Sort of a "nothing but stickies" page, Steve?

I know the .45 info on the gunsmithing page is a godsend, as is the shotgun info.

A few of the better "what is a..." threads could come in handy as well.

Stickied page -- I LIKE IT!!

SM, I think you brought up a winner.

I have a confession, folks.
Search doesn't work well for me.

Either I put in too few criteria and wind up with 10,000 posts to dig through, or too many and don't come close to what I want.

After 15-20 minutes of frustration like that, you wind up saying "Ohhh, stuff", and starting a new thread to ask the question that you were trying to get an answer to.

Is it possible that searching is a skill?
If so, snarling at a new kid on the block cuz he didn't do it well isn't a kindness.

But I would be HAPPY to wander through a page of "Common topics" before clamoring on the open discussion page to get my questions answered.

What's it take to move this idea forward?

Old Fud
carebear,

Then write me a new Word Document on something you have experience in that is often asked here frequently.

PM me when you have a topic and we will go from there. Deal?

Anyone else up to this Challenge? Anyone else want to raise the bar?

Yes, I am challenging everyone on this board - there are more of you than there are of me. Bring it on.

Instead of posting to something the answer has been given...
Instead of re-reading the same posts, and replies...
Instead of un-productive time reading this forum because of no new posts that interest you...

I challenge you to spend that time and
1) gather from archives FAQs
2) write a Word document on a topic a person can learn from and pass forward.

Others are already doing so. I already have some works in my posssesion. Are YOU going to let the other members do all this "bar raising" alone?

Can't died, I done killed Can't a long time ago - so there goes that excuse.

Need an idea? PM me, I have quite a few areas I can suggest.

I'm only a 51 y/o 6' 170# male - a bit out of shape, I challenge you, bring it on.

I'm waiting....

Steve

Hey guys,

If we're going to write up FAQ's or tutorials, let's do it in either plain text, uBB-Code, or HTML. No sense in making the information more difficult to access (e.g. Word).

And yes, I have already done so. 6.8 SPC FAQ, Optics for Practical LR Shooting.

Zac Smith,
PM sent.

I agree.

I was being selfish / lazy for me, as being an older returning IT student I have to use XPPro in studies. Sorry...kind of time crunch fme or involved too.

At this time I have some Material from archives and New Works , and New Works being written exclusivley for this project.

I am holding onto to these - as I forward them to some Staff that are aware of what I am doing.

Rich Lucibella is also aware over at TFL.

These new works are NOT being posted - yet. Authors agree with me in NOT posting instead waiting to put these into better use.

Oh and the fact I/ we want to blow some minds around here on Topics being written about.

:)

I love the search feature, as was mentioned I joined because of it.

I was doing a lot of web searches for firearms info and ept getting many results from some place called The High Road I didn't want to join another discussion board but having seen how much info I got just through searches I figured I could get a much more by joining and thusly I did.

sm,

I'll give it a whirl, though I would have to describe myself as more of a generalist on carry/firearms info than an expert on anything in particular. I'll be doing a lot of search function research.

I do have an idea for a topic though.

The process you're using for the stuff you're holding back might be a good model, a few wiser / more knowledgeable folks to review what's submitted for any egregious errors prior to posting the info.

I believe I'm beginning to describe a Gun-Wikipedia. :D

Matthew

carebear,

:D

Tell you what I need and would greatly appreciate.

I need a list of all our Members that are Authors. Those that have been published , such as novels, contributions to SWAT, Conceal Carry Magazine, personal books on a variey of genre'.

Why? Simple, allow me give an example. Someone reads a Review by Mr. Stephen A. Camp and thinks " you know, I would really like to read more of his writing, I really like his style".

What do you know? Mr. Camp has book on the Browning High Power, and lookee here - he wrote a novel too.
:)

Besides Mr. Camp, we have John Ross, Matthew Bracken, George Hill, 4v50Gary, mete,...

Yep this means using more than just our Search Funcltion perhaps...

Still how nice to have Tom Givens, Mas Ayoob, Awerbuck, Marty & Gila Hayes...etc in a resource cross referenced with Training and books these folks have authored.

Thank you for stepping up and raising the bar carebear :D

Beats the heck out of TV and "what gun for kumquats?" don't it? *grin*

Next!!

:)

Steve

Thank you carebear.

Oh btw "at my age" - In 1971 I was a sophmore in HS checking out mini-skirts when you were born. That dog won't hunt with me ...:)

Re: Resource - needed...
Hi.

I need members whom are qualified to write us a work on the following please.

1. Compass.
Buying, using, topo maps, the whole enchilada. For hunters needing a Resource on using a Compass.

2. GPS.
Same deal as the compass. GPSs may not have satellites, or the batteries go out, so while one does use a GPS, one should have a compass and know how to use.

