Batman & Robin

The 642 hanging out with his new big brother, the 3" 65.

I'm calling them Batman & Robin: the dynamic duo.

Still working on photography.
This little digital is just not cutting it.
Gonna have to get out the 35 mm film camera.

Nem - Wow! That's quite a dynamic duo you have there! I hear ya on the digital - instant gratification and good results can be had, but to me there's still nothing like 35mm. Try natural lighting for your next round of digital pics - the results are better IMHO. You can also do "poor man's studio lighting" with a couple of work lamps, (cheap clamp-on type) and some GE Reveal bulbs. In any case, sweet pair of Smith and Wessons you have going there. I've been handling quite a few revolvers at the local shop-o-fun and have become hooked on a 4" 629.... Not ready to buy any time soon, but man do I like the feel of that gun...

Nem,
Nice to see the duo. Fnally we see the 65 you got to replace the 686. Nice picture.

MassMark,
I to have been eyeing a 629 but in a 5" I likethe full lug barrel and I don't want to confues it with my 4" 686. I have an order in with Ala Dan who I will buy teh 629 classic from as soon as he gets it in. You might want to contact him his prices were very good. perhaps we can help others out ans put together a S&W group buy.
I also just purchased a Marlin 1894SS to partner with the 629. now all I need is to find a nice stainless .357 lever for the 686 & 642.

Desantis v. Mika

ArgosTCS :I have no experience with the Mika but I am very pleased with my Desantis Nemisis. I ordered it from MidwayUSA along with a bunch of other things. I am also very pleased with MidwayUSA's fast turn around time on orders so far.

Bat Cave Pair

The wait is over and Batman finally arrives. Nice pair they make Nem that 642 and 65.

Have you done any polishing? Because it looks good. I was thinking something like 10 miles of hard road the way you described it.

Another Monogrip devotee I see. Aren't those sweet.

dust_101 - We will be awaiting your range report. As for flashlights, one of our members here, clipse, has reviewed quite a few. Goto THR search and enter "flashlight review" and you will find his and many more.

Mika and Nemisis - I have both, recommend both.

Nem - Very nice indeed, When you get that new lever you will have quite the practical set-up. Let us know how it works. As for the stainless finish, my 629 has the same and when I get around to it I'm sending it to get a matte hardcrome finish. The effect is somewhat similar to the 642 and it is reportedly one of the most durable finishes available. Looks like this one:

Thanks for all the complements, guys. I'm feeling very good about the dynamic duo. Will get to the range this mid week to shoot Batman. Will offer a range report.

DA, yes, love the Hogues. Near perfect for me (except the lack of fit for this set that I'm discussing over in the K-frame club).

No polishing yet at all other than a buff with a rag. Looking for suggestions for how to polish out a few very light scratches, and one "deeper one" on the right side. (Polishing suggestions are not appropriate for this club, of course. Robin would not enjoy being polished ... :uhoh: ).

Excellent suggestion re outdoor lighting for the dig cam. Will try that today.

JT, that "matte hardcrome finish" is exactly what I have in mind for Batman, but I'm not sure where to look. Can you offer a source - maybe a URL - of someone that you would send off a gun to do it. I googled that term, but didn't find much but descriptions of guns for sale that already have it.

Can any smith do that - or have it done - or are there specialty shops that you recommend?

Thanks everyone.

Nem

Nem - Most of the custom shops either do the hard chrome or can have it sent out. I am currently looking for a local (Seattle or Portland areas) shop that does good work. The going price seems to be around $200.00 or so. If you're not in a big hurry just wait awhile till I get mine done and you can check it out. In the meantime hear are a few links:

Hi Nem & jt. Sorry to butt in here, but may I suggest a good matte bead blast for your shiny revolvers if you're looking to asthetically match them to your 642s? The hardchroming should make it easier to wipe fouling off, but the beadblasting is much more cost effective. Leadaway cloths do a great job taking fouling off stainless as well. I'll take pics off my matte bead blasted 1911 if you guys would like to see what that example looks like.

