The M1A is a beautiful rifle...

I know I'm not dead on, but the ballistics calculator indicated that a 5.56 62 FMJ-BT would be doing 1800 fps at 500 yards. Is that bad?

I don't know. It depends what you're using it for. If you're just interested in shooting the occasional varmint or strictly paper, its fine.

But if the effect on target is actually important to you, then it might be a little disappointing. Note that this doesn't have to mean terminal ballistics on humanoids. It could be something as simple as the sound of the round impacting steel plates, or the authority with which it allows you to bust apart cinder blocks.

Consider that Federal advertises their American Eagle 150 gr FMJBT in .308 to impact at about 1800 fps at 500 yards as well. The only difference is a bullet of over twice the mass is a lot more impressive to witness at that range.

The 168 gr Gold Metal Match does even better. True, it starts at "only" 2650 fps, or a little less from the shorter barrel of a semi-automatic, but at 500 yards it still has 1778 fps. This gives it 1179 foot pounds of energy and due to it having 2.5x the mass of the 5.56, a lot more momentum.

Of course, I am biased. The .223 does fine as a ground squirrel rifle, but I was never impressed with it in any capacity above or beyond that.