3. Our authors. [taken, carebear]
I still need input from all members whom have published works, be it their own books, novels or articles in magazines.

4. Bow & Arrow.
From hunting to defensive tool perspectives. Includes crossbows , compound, long bow, making use, arrows...

5. Woodscrafts
From hunting to using these skills as defensive means, to Survival ( gathering water, edible plants, bugs, making a fire, signaling...

6. Kids.
I would appreciate works of kids learning to shoot, attending a kid's event, in competition, from air guns, rimfire, BP, centerfire, shotguns.

a) Make -A-Wish type actvities for kids. Hunting, shooting, anything a kid might want to do as relates to Responsible Firearm Ownership.

7. Ladies
I would appreciate works of Ladies akin to the kids.
From learning to shoot, competitions, hunting.

8. Ladies only hunting.

I really want this work done, and by more than one.

a) Ladies that hunt no matter what they hunt.
b) Information on Ladies only hunts, or Ladies and Daughters hunts.
It could be a Ladies Cancer Survivors only hunt, Ladies and daughters only hunt.
From special needs that need to be addressed, to where to go, outfitters, guides, getting prepped.

Yes I have other topics as well.

I appreciate folks stepping up and taking one of these.

sm said:
...edible plants, bugs...
Did somebody ask about "edible bugs"?

I have a BS in entomology. I can write an essay on those.

Cicadas are my favorite. Fry'em up, taste like chicken. :D

Oh, wait...:uhoh:

:p

+1 sm. I've been mulling over the FAQ issue for a while, and have been needing a push to gather some of my stuff together for posts like "we've discussed this thoroughly, read page X before continuing to argue about something others have though through better." AR15 food, bug-out-bags, RKBA vs. nukes, RKBA & religion, and point-shooting are subjects which oddly suck me in repeatedly.

Note that contributors (from trolls to masters) and boards (from flamefests to THR) have discernable life-cycles. Would be good for someone high-up to consider what these are to better manage the flow thereof.

Godel's Incompleteness Theorem oddly applies: (badly paraphrased) every system has flaws which cannot be corrected within that system. Learn to manage the problems, as eliminating them only creates different problems.

Nematocyst-870,

I so want to address the fact you have a BS in something...:D

I appreciate your volunteering and look forward to reading your excellent contribution.

All Right Dagnabbit!!

Where be the Women-Folk?!?

Don't make me start Sending PMs to you like I am about to , Sandy Ascraft is #1 on my list btw to get one.

I know Sandy shoots - she took 1st place in the "shoot the varmit from the 2nd story bathroom window event" :D

I know she has competed, has stolen her husband's 28 ga shotgun, made him buy her another one and has shot Sporting Clays.

Teenage ladies shooting competition?

hso and madmike, - don't make me bug you to have your ladies submit something...

Lee Lapin, I know the good PhD can write and can shoot most anything extremely well.

For everything we contribute - Sarah Brady, Kennedy, Shumer, Fieinstein, UN Gun control etc., ...the whole bunch against us, another solid piece of granite is built to Defend and Preserve Freedom from Tyranny.

Each keystroke for Responsible Firearm Ownership is a Round fired against Tyranny.

One would be hard-pressed to try to measure the value of THR. This site has expanded my horizons and knowledge concerning the world of firearms, concealed carry, situational awareness, etc.

Oleg, thanks for this priceless resource. I'll be sure I do my part to maintain the standards set forth here.

Grateful regards,
fiVe

hso,

Thanks!

So what is your wife going to write about?

That precious child, well it is summer, no book reports and all, what is she going to share with us?

The family that contributes together...:D

hso,
seriously - I took it upon myself to add a "Ladies" and "Kids" section to my outlines. Didn't ask, then again me being me, just did it.

Kids: yep, I already have something being reviewed and written for that section. I need more.

Is it madmike ( I apoligize if I got the username incorrect)
Still his and your daughters are better examples of Responsible Firearm Ownership than some adults.

I personally would be honored and I know, other adults, using a Resource, would learn a LOT from a younger persons perspective, such as those two precious young ladies.

Please.

Whatever the ladies want to do, be it learning, safety, how to act on a range, equipment, anything. Anything another young person could learn from, and, of course an adult.

Kids passing forward to kids...I'm 51 and still a kid and I admit I have learned from what these two young ladies have shared with us in posts.

Steve

sm, I am trying to remember all that I forgot whilst I was into my orienteering stint while in the Corps. I am trying to gather my spider-webbed and dusty thoughts on maps and compasses.

THR is my Home on the web. I like you to have the dirt off of your shoes when you come in, preferred leave 'em in the entryway, put your feet up and enjoy the conversation and share or as sm puts it "pass forward" anything you you just happen to be good at.
OBTW I believe I will have another drink, where is my Milk??? how about a few cookies.
