fiVe,

You and your family have my condolences and my prayers.

My grandfather on my father's side was always someone I looked up to when I was a kid (they lived next door to us). He always smiled and was always happy. Generous and kind, he loved children, especially my sister and I. He was a role model to me. When I got married over 6 years ago in a simple ceremony planned in less than 3 weeks, he and my grandmother were unable to attend my wedding on such short notice. Though my wife and I had been friends since the 8th grade, my grandfather and her had never met. After we married, we planned to travel to Alabama from NC for her to meet him and my grandmother. It was too late, as he suffered a massive heart attack while pulling away from his driveway - he was on his way to pick up his wife from her bus trip to the casinos in Biloxi. She later said that when he did not show up that she just knew. A friend took her home, and the whole way her eyes scanned the ditches for his car. Not 50 from their home, there it was resting against a tree. An AL state trooper was already there.

I've regretted my wife not meeting him ever since, it pains me to this day.

But I've found comfort and solace in the knowledge that she will meet him one day, and maybe I'll get to go fishing with him again. Rest assured you will be reunited again with your father one day, far off in the future of course.

I bought a 642-2 back in the the middle of December (this years Christmas present to myself ) It is now my "allways" gun and my BUG when I'm going to the tough part of town. It is my first smith with the interal lock. I was reading a thread on another post, and they were talking about the lock locking up by itself while they were shooting I don't know what model smith it was, but has any 642 owner experienced this problem? Someone also suggested putting a drop of red locktite on the lock??? I've got about 500 rounds through mine, about 350 standard 38spl, 150 +Ps, and haven't that any problems with mine. Should I be concerned
Thanks

I too own a 642-2, with more than 500 rounds through it without a glitch. I'd rather not have the lock, but it was not enough to stop me from buying my 642, especially since S&W is now under new American ownership.

Most of the cases of lock failure I've seen online or heard about are the following:

  1. Airlites shooting stout 357s mags, as the intense recoil can activate the lock. This doesn't appear to be a problem on the slightly heavier, less potent 642.
  2. Guns that were dropped
  3. A few that don't fit either of the above, but in nearly all those cases the guns had a manufacturing defect that locked the lock in the first 100 rounds or so.

With 350 rounds, I don't think you have anything to worry about. The lock tite idea sounds interesting, anyone else try that? Also, I am a bit of a klutz, so if I ever take the side plate off, who knows, I might accidently break the ILS  .

As I said, I don't like the lock; wish it wasn't there. But, I was able to overlook it in my purchase and my 642 and I are great friends, spending lots of time together!

Anyone know the proper procedure for applying the Loc-Tite to the ILS?

Seems like this would be a better approach than trying to remove it.

I'm a new member

Hey, Can I come in?
I've owned a 36 & a 37 for many years plus a couple of 60's. I've had a CC permit for about 10 years but didn't carry that often. Lately I've become aware of how dangerous the world has become. I sold a shotgun and held onto the money until I decided to buy a 642-2 with it. I liked it so well that I sold my 37 (Airweight) and put some money with it and got another 624-2, both have the S&W (Cremson Trace) Lazer grips, which I love. I gave $445.00 including sales tax and freight for each of them.
I found this page right after I got the first one and was looking for a pocket holster. I read until midnight and decided on a Uncle Mike #3 which I bought the next day, the wife has a purse with a gun compartment that works very well for a lady. I remember thinking that I needed to save this address and then I thought, Naw I'll remember it. Well first thing the next morning I tried to get back on and low and behold I couldn't remember the addy. It taken me almost 2 weeks of trying different addresses before last night I stumbled across it again. Yes I have written it down and saved it to my favorites.
I've shot about 100 rounds through mine and got the lazer sight adjusted and I love it. We've had some bad weather here in the Tulsa area so havn't been able to get out in the last week and half but I've dry fired it (something I learned from this forum) over the last week to get it smoothed out.
Sorry for the long post but I've got some catching up to do. Hope I'm welcome here after all the trouble I had finding it again.
I now have 2 - 642-2, a 60 with a bobbed hammer and a smooth trigger job, a 629 - 44 Mag- 4" W/Scope and a 1911 that I've owned for years.
I've already learned a lot from this page and look forward to learning more from it.
Thanks
Paul
Tulsa, Ok.
It isn't the destination, it's the journey

Bito & okie paul: Welcome! We are glad you are here.

