I have been reloading for about 2 years. I was told by experienced people before I started that I probably wouldn't realize any saved money, I would just shoot more. They were exactly right! I reload 380acp, 9mm, 38sp, 357mag, 44mag, 45acp, 30-06, 30-30, 35rem and shoot them all 10 times more than I did before I started reloading because it's more affordable. I do not reload anything that I carry as that is not wise legally. It's a full blown hobby just like shooting. If you don't have the time or don't want to make the time, then it probably would not be worth getting started. That's exactly what those experienced ones told me about 2-3 years ago.

DAdams: Gander's ammo prices stink lately. I used to buy all my 45ACP there; $9.99 for a box of Blazer Brass. It's $17.99 now

9mm is over $10

DA,

I just bought from Natchezss for the first time.

Blazer Brass 115 grain 9mm $6.99 Box of 50
Blazer Brass 230 grain .45 $10.49 Box of 50

I thought is was a good price.

Just went up to the local gunstore with my shiny paycheck...34.99 for 50 remington JHP .38spl +P. Sigh. Needless to say, i did not buy any. My poor 642 is crying.

I'm getting the following for $14.95 box of 50 - all +P's: Remington FMJ, Magtech FMJ, Winchester JSP, Winchester FMJ, Winchester JHP. I don't think that's too bad really - although I've been shooting my 642 like a madman since I got it. I have a line on some case lots of Gold Dot 135's if anyone is interested - drom me a PM. Should be about 8-10 days.

Why are Gander's prices so high and Remy JHP 35-bucks a box??? :what:

BTW - There's no elevation screw on my CT's - called S&W - awesome folks to deal with. Sending me a new set! :cool:

I just blew $50 on two boxes of Corbon DPX from ammuntion to go...shipping included. I just cannot find copper tops anywhere around Olympia, WA. So...I just practice with wadcutters and whatever is on sale at the local guns sotres while packing the good stuff as my carry ammo. I figure my life is worth spending the extra bucks.

Headless-

Good googly man, who is charging that kind of money for plain jane green box .38 +P 125gr USP SJHP?

Have you tried Wal Mart? Sometimes they don't have it but they don't bend you over but about half of that.

Have you noticed the FMJ is more expensive now than JHP? Copper content I guess.

There was a time back in mid December when Wal Mart raised their prices three times in 8 days.

They were getting about 3 boxes of .223 a week and sometimes one. Allocation due to Iraq. 9mm and .223.

I paid $19 even (including tax) for Speer GoldDot 9mm 147gr GDHP box of 20, ouch. Although COR BON 110s were about the same a month or two ago in 9mm. $11.99 for a box of 50 FMJ 115 Independence for the range.

I have gotten into the habit of going to Wal Mart every week, just to see what they have whether I need any or not. 6 months ago they always had the 100 value packs, now not so often. If you buy weekly and put it away until you need it, it's like buying stock. Dollar cost averaging. Sometimes I just walk out, but it is usually because all they have is WWB in 9mm and or .380 which homey don't do. WWB .38 is probably ok. But I havent had time to try it....

Did I tell you the story of the 642-2 Clacker, sigh, probably so. Yuk it up.

Wally World...

I am not a huge fan of Wally World, but have to admit that I do go there to buy ammo. Haven't checked on .38 +P's yet, but I buy WWB 9mm Shooters Packs, (at least a box) every time I walk in the store. I feed em to my IMI and they gobble em up. Nothing says ammo, like cheap ammo that's good...Will be checking on their .38 stockpiles tonight.

In the meantime, I have to say one thing which many of you already know: Smith and Wesson has a superb customer service team. When I called them about the missing elevation screw, the nice rep first said: "Well, we don't have any parts for those grips here" - she paused and I thought: "Great, I have to go through Crimson Trace and it will take forever". Then her pause ended and she said: "But what we'll do is send you out a new set"...Can I confirm your address?".... I almost fell over, which would have been bad as I was driving.... :neener:

+1 on S&W.... I'm fairly sure I'm hooked....

MassMark that is awesome. Now you have two sets. Obviously you will get a screw from CT I'm assuming or did the nice lady ask you to send the others back.

There was a guy on the S&W Forum who had a cracked frame on his 642 and they sent him a new M&P 340 for his trouble. :D Can you say happy camper, although it is for sale on the SW Classifieds. I tried to buy it but couldn't come to terms. As of yesterday he had come down to with $15 of my offer. ;)
Bud's will still be less and his was built on a Monday. :banghead:

I am hoping their service is superlative I asked them to replace mine with a 340 also. :rolleyes: Wonder what the odds of that is?

Did I tell you the story about my 642-2 Clacker? Oh yeah probably so, never mind. :neener:

DAdams

The inside of my Nemisis says "D2" or "02". I cant tell. It is specific for S&W J-Frames. That's why I bought it.

