Oleg and Staff,

I think improvement should always be welcomed. I would also like to thank you all for the wonderful job you do in keeping this the best board on the net.

Regards,

James

I suppose there may have been fireworks in the week or so that I was absent to warrant this thread.
I had to take a break, my backlight was out on my notebook but although I have a backup I took it as an opportunity to walk away from THR for a few days, the squabbling here over matters that are either irrelevant or simply not worthy of disagreement was distracting me.
I joined THR to learn about firearms and the craft thereof, not to be converted to a political or religious persuasion.
Or to hear about the idiocy of the British/French/any other Europeans or rest-of-worlders every time a hat drops, which at my last count was several times daily.
My final straw was having to read about alcohol and guns being a 'good mix'.
As such I welcome any efforts to clean up the site, even if in doing so I find myself swept out.

Oh, and for the love of dog PLEASE REMOVE THE SMILIES, especially the banal head hitting wall effort, they make me grimace with curmudgeoness every time they present themselves.

The very worst concept a human can live by is to love everyone equally and unconditionally, for that means that no depravity can offend them.

I'm evidence that you can have dissenting opinions without being booted..I think the difference is in the behavior of those disagreeing. Over on APS, we have all kinds of discussions, on really controversial topics sometimes, and often some great disagreements..but everyone respects each other and the arguements are based on ideas, not people. I've always felt I learn more from people who don't think like me than I do from people who do, and from being forced to look at my own beliefs and ideas. I hope someday, THR can get (back?) to that point.

I think you are ltraveling in the proper direction, Oleg. Although I still like the "Oxygen Thief" designator. Perhaps with the handle displayed in, say, green?

When I log on, I bring up four (4) gun-related forums. THR and TFL are strictly gun related while TFF and MC are friendly-chat among gunners. The best of both worlds, I feel.

I think it's an excellent course of action and will support it 100% even if it means I get ditched in the process.

I enjoy contributing, but I enjoy reading even more. I think that improving the signal to noise is always a good thing and even if I were not allowed to post here, I would still use THR as an information resource.

I have seen other forums choke to death by trying to be too tolerant. 'Tis better to be cull and be healthy than to invite everyone in and drown in the crowd.

I am so glad that THR is going to try to get back to where it was. I was kind of tired of seeing some of the "Oxygen Thieves" make extreme personal attacks on anyone who had a difference of opinion or to post something that had nothing to do with guns, the 2nd amendment or anything else that would be beneficial here.I am SO picky about the sites that I visit on the Internet. Therefore, THR is one of the first that I go to when I log on.:)
I really appreciate the mods here and of course Oleg who lets us vist this site. I am looking forward to seeing the improved THR.:p

Although I haven't had many problems with threads I've started I have seen a few unwelcomed comments in others. I fully support "thinning the herd" of people who have proven they are unable to post in a helpful nonaggressive way.

Works for me.

Best of luck to the new mods. Ya'll do great work here, but I don't think I envy your job. :D

Halleluiah, Oleg!

If this is what it takes to get us back to "the old days", I'm all for it.

Fire at will.

Trolls and Flamers

Oleg, in a previous post you mentioned "Trolls and Flamers". I'm somewhat new here, could you explain what Trolls and Flamers are. Thanks

Trolls & Flamers

Oleg has stepped away from his desk for a moment, so please allow me to address your query.

This Wikipedia article is a thorough discussion about trolls, their culture and history. Here's a short quote from that article

In Internet terminology, a troll is someone who comes into an established community such as an online discussion forum, and posts inflammatory, rude or offensive messages designed intentionally to annoy and antagonize the existing members or disrupt the flow of discussion...The contemporary use of the term first appeared on Usenet groups in the late 1980s. It is widely thought to be a contraction of the phrase "trolling for suckers," itself derived from the sport fishing technique of trolling. The latter can be compared with trawling...The word likely gained currency because of its apt second meaning, drawn from the "trolls", which are portrayed in Scandinavian folklore, and children's tales, as often ugly, obnoxious creatures that are bent on wickedness and mischief. The image of the troll under the bridge in the "Three Billy Goats Gruff" emphasizes the troll's negative reaction to outsiders intruding on its physical environment, particularly those who intend to graze in its domain without permission.
Also from Wikipedia, here's a definition of flaming (which is what "flamers" do) from this essay:
Flaming is the act of posting messages that are deliberately hostile and insulting, usually in the social context of a discussion board on the Internet. Such messages are called flames, and are sometimes posted in response to flamebait.

The new moderators are Brian Williams, Geekwitha.45, Larry Ashcraft, Xavierbreath, and Zak Smith. Oleg will also be re-shuffling moderator assignments to give us a bit of fresh air.

Biker, I wanted to nominate Gunkid as a moderator to look after your needs, but we figured that would be cruel and unusual punishment . . . I'm not saying who for! :neener:

I'll admit I almost dropped out last summer but the pull of gravity is strong on THR. I'll also admit I almost never look at stickies but I'm glad I noticed this one. I happened on the quote-of-the-day thanks to this thread:

I've always felt I learn more from people who don't think like me than I do from people who do.

On one topic in particular that gets discussed to a considerable extent here on THR I've almost done an intellectual 180 based on many exchanges where I was often one of the contrarians and a minority contrarian at that. Living proof the quote is true, at least in my case.

The topic is unimportant. The process is.

Who is to say that some of the anti 2A trolls and bomb throwers that come to THR to cause hob are not changed by the process? We’ll never know who or how many, but some for sure. What a worthy achievement!

I try not to play the +1 game, but i gotta on this one.

+1, Selfdfenz; good point, nicely said.

Process is everything.

Indeed, from the perspective of the biological sciences,
life itself is a process called metabolism.

No metabolism, no life.
No process, no forum.

Long live process.

On Board

Hi all,

I'm on board with the re-energizing and advancement of the THR rules of engagement.

I have to admit my interest in THR was beginning to wane through the spring. Not uniformly, but increasingly, persons were attacked rather than their ideas debated. Abstracted one level further were the blanket statements on liberals, anti-gunners, and politicians. Our 2A community gets mad when blanket and generalized charges are levelled against us, yet THR 'allowed' it to be done to others.

I don't have enough THR history to say its a return to our roots, but hooray for the change.

Now Oleg, if you're looking for further advice:

1) Continue to clamp down on the zealots. Even tongue-in-cheek I'd assert that neither THR nor I need a single more example of Glock-bashing, as an example.

2) Design a 'Research First' policy. The same questions come up again and again and again ad naseum, particularly from my limited view, in the Rifle Forum. Filtering these will enhance the vibrancy of the all forums. In particular, this repeating echo wears me out.

And of course, thanks for all your hard work and that of the Mods,

John
