The 642 club

Ditto on all that Nem said. With mine, I found out really quickly that I had better control the higher up on the grip my hold was. That was after I finally got some rounds in the middle of an anatomy man target. Yeah, it hurt the webbing between the thumb and the forefinger more, but I could more easily get off a second shot. Learning to stage that trigger also took a little practice. After about 2 years the muscle memory development for both left and right hands I know just how far to pull before the sear breaks.

Oh, I forgot. Check that the cylinder is empty or has snap caps loaded. Dry fire,....dry fire,....dry fire, etc. And went you get done with that drill, dry fire. Shoot the heads off of people on TV as you watch. Drive your wife nuts dry firing, but never point the weapon at her while she's complaining. Or any other time.

m9x18-Welcome to club 642. Happy to have you on board as our newest member. The way it's been going lately you won't be the new guy for very long. I'm sure you will be happy here and with you new 642 as well. As for me I moved from site to site until I found THR and then the 642 club and I haven't been to another site since. And this thread just continues to grow and improve.....let us know what you think about your little handful.

that sounds like sound advice, thanks. I have been dry firing with A-Zooms a lot! the tv works well, but you can bet I make quite sure the thing has snap caps before pointing it at my beloved 42" Sony! I was actually thinking that maybe I acted too hastily in buying the 642...(even thought I haven't fired it yet) ...I came across a 640-1 pre-lock today at a pawn shop while on my lunch brake (it was actually priced at only $60 more then what I paid for my 642) and after feeling the weight I was tempted.... but I guess my K22 is really my plinking gun and the 642 will be self-defense, I just hope I somewhat enjoy shooting it! I'm sure I won't mind the trade off if/when I decide to get my CCW and the 642 just seems to have more aesthetic appeal for some reason. well hopefully I'll get to take it out this weekend and let you know how things go. thanks!

I know it sounds like we don't enjoy shooting the little mule, as quite a few have called the 642, but it's really not too bad.
The more you shoot the more fun you have, expecially when you start getting more acquainted with how to control the little thing. My biggest problem when I first started was learning how to stage the trigger quickly and not pull all the way through. Once you have trigger staging mastered, you'll really be surprised at how accurate you can be. I hope you have many enjoyable times at the range, and never have to use your weapon for self defense. Be safe.

Joined up today!

After much thought I joined the 642 club today. Grew up shooting dad's airweight and I am still woundering what I have done? But I bought it knowing I will carry it at all times. I don't think I would have done that with a all steel that I wanted.
Now i need a week side holster, I am right handed and some advice on ammo that won't make you play center field after the first shoot but does the job.

m9x18 - Told you so!

sevenbark - Welcome, Glad to have you here with us. When you say weak side holster are you talking about OWB, IWB or ?, if you read here awhile you will find that mostly we are a pocket carry bunch and most pocket holsters can be used either side. Tell us what you have in mind and we will see what we can come up with.

As far as ammo selection goes we are currently in a selection process to find the most effective rounds for the 44/642 so we shall see.

For practice ammo, I like to just try different kinds and see what happens. As for the topic of recoil, I just don't have a problem with any round I have tried. I can tell the difference between normal pressure and +P but to me they are all controllable and it's just not that much of a big deal. I do get a little sore if I shoot 100+ rounds at a time but mostly I will only put 25 or 30 downrange two or three time a week just to stay on top of it.

Well, I just read the first tasteless post in 111 pages of this thread.
(I'll leave it up to you to guess which one.)

{ Added days later by edit: said post was removed by mods. (thanks). }

I've had a change of opinion about carry options. I've written in the past that I'm not interesting in IWB for the 642. But after a crude experiment today with my OWB posing momentarily as an IWB, I think I want to reconsider that.

Any of you carry the mule in an IWB? If so, what do you recommend that I explore?

I feel guilty, I cheated on my 642. I carried my G19 today, just looking at other options. It felt odd I am used to carrying my 642 in my pocket for a little over a year now, but the 642 will be a bug or one of my stashed house guns. Its always good for a quick run to the store, just toss it in the pocket and go.

Well, I just read the first tasteless post in 111 pages of this thread.
(I'll leave it up to you to guess which one.)

I was going to just let this go But I find I cannot. I have weighed my options (a PM to the poster, A PM to FiVe, or to a moderator) in the end I have decided to just post here.

I do not understand the motivation for this post and I do not believe that this type of material contributes anything positive to this thread and in fact it distracts from it. I have said before that I feel like I am a member of a family here and I feel some responsibility in the direction that we as a group take in the future of the 642 club.

While I fully support the right of free speech and expression I believe that in this case an error in judgment has occurred and I would ask the poster to remove said post from this thread. No harm, No foul, please do not take this personally as it is not intended in that manner and I do not wish to impede anyone's participation in this forum.

I am surprised that I feel so strongly about this as I am not offended nor angry at all, I guess it was just unexpected. If you think I am out of line here then please disregard this post.

Holster for 642?

Jt1 I will pocket carry some but need a good way to draw setting. With that in mind and to cover all seasons IWB is the way I want to go. Left ankle sounds good to but know nothing about that setup. I seen a pic that appeared to have fmjswc loaded in the gun, I need to look back and see who that was?

+1 Jt1 and Nem. Not sure why you felt compelled to post that Darth, but please refrain in the future from dirtying up a good thread.

Not much to report on the j-frame front at the moment. I carried my MP340 in my Kramer pocket holster while playing tennis last night. Worked out great, surprisingly.

Monday's range session with the MP340 went well. 50 rounds of Remington UMC, 10 rounds of GDHP +P SB. I shot 10 at a paper target, then put all 50 in a pie plate sized section of a silhouette at 21 feet as fast as I could reacquire the sight. I'm pleased with my level of competency with the j-frames now.

I have developed a bit of a callous in the web of my shooting hand from shooting the 442/MP340. I guess they do damage your hand, after all :neener:

Darth

Please make it go away. Not appropriate to the thread and has no redeeming or pertinent quality whatsoever. Try to stay on topic and attempt not to derail as much as possible. It is a quasi single minded thread intentionally but broad enough to address virtually all snub issues, including, holsters, ammuntion, range reports etc.
Do stay around and be a productive, functional member of the "club".

Through the magic of after the fact editing...1BlindRef, we don't want Darth to go away, he is a welcome contributor.
His posting might be appropriated for an "off topic" thread somewhere else is all. Threads like this are gems and uncommon and I know we would all like to stay on course.

This is my opinion only and I have no clout here.

WoW!

Welcome to all those new posters whom I missed - The 642 Club is certainly the hub of where it's at for owners of this fine gun.

I've skimmed through the last several pages and spotted a few new users posts regarding trigger pull. The best advice I got, (on here of course), was to dry fire it a lot. I can't recommend that enough. My 642 is just under a month old and the trigger pull is getting better and better every day. This has been due to a lot of dry firing and a lot of shooting. As of last night, I have 520-rounds through my 642CT and the trigger pull is really no longer an issue for my shooting as much as getting used to the draw. However, my groups have tightened up considerably and I'm comfortable enough with this gun to carry it full-time now.

I may be a bit conservative, but my grandfather taught me to train with any weapon enough to be proficient with it before I use it regularly and that's what I did. I get leery when I hear about folks buying a gun out of the case and then carrying it immediately. But that's just me. I now have the 642CT on my person constantly. The LaserGrips really are a thing of beauty. I have my tuned in as far as I need to be. Folks with no experience using CT's should not set their expectations to make surgical hits with them. This is my second set and once I get them dialed in for center mass, I leave them be.

