Eventually.....

That carbine is nice, but Idk if I want a carbine or a full size for my first mosin.

How much will M38s go up?

Spec, I started with the M44, then got a 91/30, and just yesterday, aquired an M38. I loved the 1st two and I'm confident that I will this M38 as well, once de-cosmolined, cleaned up & tested. When I got my M44 3 years ago, I gave $100 for it at a show. M38's were $10 higher. I gave $165 shipped for my M38 this week off a milsurp site, which is an averageish price for them there, but a very low price from Gunbroker or Auctionarms these days. I knew I had not gotten one when I should have, but also knew if I was going to "jump, to jump now " on one. They'll do nothing but get higher. I agee that you should also get a 91/30, but prices on them have not risen a great deal yet from when I started my Mosin interest. Good luck !

full size is nice, because its got a nice feel to it, but a carbine is nice also.

I have two 91/30s, one just got chopped up and is undergoing a stock change and paint, the other is too beautiful to touch.

I went shooting Sunday with both of them, I got so sick of the cosmoline I thought I washed off melting and sticking to everything. I came home, stripped it again and washed it, only to relive the wood that goes around the barrel was literally rotting away. So I cut it off, decided to try and make a "customized" mosin out of it. Especially since its still a great shooter.

Got the M38. Was preowned, no cosmoline, beautiful crown and shiny bore. Round receiver Izhvek, 1944, with original M38 stock.

Price, $149.95.

Pics coming soon.

Not sure if this is the right place, but can anyone tell me the approximate value of a Romanian M44?

My Mosin Story

I will post some pics later ~ My Mosin story. A guy came through on of our firearms schools about 7-8 years ago and while we were talking, he said he had bought 5 old military rifles in unissued condition (bulk buy???) and if I wanted one, he would let me have it at his cost ($60). I said sure, sight unseen, at that price. He brought me a like new 1944 carbine. Wow!!! Took it apart and cleaned the packing grease off of it that was most likely post WWII vintage. Next, I refinished the stock ~ stripped it, gave it a good cleaning and then multiple coats of Tru-Oil. It turned out to be one of the best shooting and beautiful rifles that I own and definitely at the lowest price.

here is the start of my mosin custom stock. i believe the wood is cherry. unsure really. i just know its a hardwood. the scope came in the other day and i placed it ontop of the wood as a prop. here is the specs on the scope from the site i bought it from

BSA S412X40WR RIFLE SCOPE-

-4-12 X 40MM

FOV 25-10.5' AT 100 YARDS

well after about half days work here is what ive got now. not much more til stock is ready for paint or stain.

the only issue i had was after i placed the action in the stock the bolt was aweful stiff. i sprayed a little hoppey oil on it and it works better. any way to make the bolt action float like butter on these? my other one with stock stock is stiff also. so i know it cant be the custom stock i made.

Just finishing my mosin. The front part of the stock covering the barrel was rotting, and the half that I painted was all knicked up, but the mosin was a fantastic shooter, so I decided to make it "my own". I love the look of stock mosins, but this one deserved a make over :)

anyone know how to adjust the trigger pull? i would like to get this thing down to a hair trigger.... i probably wont get to work on it again til saturday, im working 12hr days 5 days a week and saturday is a half day. so,,,,doesnt leave much time.

plans are to extend the bolt lever also to make it easier to open and close the action. kinda similar to the sniper bolt actions you see on ebay but my is going to be homebrew. some round rod stock, cut off wheels, and welder.

I like your design, hartmen, but I'm a bit concerned about the sheer line of the wood immediately behind the trigger guard. It seems like the application of a linear force, such as recoil, would create a torsional force in this area, and put the grain of the wood under extension. In other words, if the stock were homogenous, such as a synthetic stock, you'd be okay; but wood has an inherent weakness when an extension force is applied perpendicular to the grain. (If I am unclear, the fault is my own for being unable to articulate this concept, so I apologize in advance.) May I suggest, in the interest of safety, trying out a scaled-down version of your design on a small scrap of pine or balsa before proceeding?

In any event, nice job! Please keep us posted!

since you mentioned it that is alot of torsional force going on! lol. ive already fired one round thru the gun at this stage of the build just for the hell of i to see how everything felt to me.

if it breaks i will simply just improve on the next one! always wear the eye and ear protection people! never know what may happen. may get a splinter! :what:

o.... the wood is walnut...i posted i thought it was cherry in previous post but i have learnt since then it is walnut.

did some more work on the MN. rear sight now removed. bolt action modified hopefully with enough room for scope. freakin scope base is taking forever to get here via mail. did a little more to the stock. me and wood just dont get along. i like working with metal more. :D

more updates! muzzle installed. what a b#$^@^ i had to tread the barrel and the first time around the muzzle was crooked. second time i got it dead nuts striaght.

worked on the stock some more. shaping up nicely i think :D

sidemount still hasnt come in the mail :(

first i completely disassembled the bolt action and removed the internal spring. i thing proceded with a cut off wheel and cut off the original bolt. i then used a piece of round rod and welded it in the original location. once everything was the way i wanted i welded the ball from the original bolt back on.

once i get the sidemount and scope on i might make further adjustments to the bolt to make it better. wont know until then.
