Recoil is largely a function of stock design, not caliber. My Ruger #1 is very comfortable to shoot. And yes, everything from 110gr varmints to 220gr elk, the gun will do everything in N.America.

Stock design, action type (gas operated autos have softer recoil) and overall rifle weight.

I can shoot a trainload of ammo from a Garand non stop (except for my arms getting tired of holding the thing up). Recoil is more of a push compared to a snap-kick of a light bolt action.

When I look at my rack, I see five .30-06s, an M1 Garand, two M1903A3s, a Ruger M77 and a pre-64 Winchester Model 70.

Whenever a new rifle comes out, and I speculate on buying one, I think about which cartridge I want it in -- and the answer is always .30-06. I'm like the banjo player who had only one string -- all the other banjo players are looking for the place, I've found it.

Harry, you and the rest of the momentum crowd have been wrong since the invention of smokeless powder. But if it works for you fine. There's a lot of money being made off superstition in the gun world.
I find it amusing that you would equate momentum a law with superstition when kinetic energy is a theory. Lol

As for the 45-70 being superior for bear? The ballistics don't look good. I assume we are talking rifle ammo, not handgun. While the 45 is a big heavy round, it is very slow, and the delivered ft-lbs of energy are low.

Have you ever seen a Bear (or anything else) hit with a 45-70?

The same word comes up every time - Devastating.

Terms like "energy" mean very little outside of on paper ballistics. Real world doesn't always synchronize with mathematicians theoretical performance.

I was a fast is better kind of guy for most of my life. When a friend showed up and Deer camp with a lever action 44 I laughed at him. When I saw how well it performed I ate crow. Later another pard took an Elk with his 45-70 Sharps using a 405 gr cast bullet jogging along at maybe 1300 fps - talk about smack down... I've seen Elk absorb a 300 Win Mag shot through the boiler room and run off like nothing happened (was found later). I've also witnessed good hits with fast bullets on other Deer and Black Bears with less than stellar performance and tough tracks for recovery and even lost game. SUCKS bad and it stays with you. I figure when you lose, don't lose the lesson. Learn from it. Luckily back when I was in my forties, I could still learn a thing or two.

Nothing worse in my opinion than following a Bear's miniscule blood trail into heavy cover as it gets dark.

So far that hasn't been an issue with big slow heavy bullets. Two holes, lots of blood, no tracking required.

Back on topic. Versatility wise you are hard pressed to beat a 30-06. It'll simply do it all.

momentum vs energyI

I did a little calculating for you guys. According to the principle of conservation of momentum (action/reaction) the momentum that the bullet delivers to the target ia always LESS than that delivered to the shooter. If the shooter drinks a warm cup of coffee his mouth and throat will absorb more energy than if he is shot twice in the teeth with a 30/06. This does not mean that one should hunt bears with a thermos of warm coffee and put the butt of the rifle agianst the bear and pull the trigger. The 45/70 and the 30/06 are both more effective on game than a calculator.