Lastly, a note about "darthvaders" post. I understand you're a new poster darth and anywhere else I may have had a chuckle at your pic. I've been on the Internet a long, long time and am a member of many forums. I have come to find The 642 Club as a bastion to escape from the darkness that's out there. I'm no prude, (trust me), but when it comes to membership here, I have my limits as to where I want to go with humor and what I want to see on a thread that's been built around a dedication to a firearm and the common ground that goes with it. I'm sounding a bit prudish again, but I think The 642 Club is on a level well above what you posted. I would appreciate it if you could edit your post to not include that picture. I'm not imposing censorship, (I don't have nor want that authority). I'm just asking that you reconsider, make appropriate changes and please continue posting - it's nice to have you here and you'll learn much, so please come back and start over....

LopLop if you have a chance post a couple pics of the MP 340 in and out of the Kramer would you please?

Guess your tennis game isn't that aggressive or that is one heck of a snubby combo ;) carry plan. Not too much to worry about in terms of printing when you might be walking about with a pocketful of tennis balls. :D

Thanks in advance.

Hey gang - I just ran into this online. May be old news to some, but I thought I'd post it for those interested. Looks to be a competition attempt for the Crimson Trace. Compete's for sure on price and I like that the laser sits up a bit higher....Anyway, check it out HERE:

I don't like them. I think thy look funny. I prefer the Crimson trace and I'm willing to pay a little more for them. If anything I hope this causes CT to lower their price. I'd love to get them for less than the $229 I paid las time for my 642. I have a 442 I'll be able to DROS on May 10 and have on May 20th.

We are all in total agreement about the subject post. I really appreciate the remarks you each posted. We all know the 642 Club is a special place with posts that reflect quality individuals.

Now, darth, we are not into censorship nor are we prudes, but I respectfully request you remove the attachment to your post. Everyone here can make a valuable contribution to the thread because we are each having our own, unique experience with the 642 (or other snubbies). Each person's perspective becomes part of the corporate knowledge from which we all glean information. We want you here, but your post--well, it's like chocolate syrup on fried chicken--it just doesn't fit. Please do not take offense over this. We expect a little more here, and I'm asking you to step up to the challenge.

Thanks for your help, and we are looking forward to many more posts from you that are more "on target".

Most sincerely,
fiVe

Very interesting. I might like this design better (haven't decided yet). I am curious to see how/if CT responds. If anyone here goes with LaserMax, your online review is an absolute requirement.

Thanks for posting the link, MassMark.

Doesn't KFC sell that for dessert? :neener:

Seriously -
I think everyone is playing right into Darths hand. If nobody pays any attention to his post, he will probably go away.

Crimson Trace Redux

Crimson Trace Website:

http://www.crimsontrace.com/

What a great segway for a CT Redux. I just got the ole 642 back from S&W where they "replaced sear"..remember the "clacker"?

I had just purchased the CTs and have been anxious to install them.

Today I finally had an opportunity. Let's review. For J Frames. Three models are available.
LG 105 harder rubber, less "grippy". No on/off switch. Less expensive.
LG 305 See Photo and larger of two with on/off.
LG 405 See Photo and smaller of the two with on/off.

I paid $229 (shipping incl) from Discovery Optics in WA. Great service. With the best price at the time I researched.

If you purchase a 642/442/340 with grips factory installed they are the LG 305s with the S&W Logo (to paraphrase one member, "cool factor" and I agree.

There are a number of members who have CTs. I think the most memorable comment was from Holydoc, who after a trip to the range said the laser pointing/guidance system was the ultimate in "unfair advantage". ;) I'll take all the help I can get.

Sure! Have you seen my photo of my 442 in the Kramer? The 340 looks like a veritable twin once it's in the holster:

I'm no Federer, for sure. I am fairly young, though, an played with enough vigor to work up a bit of a sweat, even though it was only low 70s. Would I compete packing my MP340? Nope. But on a public court, playing friends & family, no problemo. I was actually quite surprised how well it worked.

I do need to post some MP340 photos, although it may be awhile as I'll be away from a computer for a few weeks. If you don't see them in the next few days, look for somewhere around mid May.

DAdams,

Congrats on getting your gun back. I have the LG 405's and can thank this thread for the tip on getting them from Discovery Optics as well. I'll be getting a second pair for my 442 as soon as I DROS it.

I prefer the 405's to the other on the J frame line.
