just a guy that has hiked, backpacked, hunted and fished all over the southern half of Colorado for the past 35+ years.
I have hiked and hunted all over central and southern Illinois as well as central Ohio for years. We don't have bears (an occasional stray from WVA or PA maybe) but I do know one thing about bears - THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BEAR PROOF COOLER! :)

Bear-proof cooler, Churchill, Alaska. (Not available at Walmart.)

442

Well, I lost out in my bid to obtain the unfired 442 no-dash BUT......I just found a NIB 442-1 in a local cubbyhole :). So, as soon as I get it my sweet shooting 442-2 will go to a show. I tried to talk my wife into it but she is not really into guns much (but a great shot) and doesn't want to change from her S&W 64NY1 DAO.

Since I'll be moving at the end of August I will also have access to a modern range or two instead of the woods down the road. I'll probably get more shooting time in. I also think I'll try the Buffalo Bore load even tho' it's more expensive.

Nice find on the 442-1, Congrats!
I've been somewhat leary about the lock on my 642-2. I have about 700-800 rounds through it without a hitch, and I'm confident in that she would let me down if I ever need her .... BUT if a nice 642 or 442 w/o a lock comes around, I'll definitly jump on it. I don't know if I'd sell my 642-2 - I kinda get attached to my guns :)

Thanks to All!

Due to the recent situation in CT, My wife wanted to feell safe at home. So off to do research and I found this forum with a wealth of great info and knowlegable people. I just bought her a 642 ($372 @ Academy Sports, Houston) and just ordered the lg305 grips online. We will go to the range this weekend for practice. Thanks for the great advice!

Hogue grip on 642 makes difficult speedloading

the grip seems to get in the way of the speed loading..i know i read somewhere about inletting the grip(something like that) and was wondering what was used to do that..what it looked like after..
anyone have this same issue in the past with a s&w 642?

thanks for your reply

nd1979: Sounds good. You didn't give any indication of J frame shooting experience so I'll make the assumption that you and/or your wife might be new to shooting the 642. I would suggest using some 148gr wadcutters or 110gr standard pressure jhp's to start with. That LG-305 is a three-finger grip so that will help a lot but I wouldn't start out using the laser as they can sometimes frustrate new shooters. Good luck and us know how it goes.

nd1979 - Welcome to both you and Mrs. nd1979. We are happy to have you here. As Photoman says, if you are not use to the j-frame, a 642 might seem a little harsh on recoil at first, but just take your time and have fun with it, no need to rush your pratice, and soon enought you will get use to it. Make sure you are using standard pressure ammo and not +P for a while, it might make a difference with Mrs. nd1979. The LG-305's will make quite a difference in felt recoil. We will be waiting for your report.

filthydee - Welcome to the 642 Club. Somewhere in here is a picture of some grips that were cut down for a speedloader. I will post it as soon as I can recover it again.

...what ammo to use in my 642 when in bear country....

Call Tim at buff bore, Maybe he can load up some 642 Bear Bore. :D

Good Advice...!

You are correct...This is our first j-frame. I'll start off with the standard pressure ammo. Thanks again!

Welcome to THR and the 642 club!
The best advice I can give is you is to dry fire the be-jesus out of your new 642 (I learned that on this thread). The trigger will smooth out nicely. It took about 400-500 pulls for mine.

filthydee - Here's the only photo I have seen of grips modified for speedloading. They are not the same as yours but the idea is the same. If you use a sharp tool and go real slow you should be able to get good looking results. Let up know how it turns out.

I cleaned my 642 a couple of days ago.

It was coated with residue from 100 rnds.

No disassembly.
No field stripping.

I just unloaded it,
brushed the barrel and cylinder,
then drug a few patches
through all the bores.

Reloaded.
Good to go.

No springs;
no disassembly.

10 minutes,
& I was done.

.cheese.- Glad you picked the 642. You know it's the right thing to do. Chocolate milk, 642, apple pie...