+1 on hooking the 'foot' of the holster on the draw, that works great. Maybe this thing just needs to break in a bit longer.

WWB 38 Special

Wow Mart has WWB 100 round value pack 130gr FMJ for about $23.00

I bought a box - 24.99 (thats inc tax) OTD.

Ammunition Tests

Recall this was posted before. The tests were run again two days ago and rechronographed.
There are also more .38+P tests. You might be surprised. :uhoh: Hmmm who would have imagined the performance of all rounds...COR BON Powerball.

Winchester Silver Tips look good too. Speer short barrel is also impressive. Must take into account the 5th round creepage into the grand scheme of things.

http://smith-wessonforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/695107034/m/7021061012/p/2

Worth another look at this post with revised results.

Some of this is getting down to minutia, I can only take so much. So, just tell me what to use. I think I am staying with the 135 GoldDots in the 642 when all is said and done. Convince me otherwise.

.38 +P Corbon DPX is 110 not 125 grains...that guy you are referring to on the S&W site attempted to test fire auto ammo in a revolver. Um...I wonder why he had problems? Needless to say, if he would have tried the proper .38 Corbon DPX...he would have found that that it outperforms all other .38 Special +P ammo.

USCCA - excellent grassroots organization

Pleased to see so many of you read my post and noted the United States Concealed Carry Association ("USCCA") on my tagline. This is an excellent grassroots organization that's basically a one-man show. Tim Schmidt does a good job with a tough assignment. I would strongly urge anyone who carries to join this organization (I'm sure Tim could use the dues) AND BUY THE CDs WITH ALL THE BACK ISSUES OF HIS MAGAZINE. This isn't just another gun rag. The magazines are more than worth the price of entry. It is extremely pertinent to the issues we face as CCW holders. Now, and especially into the future, information and teamwork are going to be the only way our philosophy will survive. That, plus sealed 6" PVC pipes buried in the yard filled with banned items like S&W 642s - Big Brother lives; she just hasn't taken over yet.

Barrel Thread Issue??

After hitting the range today with my favorite j-frame I of course cleaned the little boom stick.

I noticed when cleaning the barrel (the end closest to the cylinder) a couple loose pieces of metal:eek: !

The metal looks like leftover scraps/shards from the barrel threading process caught between the barrel and frame.

The barrel feels tight and doesn't move.

Have any of you seen this on your gun?

Also, does anyone know if the barrel threads go for the entire width of the frame?

Dawg-

I noticed that on the .38 super too.
I was putting some COR BON in a couple of Speedloaders I bought for the 642, my first. The ammo wouldn't lock down. Strange thought I. Looked at the box and it is .38 Super.

The range and shop I attend has a bunch of newbies working there and I never looked at the box when I bought it. I just buy a box of something I'm close to being in need of to get the better range price. It was supposed to be .38 special +P for my 686.

If they won't take it back can it be run through the 642?

I didn't know you could even shoot those in a .38 revolver. What is the story on that round anyway? Guess I'll have to go research.

Oh no,

There is a certain 442, that I have my eyes on... Afterall, the 642 needs some company don't you think? I'll probably doll one of them up with some fancy grips and the other will have CT's.

How about some more pics of the mystical 442 in all her darkness. :evil:

Dadams: As I understand it...the copper bullets, being lighter than their clad lead counterparts, are a bit larger. Still, they are seated deeper and said bullet should not project out of the casing any differently than normal. To date, I have used Taurus Hex copper tops as well as the Corbon DPX copper tops in my .45 ACP as well as my P3AT with fabulous results. Shortly I will be getting the 110 grain .38 Special +P and give they a whirl.

Read the last few paragraphs on this article on a real time shooting with 40 cal DPX:

http://www.gunthorp.com/ammo basics.htm

Then it's on to Raleigh. I recently introduced a buddy of mine to handguns. He is gravitating to a S&W L frame probably a 686 for a truck piece. He hasn't attained the advanced state of awareness yet to go the carry route. We may try some out at Daviis time permiting. They have a great selection of range guns. The largest and best kept I have ever seen.

DAdams,

I've been to Daviis up in Raleigh (or is it just Davis?). Awesome selection of guns, ammo, and accessories. I was like a kid in a candy store. NIB gun prices were on the high side (Ruger GP100 was $509 their and $455 local), but everything else was reasonable. I didn't have a chance to use their shooting range, but maybe next time I'm up there I'll try it out.

Are all the +Ps where they should be?
Acronyms correct? (I'm not familiar with some; what's TMJ?)

