rounds: Remington 125 gr HP or Federal 130 gr HP (I would like to try some 158 gr LSWCHP)
holster: Robert Mika round-cut pocket holster
grips: Stock, Uncle Mike's boot grips
shooting tips: Excessive dryfiring really helps smooth the trigger.

Well, as I'm already to page 11 in my 642 count, I'll pass for now on the other stuff ;) . But this is an excellent way to catalog all our favorite stuff. All we have to do now is refer future members to page 60!

rounds: Practice - usually Remington 158 grn RNL or WWB Winchester 130 grain and coming soon, my very own home brewed loads including 148 wadcutters :D . Self defense - Speer Gold Dot 135 grn +P
holster: Robert Mika round-cut pocket holster and Uncle Mikes Size #3 IWB clip holster
grips: Stock, Uncle Mike's boot grips
shooting tips: Most important ...Remember the 4 rules!!! For me, my DA K-22 has been a great training gun, allowing cheap practice and very little recoil, allowing me to work on my trigger control, which is where I agree with Jerry Miculek as being the most difficult thing to master. Also, stay relaxed. It's going to sting a little whether you tense up and flinch or not!
Comparable Snubbies: None for a while. Maybe a cool Ruger Service Six 2.75" one day for IWB!
Chocolate cookies: I've got a nice easy fudge recipee, does that count? :p

Foolproof Chocolate Fudge
3 cups (18 ounces semi-sweet Chocolate Chips) - miniature chips melt faster.
1 (14 ounce) can Eagle Brand Condensed milk
Dash of salt
11/2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
1/2 to 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Over low heat in a medium sized sauce pan, melt chips with condensed milk and salt. Stir to keep from burning. Remove from heat; add vanilla and nuts. Spread evenly in pan covered in wax paper. Chill 2 hrs or until firm. Turn onto cutting board, peel off waxed paper and cut into squares. Store covered in Fridge... yummy

Sorry, couldn't help myself  . To keep the recipee firearm related, be sure to cleanse your hands of gun cleaner/lube/burnt powder before heating. Though I'll admit to loving the aroma of Hoppes #9, I'm not too crazy about eating it  .

BTW, for those of you looking for a cool video, pick up a copy of Jerry Miculek's Ultimate Advance Revolver. It is loaded with tons of great info, I think I've watched it about a dozen times. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=289660.

As for our thank you gift for fiVe, I checked the THR rules last night and did not see anything that would specifically forbid it. I will contact a mod tonight to make sure. My only remaining concern is that of twisted copy cats: though our purpose is that of expressing genuine gratitude to our buddy fiVe, I worry about others thinking they can make a thread "requesting a dollar from everyone on the forum". So again, I'll check on that in the interest of not wanting to open a can of worms for THR.

BTW, good suggestion on Paypal sheckigreen. I'll have to look into that if all is clear with the mods.

BTW fiVe, I tried the "FBI Load" (158 +P LSWCHP) and found the recoil to be the stiffest I've encountered in the 642, but still not real bad. I got good hits with the FBI Load, but the muzzle flash is very noticeable compared to the Speers. Nice big bright orange flash, kinda like a gasoline soaked fire cracker going off. Therefore, I keep my 686 loaded with the LSWCHP and my 642 loaded with the gold dots.

Capital, Capital thinking here, jad. The gesture is too kind (yes, I hope it succeeds), but the board and the thread come first.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info, jad.

So glad to see all the new posters! Keep up the good work, everybody.

I finally took my little five shot buddy to the range for the first time today. It wasn't too bad and I wasn't too bad either. It is definately different than what I am used to.

I must be stupid for buying a new gun in January when I live in Wisconsin. I've had it for four days now without shooting it and I am going nuts.

Yet another 642

I recently puchased what I thought would be my new back-up weapon. I got a descent price of $299 on a 642, but came to realize I may reconsider my everyday carry. I usually have my S&W 10-4 2 3/4" in a Galco on my hip. After wearing this one all day, no more back pain. Tuff choice, not really.

What gun to get?

I'm looking for a good lightweight ccw. I've decided on the S&W but I'm not sure if I should get the 442, 642, or 637. Any recommendations? In a perfect world I'd like a 442 with the exposed hammer but I can't find one. does anyone know if they were ever made?

I currently carry a Glock 19, have a 686 4" and a Kimber Raptor II.

doc2rn,

Welcome to the Club!

g5reality,

Looking for an external hammer blued finish? I don't think S&W makes them currently, but here are a couple of used options (not my guns, found the pics online):

S&W Model 37 (airweight):

model37big.jpg

S&W Model 36 (steel frame):

36a.jpg

The 36 is probably the more common of the two. I just saw a nice example at a gun show for $250.

