Thanks to the 'old codgers'.

If it wasn't for this site's age challenged, I'd probably have blown my hand off by now. :scrutiny:

Well this maybe doesn't have anything do to with the current crop of codgers, but one of my favorite memories back when I was just able to drive back in the '50's was going to an old gun shop in the larger town near us and listening to the then "Old Codgers" tell their shooting/hunting/deer camp/fishing stories and more than a bunch of stretching the truth. The old shop had the old pot belly stove, fridge filled with beer and pop, elephant foot stools and old worn out comfortable easy chairs. Learned an afful lot about shooting and reloading there. If you wanted anything that the owner didn't have or more than likely couldn't find, he was always going to Chicage on Thursday and pick it up at Klines.

Man those were the days. I also remember I always got bawled out because when I got home I smelled like pipe and cigar smoke. Sure would like to go back and spend one more evening there.

If the 59 in your user name is indicative of your birth year - approaching codgerhood only, not yet there. ('Cause I'm older than that, and I refuse to be a codger.)
Don't I wish it was my birth year? ha ha Subtract another 20 and you'll be close.

And if you have been putting off that special hunt, or taking up a hobby such as loading? Keep in mind that no one is guaranteed tomorrow. If getting old teaches you nothing else, it's does teach you to "Go Do It NOW!!!!!"

Did Alabama have schools back then?

Yep!

Some of the best in the country. (and perhaps some of the worst, too)

Many of my friends went on to some lesser know schools such as Auburn University, University of Alabama, Georgia Tech, MIT, Harvard, Yale and such. Made something of themselves.
Can't say too much about myself however. Spent too much of my time hunting, fishing, and shooting (and reloading). Had something to do with going to Auburn University for my degree in Zoology/Wildlife Management.
Now, retired and between corporate aviation and flight instruction, I still do a little bit of hunting, fishing and shooting....... All over the country !

YES, By all means. When I was in my 20's I turned down doing alot of things because their was always tomorrow, well tomorrow never came. Very shortly I realized to take advantage of the opportunities when they came up as long as they were legal. In looking back, man am I fortuntate to have lived and done some of the things I did, even with all the health issues I've had over the years. I have been very Blessed.

Once again, if you get the chance DO IT, and ENJOY.

After reading your post, I was thinking about my youth and gun shops. I fondly recall several characters who told "stories".

I remember sitting spell bound as one mountain of a gentleman would tell of his days in China as a mechanic with the Flying Tigers. I was thinking of how much I would love to go back and listen to those stories again. But then I cogitated on my naval and other parts of my anatomy and realized that I was really not yearning to hear their stories, I was yearning for my youth.:D