Okie Paul: I'm glad you were able to find us again. I've happily discovered that when you google "642 Club", we are the first item listed.

Thank you all for your prayers and kind words. I was 9 years old when my father took me to the local dump to shoot his single-action .22LR revolver. He was a simple, loving man who was ever-faithful to my mother and always there for his family. We haven't lost him, because we know exactly where he is. He's not dead--just moved, and we will see him again.

Google,

FiVe,
Strange enough the way I found the forum again was, last night I remembered some post that I read about dry firing so I typed in "dry fire 642" and the forum came up and as soon as I saw it I knew that was the one that I had been serching for.
Sure glad I found it, I've already learned so do's & don't for the snubby.

Alright, finally got my 642 today at the Dixie Gun and Knife Classic show in Raleigh, NC. Im joyed. :D :D Shecki humbly requests membership to the club!

I have read that the Uncle Mike's Grips that come stock on the 642/442 are based on the Craig Spegel wood grip design.

Can someone elaborate and/or confirm this? The shape does look almost identical.

Airweight

Y'all mind if I join. The wife & I have one each. She shoots hers better than I do mine LOL. I carry mine in a Uncle Mike's or a Galco poclet holster. If I need to carry IWB I use a Mexican Carry.

Yeah, and a comparison of how the 642 shoots with the stock rubbers vs the woods would be nice.

HighVelocity,

Those are some nice ahrends. Same question as above for your's too ... how do they feel compared to the boot grips?

My condolences go to you, your family, and most of all your mother.
May you all find a way to make it past this most tragic event.

Gargoyle, it's kind that you wrote that.

I've shared some PM's with fiVe today about his family tragedy.
But Gargoyle's post makes me want to say here on the thread that fiVe began that
we're thinking of you, buddy.

Best to you and your family.

642 option

I like to carry my 642 in a smartcarry holster, as I can't often carry my 1911 OWB in my workplace - too awkward. (would be snagging it, plus, concealed means concealed!) I've found my 642 to work well in the coat pocket, and am pondering an ankle holster also. ("darn, where did I put that j-frame?! Ahh, here it is! )
I am not sold on .38 SPC for defense work, but it is better than fists and knives. I've packed the 642 every day for a year, and I feel that shot placement will make up for lack of power, plus, the Crimson Trace may just diffuse the situation before I have to use it. (hope, hope!)
First rule in a gunfight - Have a Gun! :D

New 637

Ok all of you talked me into it. I just bought a new 637 an hour ago.
I have been carring a Firestar M-40 but the 30 oz. was just too much.
I was considering a small .32 but wanted more puch and I stumbled across
all of you talking so highly of your J frames I had to try it. Have not owned
a wheel gun in a long time and I forgot how much I liked them. I had no
Idea a revolver could be this concealable.

Congrats - I have 5 J frames and my 642 with ct grips is my favorite. Its my "always" gun. Its so light, sometimes I forget its in my pocket. The only reason I bought mine was from reading this thread. I'm glad I did :D

I just ordered CT Lg-405's for my 642

I should get them in a few days. I will try them out at the range and post a review. Judging from prior posts it seems that the majority loves their 642s w/ CT...Aloha!

Have not owned a wheel gun in a long time and I forgot how much I liked them.
And so, boys and girls, begins yet another story on the road to wheelgundom,
skirting on the edge of financial disaster as wheelgunnedness moves to near addiction...
(speaking only for myself, of course ... :uhoh: )

:D ;)
