PottyDoctor,

I also use the Eagle SS grips on my 642 and love them for the control and concealibility (?) they provide. I may stay with the stock UM boots on my new 642 just because I've found the HKS speedloaders I prefer work with the UM but not the Eagles. As for the Pach compac professionals... I have used them before on several guns and really like the way they feel. They are indeed less "sticky" than the Hogues and offer good control. Until the new UM's, these pachs were my favorite rubber grips available.

And to the rest of you... I just ordered a Mika round-cut holster to supplement my Galco pocket since I have way more J-frames than holsters. Also ordered a Blackhawk Askins (http://www.copsplus.com/prodnum4127.php) from Cops Plus for my 640 when I wish to go OWB. Ya'll are costing me money!!! :D

Brassman

Refer to post number 1356.

Spegel grips from Lightning Arms Sports.

That pair is Granadillo.

They are a bit more expensive there, but you get to look at the grips you are buying. Craig and Audrey are great folks.. You will have your grips in about 2-3 days.

Iggy,

Thanks for the Spegel Grip tip! I had totally forgotten about them. I don't currently own a pair but would like to someday. They look like the kind of grip I really like and the colors/finishes are fantastic.

I own a Wilderness Original Instructor Belt like they sell and it is one of my favorite gun belts. Pulls the gun up good and tight, yet comfortable to wear. Highly recommended!

Coffee357,

I really like the looks of that BlackHawk Askins CQC holster. The description talks about how close it pulls the gun up to ones body. What's your take on this aspect since you wear one? I like carrying OWB. I also like using the same holster for the 442 and the 60.

PottyDoctor,

I don't currently have an Askins and haven't tried the one from Blackhawk yet (still on order). I did use an Askins style holster for several years with a 1911 and it quickly became one of my favorites. This design does indeed hold the gun in close without the outward sag you commonly see on the pancakes with the belt slots too far outward of the gun. The holster was also well positioned with the gun sitting low enough to be comfortable and accessible but high enough to be concealable. I am looking forward to trying out the Blackhawk version and I will post with my results.

Coffee357,

Another holster that is supposedly very good at pulling the gun in very tight to the body is the Tucker HF3, http://rlcompanyusa.stores.yahoo.net/hf3reho.html It costs $100 [more with tooled designs] but the quality of Tucker Holsters are top notch. I have had two of their holsters when I had a XD9 Compact. I've not yet had the extra money to buy one for my J Frames, but when I do, I plan on getting the HF3. Note the slots, almost directly under the trigger guard, then the front flap pulls the holster in very tight. And Rob from Tucker is a great guy to deal with; their lead time is currently a little long, but not uncommon from premium leather craftsmen.

That tucker is a great looking holster. The slot proximity to the gun ought to mean a very close fitting holster. As a matter of preference I prefer my guns to ride a little lower, but still...

Wish they had a picture of the holster with a nice Centenial so I could see how it sits in relation to the belt.

Still looking around for wood grips to approximate the Uncle Mike's rubber boots that came on my 642. Does anyone have any experience with Hogue wood Bantams and the use of speedloaders? I have ruled out Eagle SS, even though I think they look better, since Coffee357 informed me that SS grips eliminate speedloader use. Ahrends, Badgers and Spegels look longer than I want for concealment purposes. So I'm back to the Hogue bantams that I first saw, but wanted to check about the speedloader issue. Thanks for the help so far. I knew you guys would have some advice.

Just purchased my 642 on 1/18!

Bought it yesterday and put 100 rounds through it at the indoor range of the shop where I purchased it. I love it! :) Now I have to wait 14 days to pick it up...can't wait.

Instead of pocket holsters can anybody recommend a good clip on holster. I often times am wearing surf shorts and don't have a belt to put a holster on nor any pockets.

I would also appreciate cleaning/care suggestions.

Aloha!

