The 642 club

The posting of 13 pages of S&W snubbies has offended my checkbook and therefore I have reported you by PM to gunwife who has been appointed by FiVe to deal with such matters!

Is she licensed to kill.... :D

Our 1st 1000 posts came in 17 months and 15 days. The 2nd 1000 posts happened in 5 Months and 16 days. Our next 1000? Only time will tell.......

Number 3000 came in just 53 days. This thread continues to amaze & humble me. We are now, without
a doubt, the best 642 reference on the web (IMHO), and it is the members who make the difference.
Simply, yet profoundly, put: We are a group of quality, friendly folk. We are eager to help, and if we can't
provide the answer first-hand, we know where to go to get it. I am very proud of the knowledge base we are
building here, and I'm also proud of the new business for Smith and Wesson (and any snubbie maker
for that matter)
. And I also want to thank Robert Mika for what he has done for those of us who
pocket carry. I know there are many good holsters out there, but I continue to be so impressed
with my Mika round cut and the guy who made it.

Like Nem, the pace & work load on my job has increased, thus my time here has decreased.
In the past, I've tried to offer a personal welcome to at least most of the new members.
Between my job and our increased growth rate, I find that I have missed some lately, but to
all newcomers a warm and heartfelt welcome. There is so much good information here! DAdams,
thanks for the link to the 13 pages of snubbie photos. How can anyone not like all those pics?!

Our second anniversary will be on May 13. I have been carrying a 642 for two years and have not
regretted it one time. For me, it is the perfect CCW. Two years ago, I could've never guessed we would be
where we are today. This place is such a blessing to me and I appreciate every one here.
Let the growth continue.

Peace, Blessings, Prosperity, and Safe Shooting to you all,
fiVe

Wow, you know, I didn't even catch that we'd passed 3000 until just now.

In the past, I've tried to offer a personal welcome to at least most of the new members. Between my job and our increased growth rate, I find that I have missed some lately ...
In the past, I've checked in here several times a day. Right now, I'm lucky to make it once a day.

But the really cool thing is, others are picking up the welcoming committee roles: Jad, DA, JT, M'Mark ...

We're a community, and it shows. We've never met, but function as a community. That's just too cool.

What an interesting thing, this Internet.

Happy 3000, everyone. And, yes, thanks to fiVe for starting this whole experiment.

It is because of the quality of the membership of this club that we continue to grow and I am honored to be associated with it. Let us continue to maintain these standards as we pursue our 642 interests and our relationships by always taking The High Road.

Well said JT, I'm getting all weepy, and a proud lump in my throat, wait I think the hair is standing up on the back of my neck. :D One thing for sure I never have any loose change around any more since taking up handgunning. Between the boat and LGS and ranges I now appreciate a women and her shoe fetish. :scrutiny:

This thread has taken on a life of its own and as with any organization with intelligent individuals involved as long as it serves a useful purpose it will perpetuate.

Thanks to all who have provided input and contribute and continue to raise the bar. This is history in the making. Well kind of. ;)

I would travel far to attend a "642 Club Shoot". You are some of the most top-shelf people I've had the privilege of running into on this often dark medium...

Deal of the Century...... While looking for some short barrel ammo for the
642CT I currently own. As I was leaving a Gun Shop a older gentleman walked in with his wife and asked the shop owner if he was interested in purchasing this ( It was a 642 in the box with no CT) The shop owner told him he wasn't interested in it. The couple left as did I. While in the parking lot I asked the guy what he needed to get out of the pistol. He said at this point $100.00 would take it. I told him I could do that. He said SOLD. A quick trip to the Sheriff's Office sealed the deal.

I have also enjoyed this forum. It contains endless information. I ordered my Mika holster almost three weeks ago. And I can't wait until it arrives.

I don't know how you can sleep at night. :D You held that old couple up right in front of a gun store. :neener: Way to capitalize on the aged. ;)

I ordered a Mika Holster today for my 642, finally got around to it.

Thanks for starting this five. I've had my 642 a little longer than 2 years, but my wife, family and friends often grow weary of my incessant talk about firearms in general, and I know I can always come here everyday or several times a day and be with folks who think like me. I have been informed, and at times, entertained several times a day since my first post in January. But I must admit that I hovered around this thread long before my first post and enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks again.

I'd surely like to steal a 642, 442 or 340 like that since my wife will take my 642 when her CCW permit comes back from Raleigh. Excellent deal!

I'll add 2 cents worth . . .

In general these "club" threads I feel embody the maximum usage of a gun forum to inform folks considering buying or who own a specific firearm. I have seen several "not another %$#* club thread" posts occasionally at THR.

