Recoil is largely a function of stock design, not caliber. My Ruger #1 is very comfortable to shoot. And yes, everything from 110gr varmints to 220gr elk, the gun will do everything in N.America.
Stock design, action type (gas operated autos have softer recoil) and overall rifle weight.
I can shoot a trainload of ammo from a Garand non stop (except for my arms getting tired of holding the thing up). Recoil is more of a push compared to a snap-kick of a light bolt action.
