...jees.....

What a bad day.

Maybe teargas would´ve been a good idea....
..... running into an evil black rifle isn´t funny
even with SWAT gear.

condolences.

A tragedy - it was a routine traffic stop. But as a retired state police captain with some 30 years on the job, let me say that no traffic stop is routine. You have no way of knowing is it's someone's dear old grandmother or some one who's just committed murder or held up a bank. A sad day for law enforcement and everyone else. Prayers to the killed and injured officers and their families.

All I've seen in the press reports so far is "assault rifle" and "assault weapon" but no specifics beyond that. Interested to see if they will even bother to report beyond that.

^ Unless it turns out to be a .22 bolt action or something this is going to spark a whole round of liberal media-promoted "let's ban assault weapons" talk.

We've already closed one thread on this and deleted it en masse because posters couldn't mind their manners. Four humans were just killed and their families irrevocably shattered. The fact that a gun was used is less important a fact than that one.

Just as we chastize The Brady Bunch and other assorted Forces Of Evil for dancing in the blood of the victims at the expense of the RKBA community - so should we refrain from that behavior ourselves.

Let's stay on The High Road.

Please.

The story I read stated the killer had "an extensive criminal record" and was wanted on a "No Bail" warrant.
The blood of these police officers is on the hands of a court system that put him on the street.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A police officer was battling for his life and three more were dead after a parolee with an "extensive criminal history" opened fire at a routine traffic stop and hours later gunned down members of a SWAT team searching for him.

The gunman was also killed Saturday, capping a day of violence that the Oakland Police Department said was the worst in its history. Never before had three police officers died in the line of duty on the same day.

"It's in these moments that words are extraordinarily inadequate," said Mayor Ron Dellums at a somber news conference Saturday night.

The mayhem began that afternoon, when two motorcycle patrol officers stopped a 1995 Buick sedan in east Oakland, Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said. The driver opened fire, killing Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, and gravely wounding Officer John Hege, 41.

The gunman then fled on foot, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies. Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland closed to traffic.

About two hours later, officers got an anonymous tip that the gunman was inside a nearby apartment building.

A SWAT team had entered an apartment to clear and search it when the gunman shot them with an assault rifle, police said.

Sgt. Ervin Romans, 43, and Sgt. Daniel Sakai, 35, were killed and a third officer was grazed by a bullet, police said.

SWAT team members returned fire, killing 26-year-old Lovelle Mixon of Oakland, Acting Oakland police Chief Howard Jordan said.

Officer Hege suffered brain damage and may not survive, his father, Dr. John S. Hege, said late Saturday.

"It is a stunning thing to face," he said.

Grieving officers at the police station hugged and consoled each other. People left four bouquets of white roses under a granite memorial wall inside the building lobby that lists 47 officers killed in the line of duty. The wall shows the last officer killed in Oakland was in January of 1999.

Police said Mixon wielded two different weapons. One gun was used at the first scene and an assault rifle was used at the apartment building where he was hiding.

Jordan said Mixon had an "extensive criminal history" and was wanted on a no-bail warrant."(Mixon) was on parole and he had a warrant out for his arrest for violating that parole. And he was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon," said Oakland police Deputy Chief Jeffery Israel.

Police said they did not know exactly why the officers initially stopped the suspect, but said it apparently was a routine traffic stop.

People lingered at the scene of the first shooting. About 20 bystanders taunted police.

Tension between police and the community has risen steadily since the fatal shooting of unarmed 22-year-old Oscar Grant by a transit police officer at an Oakland train station on Jan. 1.

That former Bay Area Rapid Transit officer, Johannes Mehserle, has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Violent protests erupted on the streets of Oakland in the weeks after Grant's death, further inflaming tensions.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger planned to fly to Oakland on Sunday from Washington, D.C., to meet with police and Mayor Dellums, the govenor's office said.

Tragic, and shows with gun bans only the police and criminals have guns. My sorrows for the slain officers and pray for the one still in the hospital.

This is a terrible tragedy.

The perp who murdered those policemen had a long criminal record and should have been in prison. This incident is an indictment of the CA catch and release "justice" system.

CA just went to releasing inmates who have less than 20 months to serve. Also, CA corrections had thier salaries slashed to minimum wage, we are getting them coming to us now, no wonder thier system is in disarray.
Prayers to the families of the fallen, you won't be forgotten.

I feel bad for the officers involved and for their families. But let's face it, they know the risk when they accept the badge.

You can bet your last dollar, this WILL be brought up in Congress the next time they discuss another AWB, only instead of "do it for the children", it will be "do it for our police officers."

I wasn't there, I am only reading news reports, you shouldn't Monday morning quarterback etc. etc. but;
The operations team in charge of the apartment entry knew this guy was armed with a handgun at least. They knew he was extremely desperate having shot two officers already. They should have planned that the killer had other firearms available in the apartment. Was an immediate entry team the best way to proceed? There was a 100% guarantee that this would lead to a shoot-out. What happened to the CS gas?

California already has it's own laws that supercede the Feds about any "assault" anything. Laws in place were broken. Felon with a firearm, felon with an AR type weapon, murder, attempted murder.. gee, ya think one more law is going to help? Um.. nope.

No kevlar helmets and ceramic plate body armor?
Probably regular line officers showing up with what they had in the vehicle to help secure the perimeter.

Thoughts and prayers for the families of the victims, and for the wounded officer. And imprecations for whatever judge put the violent career criminal back on the street.

The Old Fuff is not well informed about such matters, but I thought that before an officer stopped someone they would radio the dispatcher the car's license number and ask for a check. This is not a perfect solution, but it seems it might reduce the risk.

Maybe if this isn't something that's being done it should be.

In the line of duty, R.I.P.
The type of weapon utilized doesn't change the fact that there are a lot of evil people in the world and killing is just another part of their day.

Cops better realize it isn't going to get any better no matter what laws are placed on the books.
The more people walking the planet translates to a porportionate increase in insane, mean, evil types walking alongside the rest of us.

We are all deeply saddened and shocked by this atrocity.

Love and condolences to the families and colleagues of the victims.

Is it just me, or does this tactical garb look reminiscent of the Army ACU?

That says something pretty amazing.

They probably should have used tear gas. They might have though that it would give him warning, and he would shoot more people. They also probably wanted him stopped immediately. If he killed 4 cops, imagine how many regular people he would have killed.

I feel that if they didn't provide the SWAT team with those, they were stupid.

Perhaps the idiots would prefer the police let the maniac go on a shooting rampage.

fwiw:
Read an eyewitness report that as the SWAT team was assembled outside the apartment building, one of them was shot before they even attempted to enter it.