Uncle Mike's clip on holster

Does the clip on the Uncle Mike's holster work pretty well? Exactly which model is it? Thanks for the input everybody!

Would like to apply for membership of the 642 club. It is my primary carry and a great gun.

Welcome TWolf, you are in there like swimwear! Nice 442, although I have several j-frames and not yet a 442, I can see how this thread has increased sales.

Uncle Mikes...

Uncle Mikes Sidekick Size 36.

This holster works best when worn with a belt for it to grab onto. It sits with the cylinder just below your waistband. It felt a little odd at first, but once I found just the right spot it is pretty comfortable for such an inexpensive holster. A pancake holster of some kind may be more comfortable, but they also cost a lot more. I wear mine at 3:00 so that it fits in the small of my right hip.

I was sure to try it out first in the store before I bought it, so you could do the same.

BTW, this thread is OUT OF CONTROL!!! :D

fiVe, your baby looks to be all growed up and matured!

Check it out, we're barely into the new year, passing post # 1000 on 10/26/2006 and we are ALREADY to nearly 1500 posts!

fiVe, be getting your #2001 speech ready ... :p

I just calculated that at the current rate, you will be making post # 2001 around May 13, 2007!

Let's see how close my guess comes .

Will do. It warms my heart to know you've been calculatin'.

(For those who pray, I covet your prayers. My father died Thursday quite suddenly at the young age of 69. His funeral is tomorrow (Sunday). I would like to especially request prayer for my mother.)

fiVe

I know I don't know you, but I know how you feel. My father died 5 years ago this last November at the age of 70. I still think about him everyday and the things we did together for almost 45 years. He was always my closest friend, but still my father in that he didn't mind letting me know when I was doing something that was not right. He didn't allow my brother and I to have firearms, not even BB-guns. My wife says that's the reason we're so crazy about them now. The pain of the loss will get easier as time goes by, but you never forget. One thing is sure though; you WILL be together again and your mother WILL weather her storm as well. You have my prayers.

For a clip holster, you should take a look at the Alessi APX

Link to Lightning Arms Sports... go to Alessi link and to IWB holsters

http://www.lightningarms.com/

Enlarge the APX picture to get an idea of how the Talon clip works.. They don't come loose.

Lou's "Talon" clip is especially effective in gripping your waist band. It has a "talon" that grabs your waistband and forces it into a slot in the holster even if you don't wear a belt.

If you wear a belt, the talon clip is worn under the belt, with forces the talon into your waistband even more and is virtually invisible under the belt.

Another option would be the Alessi Talon or Talon Plus IF Lou makes them for revolvers.

Alessi holsters are a little more expensive, but you will be wearing it for a long long time. LAS will have the holster to you in about 2 days if they have it in stock.

My condolences. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
I lost my father this past Thanksgiving. He was just 63 years old. He died very suddenly from a blood clot following a surgery. As Brassman said, you'll think about him everyday. My father got me into shooting when I was about 15. We would re-load our own 357 ammo a couple of nights a week, then go to the range and shoot them all up. I wanted to be a State trooper. They carried 357 mags back then, so he bought me a Colt Python and made me practice, practice, and practice some more. I never did become a trooper, but I still have the Python and the skills my father taught me. I miss him very much, especially going to the range with him.

642 locks

I bought a 642-2 back in the the middle of December (this years Christmas present to myself :D ) It is now my "allways" gun and my BUG when I'm going to the tough part of town. It is my first smith with the interal lock. I was reading a thread on another post, and they were talking about the lock locking up by itself while they were shooting  I don't know what model smith it was, but has any 642 owner experienced this problem? Someone also suggested putting a drop of red locktite on the lock??? I've got about 500 rounds through mine, about 350 standard 38spl, 150 +Ps, and haven't that any problems with mine. Should I be concerned :uhoh:
Thanks

I bought the gray and black wood bantam j frame round butt grips on smiths web site. the look awesome and feel good does anyone knows who makes them?? Thanks alot for any info