* 80 gr. Glaser Safety Slug
* 110 gr. Cor-Bon DPX
* 110 gr. Federal Low Recoil HS/JHP
* 125 gr. Speer Gold Dots +P
* 125 gr. Winchester +P JHP
* 129 gr. Federal Hydrashok JHP
* 135 gr. Speer Gold Dot +P
* 148 gr. Federal Gold Medal Match full wadcutter
* 158 gr. +P LSWCHP FBI (specify brand in post below)
* 158 gr. Buffalo Bore +P FBI
* 158 gr. Magtech Semi Jacketed Hollow Point (SJHP)
* 158 gr. Speer +P TMJ
* Home brew reloads (specify by posting below)

Okay, let's help Nem out here, shall we? :)

The 110 Cor-Bon DPX and 158 Magtech are both +P rounds. I think the 129 Hydrashock is too, but you may want to wait for others to confirm.

For those wondering, the Wallie World value pak 38 Special 100 rnds sells for about $24 locally. But I can get 158 grain Remington RNLs at my favorite gun shop for $10.95/50. Not too bad.

The best deal I found on the R38S12 FBI Load was $26.99 plus shipping from The Outdoor Marksman. I'm not sure what shipping would be like, but they have 500 rounds of reloaded 158 grain RNL 38 Special for $65.

Yet another reason to reload...

Happy dance!!! Most of my reloading equipment arrived last night and today. The UPS and USPS trucks were linin' up at the door, it was like Christmas when I got home! So many boxes to open, so much fun! :D

Needless to say, I may not be around The 642 Club much over the coming days (weeks :uhoh: ) while I get setup.

For those of you wondering, this is my setup (prices include shipping):

From ebay:

- Hornady Model M magnetic balance scale, 500 grain capacity: $45

- Lyman Scale weight check: $31

From Harbor Freight:

- 6" Cen-Tech digital caliper, item # 47257, $25

From Kempf Gun Shop (shipping on entire order was $14.06 :D ):

- Kempf exclusive reloading kit, featuring: Lee Classic 4-hole Turret Press for 38/357 Mag, including Lee Lever Prime System for small primers, Lee carbide 4 die set (incl factory crimp die) and shellholder, $144.95

- Upgrade to ProAutoDisk powder measure (I highly recommend), $9.95

- Kinetic bullet puller, $14.95

- 38/357 100 Round MTM ammo boxes (5), $12.50

That about does it (except for manuals). I also bought a Lee primer pocket cleaner from Midway for $2 or something. So exluding manuals, the above equipment cost just under $300, including shipping.

BTW, I also order the following cast bullets from Kempf (prices include freight):

1000 148 grain double end wadcutters, $54.50
1000 158 grain round nose flat point, $56.50

So basically that's 5.5 cents per bullet. Primers are about $30 / 1000 locally, so that's 3.0 cents each. The only thing I am uncertain of is how long the powder will last. Note that the cost of reloading is heavily depending on whether or not you buy your brass or pick up good quality stuff at the range (if you range permits that). The brass is the most expensive component, so start saving you empties (store 'em in a cool dry place) now if you think their is any chance of reloading for you in the future.

So that's 8.5 cents per round, excluding powder and brass. Guessing 4.5 cents per round for powder, that puts the total cost per round at about $ 13 cents. The cheapest I can buy ammo locally is about 20 cents per round for CCI blazers.

Of course I don't plan on saving money, just more shootin'!

With a brand new facility of over 16,000 square feet, the east coast’s largest indoor shooting range, thousands of firearms and knives, and the most knowledgeable staff anywhere, Davi’s has something for everyone interested in firearms and hunting!

As in Dave eyes.

Nice loading setup there. Some day I am going to do that when I have the time. I just don't have room for such a setup here in FL, unless I convert the great room into a loading operation..NOT. No basement and only a two car garage.

The place in TN now that would be a different story, lots of room for such actvity. At this point I have more money than time and I only get to the range every other week unfortunately so I'll keep buying. Post some pics when you get the benches all set up and looking good.

Clack On - Clack Off....

DAdams:MassMark that is awesome. Now you have two sets. Obviously you will get a screw from CT I'm assuming or did the nice lady ask you to send the others back.

Did I tell you the story about my 642-2 Clacker? Oh yeah probably so, never mind.

Yeah, we're exchanging grips. They're sending me a brand new set in exchange for mine. I was going to send mine in on Monday so I could shoot for the weekend, but after I stopped by my dealer to buy more ammo, (I'm going broke) and told him my story, he reached into a box and pulled out some 642 grips to use for the weekend and shipped out my grips on his dime. Jesus, is everyone nice when you have a Smith and Wesson???

It's funny you mentioned the "clacker", (not funny for you), but I have been dry-firing the bejeebus out of my 642, and keep listening for the "clack"...Hope I never hear it... :eek:
For now, I'm very impressed with Smith and Wesson - hope I get my grips back quick - they even said I could drop them off at the plant which is only 40-minutes from my door. With gas at $2.70 a gallon, mail is cheaper....

Another fine week at club 642. We met some new friends, learned some new things, and everyone is happy and safe. Life is good so far....

Stay alert, be aware, active defense, check your six. Take care of your equipment and have a back-up plan.

Have a nice weekend.
