Tell me about the Smith and Wesson Model 64

I don't own any revolvers and a local shop has a used S&W model 64 in stainless with a 3 inch barrel. It looks to be in very good condition, mechanically sound but with a fairly worn finish....probably holster wear since this was a police or security trade in.

I only want this as a fun/bump in the night/ maybe my wife will like it revolver....not looking for anything fancy.

Dealer says it will handle +p 38's.....true?

He's only asking $190....seems like a good price, especially in Maryland.


Your thoughts please?
 
Buy it! The 64 is an excellent gun, basically the standard Model 10 with a heavy barrel. It also has a round butt in the 3" version (if it has a square butt, someone changed the barrel). If you don't want it, please PM me with the gunshop's name - I'll buy it in a heartbeat for one of my disabled shooters!
 
Your enthusiasm has sold me!

Actually I was pretty sold anyway, just needed to hear it from somebody with some S&W background.

I think he may have a few of these. If he has any left after I buy mine (in about two weeks) I'll pm you his number.

There were a few other Smith 38's there....different model number, parkerized....I can't remember the model right now....maybe Norton can chime in here.

But they were only going for $210.
 
You will not be sorry, I can tell you that!

The Model 64 is my favorite .38 revolver. I have three 64's, and I am thinking about getting another.

I carry my Detroit police 64 all the time now.
 
If he has any more let us know please. I would love to pick up a 64 in 3 inch configuration. Im looking at getting a model 10 3 inch this month, but would love the stainless over the blued gun. Great find though, let us know it shoots.
 
Spot, the 64 is the stainless M10.

There is no better carry/combat revolver than a 3" K-frame. I love my S&W 65LS. I've desperately wanted another 3" K-frame to go with it (one to customize a bit for carry when out of state) but people tend to hold on to their 3 inchers and when you do see them I usually see them for a premium.

If the shop has more 3" K-frames at that price or anywhere near it please PM me with the shop name. At $200 for the revolver itself I should be able to have the exact gun I want for around $350 after mods (there really needs to be a drool smilie).
 
'Holster wear' on a SS? I suppose you mean shiney spots... the remainder of the revolver could be shined with Flitz, etc to match. I did that on a scratch and ding special 3" 65 I bought about a year ago - a PR police trade-in from Centerfire Systems for $200. I actually had to take it to my 6" buffer and some rouge for the deeper gouges. I added a Hogue wood monogrip. Folks at the range who saw it when it arrived wouldn't believe it was the same revolver. As is usual in police trade-ins, the innards were clean and had no wear - perfect bore, too. I oiled it - broke it in with some dry-fire - and my wife has the '65LS'-ish revolver she wanted. I would grab a 3" 64 in a heartbeat at that price... that is all we need here - that 65 will only see 158gr +P LHPSWC's here, anyway!

Need to look at it again I guess. It seemed like "dull" spots I guess....or.....like a chrome bumper that's just kinda' lost its luster in certain places. Also has a number engraved on it, though it's pretty faint. I'll take your advice on the Flitz.

I'm not terribly worried about the finish.....just want a good, safe and affordable revolver, but if it can look good too......bonus for me.

If I didn't need my cash to go out of town this week (heading to Nashville) I'd scoop it up Monday. I suppose I should go put a deposit on it though....sounds like it could sell fast!
 
The Model 64 NY-1 was the gun I qualified with when I drove Armored Car.
I had the audacity to install a Hogue nylon grip on it...nice firearm.

Then one of the 'chicks' used it to qualify with and basically took it over, 'cuz it belonged to the company. :rolleyes:
So, I ended up with a Model 10, which I promptly put MY grips on. The gal that swiped my other gun somehow didn't like her '64' as well after that! :evil:
 
Hey Spot-

I bought my 64 (4" police trade in) for (I think) $320 at White Marsh Arms in November 2002. It had no wear and they told me it was a "trainer" revolver.

$190 sounds like a good deal!

Maybe the prices are starting to loosen up back home?

I visited last weekend but didn't have time to gun shop, but I wondered if the Hap Baker range has the pistol section open yet......
 
So, Spot, did you snatch it up yet?

If not, do so ASAP-great price for a 3" M64.

My 4" was born in 1987. It was a correctional faciliity's gun. I think the worst thing it was ever subjected to was getting rained on during prisoner transports. I would guess it was only fired once or twice a year in qualifications. Lock up and timing is perfect.

I gave 225.00 for it, and thought that was a good buy for a barely-used service revolver. 190.00 for a 3" version? Now that's a deal.

As much as I like the new technoplastic guns in 9mm and .40, there's something reassuring about taking a S&W K-frame .38 to the range.

Can't remember what the deal was on the Parkerized one....but it was pretty cool looking. Maybe I need to snatch that puppy up for and "extra" :evil:
 
Though I prefer the blue of a model 10 , I have really enjoyed my 3" RB HB model 64.

Really though...you folks REALLY do not want a antiquated design, holding only 6 rds, one that might get scratched, or requires taking care of a finish...

...I hear they have some really nice semi-auto Police Trade ins now-a-days... :evil:

Sounds like a very good deal (assuming it's not all worn out). As for the cosmetics, you can use flitz and/or mothers mag polish and it will come out beautiful. You can also use a scotchbright pad to uniformly dull the gun as well. It's one of the advantages of SS.

There used to be a site up somewhere that was a step by step guide to evaluating a used revolver (and semi-auto as well)......anyone recall the address?

I seem to remember that it was very logical and methodical and would be of great help in this sort of purchase.