Hi Nem & jt. Sorry to butt in here,
Uga, AFAIC, you can butt in as often as you'd like.

But, you're not really "butting in".
This is a totally open thread and discussion.

Good to see you here. ;)

{For 642 members who don't know Uga, he's the host of the K-frame club;
you know, those SW revolvers that are the next logical step up from the J's.}

Yes.

That's what I'm hoping to do, along with reducing the moonlight reflection to the extent possible.

I'm listening.

I'll take pics off my matte bead blasted 1911 if you guys would like to see what that example looks like.
Yes, por favor.

Hang out, Uga. J's and K's need to hang out together more often.

;)

I hereby appoint ugaarguy the official K-Frame ambassador to the 642 Club.

Wow.

How many threads on the I-web have official ambassadors, poll takers, statisticians, armorers, archive specialists ...
{I forget what other roles you have you assigned in here, fiVe ... }

We're just a little virtual city.

Someday, maybe we'll incorporate: "The 642 Club, Inc".

We could sell t'shirts, bumper stickers, coffee mugs ... maybe even open a gun shop.
(With permission from THR admins, of course ... )

Of course, we need our own cadre of superhero's, too.

ugaarguy - Thx for the post, you are of course welcome here and we would love to see your pic's.

Heres a mod. 640 stainless that has been bead blasted. You can get various finish effects and they can match a 642 almost perfectly. It is a good finish and will run from $75.00 to $125.00 and most local 'smiths can do it or get it done. Not as durable as hardchrome but a most satisfactory finish over stainless. It is important to find someone who knows what they are doing. This example shows the S&W logo has been over blasted. A good craftsman can do a much better job. (doesn't really matter on this one as they have ruined it with the barrel porting anyway).

Went out over the weekend and cranked off about 200 rounds of various ammo at my local range over the weekend. Evidently, not all +P ammo was created alike. Remington has got two 125 grain personal defense options that I sampled along with a couple different target loads. Those Remington loads seemed much higher than the Winchester +P defense load I was previously loading with.

Having only 5 shots per cylinder sure makes for a slower more methodical rate of practice. I really like this gun and seem to shoot pretty well with it. I was knocking over six inch plates every 3 out of 5 shots from the 15 yard line with virtually all ammo that I tried.

My blister has officially poped on my trigger finger.

Well, I just got back from a range trip with my little pocket protector. 50 rounds of 158 grain, and 25 rounds of 125 grain +p's and I found something out. While in the pocket (only done this at home, no chl yet) you can forget this gun is there...when you pull the trigger, however, it let's you know it's there.

The recoil wasn't (imo) bad, but it was noticeable. I didn't really feel any difference between the +p and non+p, but maybe I should have mixed a cylinder just to see.

Now, I need to look into getting a reloading station set up...I can forsee a lot of shooting in my future!

MSWildfowler - Thx for that report. Yes, there is quite a spread between felt recoil from various loads. I have fired some standard pressure one that feel hotter than some +P's. Sounds like you did some good shooting.

phreeq - I hope you don't mean you had an AD in your pocket?

mikeyinokc - Your Mika will get even better with use. It took mine about 30 days of 24/7 carry to really settle in. It will flatten out and conform to the gun and your pocket.

jt...no, I haven't had an AD in my life, I was just referring to the fact that while at the range, it was not exactly a *****cat.

After 75 rounds, I had to call it quits. I probably could have gone longer, but I didn't want to push into the realm of it not being fun anymore, so I packed it in and went home....and started cleaning....only one gun went to the range with me, but I needed to clean five of them. Of course, as soon as I got everything together to start cleaning, I noticed that I was just about out of patches :banghead: so I had to run back out to stock up.

phreeq - Glad to hear it. Guess it was just the way I read it. I know what you mean about forgetting that 642 in your pocket. Makes you smile when you put your hand in there and feel the grip. I had an AD once...ok...twice...well, if you count the tank main gun HE round....