Those are some sweet carry pieces you have there, but mighty large! You are gonna love the little snubby, trust me! When you get it, come by and post pics and we'll initiate you into The 642 Club properly!

Initiation fee is a box of Speer Gold Dots for all! ;) :D

S&W 37-2.Bobbed hammer,DAO,no lock,forged hammer and trigger,hammer mounted firing pin.

How much is it worth?

What do you guys think a used pre-lock 642 with CT-405 laser grips would realistically be worth? I haven't seen it, but it was described to me as having a small area where the cylinder release latch has scratched the frame. Sounds pretty minor to me, but you guys know more than I.

TIA!

Check the sticky re: how to evaluate the condition of a revolver at the top of this forum. If it is in good shape I would offer about 20% less than what used 642s in your are are selling for in the gun shops with maybe a small premium for prelock.

LOL! Ain't never seen suck a thing as a used 642 for sale in a gun shop. New, yes, but used? Guess in my area people are just too smart to part with such a gem.
;)

Interest in group buy for LG-405s

Has there been any thought given to whether a group buy might be arranged for Crimson Trace LG-405s for our 642s? Best price I have been able to find is $229.00, but I have to believe that some retailer would go lower if enough pre-orders were submitted under the "group buy" plan. Anybody ever arranged such a thing for any gun accessories? If so, how did all the details get worked out in advance?

Thanks,

Fired my new 637 for the first time

I bought a 637 a couple of weeks ago after reading how much you all
loved your J-frames. It has been snowing and cold for 3 weeks, but I just
could not take it anymore, had to go shoot it today. It was 9 degrees out
and I shot a 15 shot 5 inch group at 10 yards. I loved it, I was afraid that
light little gun was going to hurt but I found it quite plesent to shoot and
suprisingly accurate with 130 grain fmj. There was not near a much recoil
as I had expected, next 135 +Ps.:D

Congrats on the 637. Mine chewed up my trigger finger but, as they say, YMMV. I think you'll find +P's a little more, um, "interesting"!

One Bohemian (Mark:)

You are in the "Midwest." If you are at all close to Indy, you might want to swing by the next Indy 1500. When I was there in October, there was a factory Crimson Trace rep as well as a reseller doing DEEEEEEP discounts on both Crimson Trace and Lasermax.

The next show is March 16,17,18th.

Good luck!

Re: Interest in group buy for LG-405s

I'm with ya on this idea, if it is even possible. I'd love to have some CT grips on my 642, but I just can't justify shelling out $230 for them. Heck, that's damn near what the gun cost me. :what:

Im certainly an "interested party" on the group buy, depending on what price. Who can spearhead it and email someone?

Today, after picking up my new Marlin 39A at a gunshop in Salem,
I went by Sportsman's Warehouse to look at scopes for it.

While I was there, I bought a shotgun case,
picked up a new sling, fondled a SW 686+,
(which WILL be my next revolver  ),
and looked for some Speer Gold Dot 135 gr. GDHP for the 642.

But there were none of those 135 gr. on the shelf.

All manner of 9 mm, .40, .45 ACP,
but no 135 gr. .38.

Instead, I found Speer Gold Dot 125 gr. GDHP.

Hmmm. I decided to pass on the 125 gr. until after some research.

:scrutiny:

So, tonight, I did some reading trying to suss out the difference
between the 125 gr. v 135 gr.

I found little but this informative, well-written essay
which showed up in a Google of "Speer Gold Dot 125 gr".

Can anyone enlighten me
about the differences between
the 125 gr. and 135 gr?

Are there substantive differences?

I'm guessing the answer is yes
since so many use the 135's.

But I'm curious.

Reportedly, Speer was asked by NYPD to develop a GD defensive load oriented toward the short-barreled J-frame. Since the 125gr +P GD load was already in existence, it may be inferred that it may have left something to be desired when it came to short-barrel revolver 'performance', in someone's opinion, somewhere ... at least in the shorter barrels.

Here's a link to the .pdf online report published by Speer regarding the development and initial testing done for the 135gr +P GD bullet.

I was going to expalin it all for you but the link Nematocyst-870 provided did it very well.

I am carrying Speer's Gold Dot Short Barrel 135 gr ammo in my J frame. It shoots well and is very accurate.

Count me as yet another member of the 642(-2) club. I carry mine in a FIST pocket holster.
