It is really quite pretty in the spring.
