Are you talking about FN's 5.7x28 USG pistol? If so then it's not a bad pistol I would say. They're reliable, extremely accurate, super high capacity, almost no recoil, available this year with Trijicon night sights, spaceguns. I say spacegun because the only downside to it is it's looks and the fact that ammo for it can be scarce. You won't find ammo for it at Wal-Mart, but I don't think anyone expects to anyway. Expensive gun for a novelty piece in my opinion, but definitely an oddball weapon.

they have a few at the local store along with a silenced p90. I picked it up and it felt like a toy gun 
, havent talked to anyone that has personnaly shot one. The barrel on that thing looks like a straw thou 
Ive never shot a polymer gun but hope to test it out by getting a uspc .45 soon and maybe a fullsize if i like it.

Get something in .357 Sig, or .40 S&W if you want fast and zippy. I don't get the pistol, or the round.
Does anyone know why it is so expensive?
Is there something particularly expensive about its manufacture, or is this the price set by the company due to lack of competition in this caliber?
I have held them and they fit my hand nice, are very light and hold 20 rounds. It would be great for plinking or hiking. I would consider one at the $450-500 mark, but not at $800-900. Although I could afford the ammo the price of the pistol is just too much for me.

Well, it seems to me that FN spent a lot more money to create the Five-Seven pistol than they do to create a FNP .40. Everybody makes pistols in 9mm and .40, but 5.7's a whole new round, requiring a brand new pistol to handle it. Cartridge is longer than most handgun rounds, so you need a brand new frame.
Then you've got to tool up for a brand new cartridge. More money.
Then you've got to deal with the PDW business not being so good (it seems) as was once thought. I think that FN and HK went into development of PDWs with the impression that NATO was gonna adopt the best platform for RE folk... I don't think it's happened yet. Thus they've got to recoup their investment.