If this is not the best use of an online gun forum, what is? Heck there's probably more posts scattered around THR about "what caliber for grizzly bear" - the majority of which are from folks who have about as much a chance of ever seeing a grizzly bear as having an asteroid fall on their head.

If there's a better place to thoughtfully research owning and carrying snub revolvers on the internet, I would like to see it. Where else can someone ask questions and actually get answers from folks like "OldFuff" or Jim March or Stephen Camp all of which probably know more about S&W revolvers than Mssrs. Smith or Wesson ever thought possible . . . or, gunsmiths like Matt Alameda, holster makers like Robert Mika, ammo manufacturers like Tim Sundles, etc. etc. etc. . . .

Sure 3,000 posts is a lot to read . . . the search engine is a shortcut. But for folks like me, I read every post and get value, tips and knowledge from even the newbies telling us about their first experiences. Congrats on a job well done to fiVe and the core posters that made this thread what it is.

Okay, I'm done . . . any more, I'll have to charge extra.

Regards,
ART

Welcome to all the new members since my last post (even though I haven't posted in a couple of weeks, I've been keeping up with my reading).

MassMark mentioned a "642 Club Shoot." This made me think that it would be interesting to see the geographic dispersion of our membership. I just added a location to my profile. It would be interesting if those of you who don't already show your location added it. Just a thought.

We could use a google earth layer file to plot us all by location :) Any interest? I'd be willing to maintain it if you guys care :)

If the wife doesn't like shooting the 642 I picked up you might see if put up for sale. Provided we transfer it through licensed dealers is it something that can be listed on this forum?

Headless-The geographical distribution/scattergram would be interesting.
Has anyone updated the "member list" lately? Head count/piece count at this memorable 3000 post point?

ARTiger-Asteroid hit to the head indeed. :D That's a hoot. You are right about the resources that pop in and out and it's interesting that there are some awesome "lurkers" keeping we High Road snubbie owners/operators both newbie and expert on the High Road.

It would be nice to have a "642 Club" Off Topic, just to keep the pertinent meaty stuff in a cohesive format. Not every post is going to be Nema870, fiVe, and LopLop (speaking of LopLop where's that boy hiding) coming up with high level pearls of wisdom.

When I first began reading the entire thread a few months back around 1500 (whew) I stripped (copied) much of the good resource information into a Word Document and grouped it in topical content as I read along. I knew I didn't want to have to go back to try to find something that I didn't know was important then as I advanced on the learning curve. That was a prophetic move.

The 642 Club High Road to Post 6000 may take twice as long but it will still be a gathering point a year from now. I raise my glass to all. ;)

S&W642CT here is the link for the Buy, Sell, Trade site on THR.
You would probably get quantitatively a higher viewing there.
For the discriminating 642 niche customer, and we know who we are  I see no reason why you couldn't put a link to your solicitation at the buy/sell site in a post here. Perhaps we need to conjur up Sir fiVe who knows all to opine on this matter.

If you don't have one perhaps a 686 or 586 may be in your future partially funded with the ill gotten gains  you realized in the parking lot on the back of the elderly. :neener:

ar154life, welcome as a prospective 642 clubber. How do they hold up? Well I think you will find, unless using it as a hammer. You will likely find that like most S&W revolvers you will get 1000s of rounds of shooting pleasure.
Mine was brand new two months ago and had to make a trip back to S&W in under 100 rounds to have the sear replaced. That said I think that was an anamoly and an exception. I don't recall anyone else having major issues or any issues for that matter. The beauty of S&W is the lifetime warranty and they pay the shipping both ways.
Their customer service is excellent and the turnaround time was about a week. Communications throughout the event was timely, Fredette answered all my sophmoric questions while I was tracking the repair.
Usually you can rent the 642/442s at a range to see if it is a hg for you.
For personal carry I don't think they can be beat. Unless you go to something lighter like a MP 340 or, Ti-Sc. Same format, and can handle .357 round if so inclined.
Let us know if you have some specific questions.

ar154life

Mine is over 2 years old. I shoot it at least once per week. It has over 2000 live rounds through it and over 10,000 dry-fire pulls and is still going strong. When I asked my dealer about a CCW weapon, the 642 is what he reccomended without blinking his eyes. That was in the fall of 2004. I bought it in January 2005. My wife is going to take it away from me when her CCW permit is sent from Raleigh, and I may buy another one to replace it. It's a hardy little weapon and easy to carry concealed for most people.

ar154life - I think you will find they hold up just fine. Think of them as the AR/AK of the pistol world. While they are primarly close-in SD guns we have seen lately they are capable of reaching out quite a way if necessary. Feel free to stay around till you decide. We are ready when you are.

S&W642CT&G19 - I always hear about these deals but I never get one.

I like the idea of a location plot and someday maybe a 642 club face to face. It could be very interesting.......
