since yall twisted my arm, I broke down and got a 642 today. My local shop had them on sale for $309, I couldn't resist any longer. I naver have been much of a revolver guy but after tring out my new purchase and slipping it into a IWB holster it may become my primary ccw. I don't think I could get away with pocket carry with it but I don't even notice it when its IWB...... thanks guys.

snap caps? yes or no?

Im shure its been asked before.Whats smith and wessons point of view on firing without snap caps? Ive never pulled the trigger on my 642 yet. Dry fire, good ? or bad?. Also whats a good way to remove a very minor scratch on the outside of the barrel? btw just got a uncle mikes holster, in the pants open top. very nice for the money , like 15 dollars....BTW I sold my glock 23 AND Beretta tomcat, to get the 642.....NO REGRETS.

Everybody should have a jframe. I have a 642 that I carry as a off duty back up in my off hand front pocket. I use a Mika pocket holster. It's a great combo.

I have the 340 and love it, but hate the goofy atom crap S&W put on it. Does anyone know if I can send it back to S&W and ask them to refinish it with just the S&W logo like on the 442?

my first 100 rounds.

My trigger finger is sore...

Do any of you shoot on your middle finger joint/pad?

Just got my 642 (no dash) this past week. Pics are of it with my 442.

Carried in either a Kramer front pocket holster, or a K&D paddle holster.

JMFred... welcome to the club.... I think there's something about this particular pistol which is just very special... obviously, quite a few others feel the same way! Glad to have you aboard!

New to the Club

:) I just purchased my S&W 642 for home protection.
Got a great deal for $329 from my local Cabela's store that just opened.
They listed regular price as $369.99
I have read many of your messages about ammo but I think you are all law enforcement and use it as a backup pistol.
I have it mainly for my wife to use and was wondering what brand and grain ammo we can use at range. Also I found 110g which I'm considering for my wife. Does the 110 still have enough knock down strength?

Interested in hearing your thoughts for home secuirty.

I enjoy shooting WWB 130grain at the range. Good power, good feel, not too much in this little gun. Probably my preferred target round for the 642 at the moment.

For carry (I am not in law enforcement as you mentioned) I carry 125grain Speer Gold Dot's JHP. Many folks carry these, or the 135grain of the same type. Both are adequate rounds for the gun. I would get a couple boxes of 3 or 4 types of ammo and let your wife decide which she is comfortable shooting and stick with it.

Enjoy your little gem. I feel like such an idiot for not getting one years ago. What a great gun, and it has quickly become my "always" gun.

Thank you for your ideas

:) Thank you aguyindqallas for your thought on ammo.
I guess I will have to buy a few boxes and see what she thinks.
It seems that Speer Gold Dot is the most liked ammo.
I will buy a box of 125, 135 and I think they also have 110's

Thanks again

I purchased mine 6 mo ago, and as my first wheelgun was unsure of several issues, but after 1k thru it, there are no doubts.Reliability is beyond question, and despite contrary reports from 45 fans (I am one) as to available power, this thing gets it done. With proper ammo it is formidable. Accuracy out to 25ft. is fantastic. It does take some gettin used to, I admit. It is now like an extention of my hand. Perhaps, the premier pocket protector.
