I'd put up $5 for five. It's gotta be worth $5 for an honest gun review on such a great "always" gun that I probably wouldn't have bought were it not for this thread.
 idea shecki

Im new,so I wouldnt know who's considered the "trusted member"...so you guys will have to figure that one out. Paypal is an option for funding. Hell, at the least, Fiver can get a cool holster.

Words fail me here (there's a lump in my throat, too). I could never say no to such a generous offer, but I hope all of you realize this was the absolute fartherest thought from my mind.

The thread should decide this--without any further encouragement, comment, input, etc. from me. Nematocyst-870 or jad0110 can be trusted as "keeper of the till", but I have not contacted them, so this would definitely require their approval (Nema/jad: hope I didn't just speak out of turn.)

If this goes thru, you can all say you know the most appreciative member on THR. If not, that will be fine too. I am just so touched that the offer was made.

Everybody stay safe.

Peace,
fiVe

fiVe,

Although I'm honored to be named by you
as worthy of trust for keeping the till,
I must pass on that duty, my friend.

(It has nothing to do with my respect for you & this thread - that's there-
and everything to do with my lack of time to devote to the project
while trying to keep my business afloat...)

I'm totally down with contributing 2X,
and think it should happen, and will happily contribute,
but must pass the responsibility of collection onto others.

I, too, totally trust our friend Jad,
and I suspect others in here as well.

Respect,

Nem (with 642 on my right side)

Somehow, I've decided I just "have to have" a 638/642. Prices seem to be all over the place locally.

What is a reasonable price for a 642 with CT in your area?

Thanks!

Paddling man

I paid $393. total out the door without the CT. I'm in eastern PA. I took the CT off of my 640 and put it on my 642 :D You won't be sorry you bought one!

jad0110:

HighVelocity,

Those are some nice ahrends. Same question as above for your's too ... how do they feel compared to the boot grips?

Thanks! They don't feel as comfortable but they'll fit in a small pocket and don't get stuck like some rubber grips. They do force you to grip the gun real high, which is a good thing.

What CT grips are coming on the 642 now - is it the latest 405 model with the cushioned grip?

LG305 from my shop.

Looks just like the one I've got pictured. I like the size of the 205 / 405 better, I think. Time will tell. Right now, I'm still stoked! I've had it in the RH pocket and/or cargo pocket all day and it is comfortable.

Other CCWs for me include a KelTec P11, a Glock 30 (awesome, but a brick,) and a lil .25 auto. This 642 is going to fit in great!

fiVe,

You didn't speak out of turn. In fact, like Nem, I feel honored that I've been nominated to be "keeper of the till"! I wonder how many people will trust me, but after all, it is only $5.

I think I will accept, however, a few things first.

1) I and one or two other folks should probably check the THR forum rules to make certain this isn't a problem. I doubt it would be, but it would still be prudent. I may PM one of the mods just to make certain too.

2) If everything is clear, I'd probably open a temporary PO Box to be used just for this purpose and this purpose alone. I'd make a post here in The 642 Club as well as creating a seperate thread in the Revolver forum too.

3) I'd request that everyone who sends their donation include their THR username at a minimum (email address optional) so that I could confirm receipt of donations.

4) It would probably be a good idea to decide on a cuttoff date for making donations; as much as I admire fiVe for establishing this fine club, I don't want to be checking that PO Box 5 years from now ;) .

This could be a really great way to thank fiVe for opening so many eyes to the greatness of the little 38 snubbie. I know, many had already decided on a 642/442 or other snub, but I for one was on the fence until reading this thread (I had been considering a Bersa 380 or Beretta Tomcat). I am delighted with my 642! Even if S&W had been able to give him a gun as a "commission", this could be potentially even better: fiVe will get to pick exactly what he wants, new or used, and from any manufacturer.

Let me know what you all think ... if this happens, I'd like it to be right.

Forgive me if I don't post back immediately. I became a new dad in November, so sometimes "doodie" calls :p :D !

From what I've seen (I'm on page 22 so far... April of '06) you guys seem to be recommending Speer Gold Dot +p 135, right? It seems like the Corbon Powrball produces almost double the muzzle energy... of course, that may all change with a short barrel. All of my other revolvers are .357 and the only .38 ammo I own currently are the target loads. That changes tomorrow. ;)

The Gold Dot still seem to be the ammo of choice for these little guns?

Thanks!

p_m,

I don't know if anyone's ever done a real count in here (hey, could you guys collect that into your spread sheet?), but those speer 135's seem to be the local cyber favorite.

i got'em in mine. i like their performance at the range.

and good for you that you're actually schlogging through all the pages. it's definitely worth the effort. so much info in there. it's like a little 642 wikipedia: rnds, holsters, shooting tips, comparable snubbies, recipes for chocolate cookies ... oh, no, wait, that was a different thread...

Okay, I'll start populating the database:

rounds: Speer 135gr. Gold Dots
holster: Pocket Holster from Andrews Custom Leather
shooting tips: practice!
grips: Pachmayr compac pros -- had CT LG205s, but found them too uncomfortable to practice.
comparable snubbies: None, though I'm keeping my eye out for a reasonably priced old Model 38 bodyguard.

Can't help with the cookies...

Rounds: Speer Gold Dot 135
Holster: Nemesis
Grips: Stock rubber booties
Shooting Tips: from Jerry Miculek: wrap your left thumb around the back of your right thumb, almost to the wrist. Otherwise: shoot a lot, dryfire more.
Comparable Snubbies: not a snubbie, but a j frame 3" model 60 that I sometimes carry in my pocket.

Thanks to Dr.BoomBoom (thanks!), I went looking for Jerry Miculek's pages.

Found this one. Wow. What a resource. :what:

Check out "Revolver Grip". Near the bottom, he explains grip for J-frames.
(And just looky what he's shooting. :D )

rounds: Speer 135gr. Gold Dots
holster: Kramer or Galco pocket, Fist belt slide
grips: Ahrends cocobolo boot grips
shooting tips: Practice as much as you can. WWB 125gr +P JHP have about the same POI as the GDHP but are much cheaper and easy to find.
I also recommend the Wilson Combat trigger spring kit. After much trial and error, the 15lb trigger rebound spring works the best with the 18lb hammer spring imho.

I went to the range with a coworker last week and tried his 642 with CTC grips - I liked it a lot :), so much so I plan to get one in the next few days...

From the website the CTC grips appear longer than the standard 642 grips, but my preference would be the base model 642 w/out laser grips. Will any of the other J Frame grips fit the 642? Will a K Frame grip fit a J Frame (i.e. the Pachmayr Compac Professional)?

Thanks in advance for your help & suggestions!

Any J-frame Round Butt grips will fit it. K-frame grips will not.

You can get the Pach's for a J-frame if you wish. They will be a bit larger than the grips shown on the 642 in your post.

It looks like the grips on the 642 picture are what are called "boot grips"

You can get them in rubber or nylon from Hogues', Uncle Mikes, Pachmayr's or you can get the same configuration in fancy wood from Ahrends, Spegels, and numerous others.

Have fun.

I've got a pair of the S&W (ct) lazer grips and they are a little longer but it doesn't make any difference when I carry it in a uncle mike's #3 in my pocket.
I also have Mod. 60 with Pach's and I really love the feel of them. They have the little hook that you little finger lays in and it feels good. the only thing that would make me like them more is if they had the lazer in them.
