DAdams: Glad to see you are "back in action". That is some mighty fine shootin'!. I think it's gonna be some LG-405's (they do look nice!) for me, too.

Some excellent words of wisdom from Old Fuff:
One other thing, regardless of what you buy to carry, after you get a box, dump the cartridges out and check each one, in one or more of the chambers to be sure they go in. On rare occasions you may find one that doesn't.
Checking mine right now.

Can someone help me locate some moon clips? I have some speed loaders but would like to try some moon clips.

Thanks in advance

Moon Clips

I don't think you will find these 642/J frame rigs designed for moon clips. Cylinder has to be machined with a relief to accomodate the thickness of the clips.
I would be thrilled if I were wrong.

Cheaper Than Dirt

buy some other stuff too because the shipping is more than the strips.

And they are more carriers than speedy but not a bad way to carry a few rounds.

I have gone to three different stores in my area and unfortunately no on carrys them and no one seems to want to order them.
Minimum order is something like $200 for the POP display initially.

There was a photo back a few pages put two rounds on each end. Leave space in the center. Load two at a time. About as speedy as they will get. Me, I'm making sure all is over before I have to reload.

No problem, sevenbark

Thanks for the post about the Milt Sparks. The Summer Speacial and the #1 Heritage seemed to be my favorite. Thanks again.

You're welcome for the recommendation. A lot of people are huge fans of Milt Sparks and their 16-22 week wait on holsters is proof of it. I ordered a VersaMax 2 on February 28th of this year and I still have about a 2-3 month wait left. I have a Canute on order from Ugly Bald Guy (www.ubgholsters.com) to tide me over in the mean time. If his holster is as good as I anticipate it will be, I'm either going to cancel my order with Milt Sparks or get a pocket holster instead. Of course, I'm getting ahead of myself since I don't yet have my J-frame M&P 340.

Mods: (who made the offensive posts go away)
We're indebted. That's what makes this "the high road".
Thank you.

DA: Good to hear you got it back. Dang nice shooting.

Gunwife and other new members: Welcome.

Dawg: Would you please name the holster in this pic?
(It may be the one I'm looking for.)

All: This thread continues to be the epitome of why I'm a participant of THR. Thanks.

inexpensive holster

This was a Don Hume SOOT. Inexpensive...simple...very thin...and what I use when I do not pocket in the Mika.

Took the new gun (642) to the range for the first time and fired 100 rds. If I knew how to post pics you could see how pleased I am. Shoot std pressure fmj round nose Remington and Magtec 158g jhp. The Magtec were very hard to eject cartridge after firing, I will not shoot them again, do not know why but the crimp job looked funny IMO. I need to talk with someone about putting the littel red mark on the front sight, sight is hard to see. The biggest problem is my 44 year old eyes looking through bi-focals, the way I have to hold my head to get the sights clear. Yes I wear progressives maybe lineed bi-focals would help or CTC, I really not sure if the CTC would work for me. Are the as comfortable as factory grips? Just to wrap up the post thanks to THR and THE CLUB. How do you guys keepem looking otd new? Thanks Again

Sevenbark,

You need to take a look at CT grips. I think you would like them.

I have progressive trifocals and I have plenty of troubles with sight pictures. CT's put them right where you want them.

I have been lurking around this thread gathering information and have made my mind up to purchase a 642. My local shop currently only has the 642 with crimson lasergrips in stock for $509. Apparently they have recently placed a large stocking order with S&W and are expecting a shipment with the non-lasergripped 642's within the next 2 weeks. I was quoted a price of $405 for the standard 642 and was wondering if the added cost for the lasergrips is worth it.

Thanks in advance.

Yes get the one for $509 and the grips. The least expensive we've been able to find is $229 from DiscoveryOptics.com.

Say 'ello to my little friend!

I'm in! This club ought to get a kickback for every 642 that is sold. It certainly helped me realize all of the advantages of this pocket dynamo. After reading many posts on Crimson Trace I elected not to go with the model that S&W sells because I thought the LG405's would be better for me. I just got home and haven't installed them yet.

This is my first revolver and I do have a question about cleaning. Can I use the same patches, rods and boresnake that I use for my 9mm SemiAuto? Or do I need different sizes? Also, do I put a light coat of oil in each cylinder or leave them dry?

Thanks

I was at the DFW gun show today and almost pulled the trigger on a 642 with laser grips for $509. Is that a good price? I can always go back tomorrow and get it.

Wow, so many new members! Welcome all ... I need to update my tracking sheet again of J Frames snubs sold by The Club, I've let it slip lately.

This is my first revolver and I do have a question about cleaning. Can I use the same patches, rods and boresnake that I use for my 9mm SemiAuto? Or do I need different sizes? Also, do I put a light coat of oil in each cylinder or leave them dry?

The same cleaning gear will work, as the 38 special is a .357 caliber and 9mm is .355. As for oiling the chambers, I put a very thin layer on, then run a dry patch one time through each chamber. Leaves just enough oil to prevent corrosion, but not enough to do bad stuff to the ammo.

I'm in! This club ought to get a kickback for every 642 that is sold.

Yeah, we thought so too. A while back we started the $Five for fiVe Drive to collect enough money so fiVe, President of The 642 Club :D could buy himself a wheelgun of his choice. Sort of our way of saying thanks. The idea was first circulated around page 60. Unfortunately, very little was raised so the whole project was abondonded last week.

It was a worthy effort, but it just didn't pan out. :(

As far as putting the red mark on the front sight of your 642, I went to a hobby shop and bought a small bottle of bright red model paint and painted mine with a toothpick. It's cheap and lasts a pretty good while, especially if when you are cleaning you don't rub it with solvent. Of course if you do manage to remove the paint while cleaning, you can always easily re-apply the red paint. I don't use a laser for the same reason I drive a manual transmission Bronco, use the manual mode on my 35mm camera, don't own a progressive reloading press, etc. You get the idea. However, if my 50 year-old eyes keep getting worse, I may have to reconsider the CT grips.

After a couple of range sessions, I'm getting pretty confident with mine. I don't think I'll be getting 2" groups at 20 yards with it  but when the barrel's this small, 4" groups at 7 yards are OK.

At first, it was frustrating, but then I had to remind myself: it's not a Sig, it's a snubbie. A really short snubbie. What's important is that it fits my hand very well, the kick is manageable, even with the 125gr +P, and man, is this gun light.

(The ironic thing is, I bought this gun for deep concealement at a job that prohibits carry. Now I'm moving to a job where carry is allowed, so she'll be a "backup" instead of a primary.)

Here she is with Badger walnut grips. Sorry for the dust; she was covered in oil, and hey, I'm not Oleg...

Went to my gun shop today to get some ammo for the range tomorrow.
(Doing the "basic handgun safety" class required for CCW.
It starts at 8 AM in the morning, and - being a person that works nights -
I'm usually not up until noon. (Does time really exist before noon?)

But, I digress.

I got 100 .38 rnds to be equally distributed between the 686 and the 642.

While there, I checked out two IWB holsters:

* A Galco that I was not so impressed with. (The clip system that attaches to the belt to prevent it coming out when drawing was very cumbersome to hook up; and I didn't find it very comfortable.)

* A Desantis "Cozy Partner". They didn't have the one I need for my 642, but the concept was interesting. I like the fact that the belt attachment uses snaps, and that there's a large leather flap that sits between gun and skin.

Any opinions? Pros? Cons?

OK, going to bed now, still skeptical that time exists before noon. :scrutiny:
