Nice job! Now go throw some lead (or bi-metal military surplus) downrange.

Honestly, I would work up some custom handloads, or if you don't reload I would buy some quality commercial ammo. That project deserves good ammo.

love my mosin - maybe one day i can do some work on it - it will hit a 7" metal plate at 100 yards - missing maybe one out of 5 consistantly

finally shot my nagant this afternoon.... great shooter, just have to invest in some sup ammo so i can afford to put lead downrange!

im aiming for 500yard to 1000 yard with mine. if i cant hit that range i will do more work on her. polish and shine anything and everything. do a trigger job ect. i dont think mine is that bad of a pull

here are a few pics of my latest mosin.
a finn M28-76 target rifle, one of around 900 that were imported and only a handfull of those have the scope mount base like mine does. i still have to load up some ammo for it before i take it to the range. i also need to get a handstop for the rail and as soon as my mill comes in i'm going to make the upper half of the scope mount since none of them were imported with the rifles and it seems they're not even available in finland anymore

hartman -- i would love to try mine out at that range - just dont have the eyes for iron sights - but sense i've seen your gun im getting really inspired

i already own a M44 but im going out tonight to try to track down a non-numbers matching 91/30 to mod for 600+yard shooting. going to scope it, make a new stock, bent bolt, UK59 barrel if i can find it, etc.

BTW, Richards Micro Stock has 2 Wildcat stocks, a thumb-hole and a regular both in semi-fancy walnut w/ studs for 91.00 and 64.00 in their special close out list. Was going to get the thumb-hole myself but funds aren't there so some one might as well pick them up. They are awesome stocks and would look great on your project Mosin. I was going to do the same only using a cut down stock barrel. Here's the link. http://www.rifle-stocks.com/bargain_list.htm

Also does any one know where I can get a Finn modified trigger with the 2 pins. There was a guy, MAKKO in Lahti, Finland that had some but he is sold out as well as Milsurp.com. Any help would be appreciated as I'd rather not have to make one.

there was a guy on gunbroker who did the conversions.he may still be there, do a search in the parts section.

dirty jim.....what is the aluminum type plate on the buttom of the gun infront of the trigger gaurd?

thats a target rail. they are used to mount handstops, bi-pods, shooting slings, etc. it also has a shorter one on the left side.

Just curious, what kind of mill you going to get... I was interested in a getting one. I generally thought a mill the size of a car would be great but after working in a fabrication class at UWM I came across two or three weeee sized mills that could probably make any part on a gun you would need not to mention they are way more affordable.

I just purchased a Tula, round receiver 91/30... saw the "ugly" rifles at a guns in Jax, FL.
It's amazing how the thing get's better looking. We brought it home in a friend's wife's car... I hope She has not seen the cosmoline stains in the floorboard, though it was probably hard for her to miss the smell of it..

Proud 2 rifle member of the club here. A '28 Dragoon conversion that shoots 6" 100 yard groups with surplus or Winchester and a '42 91/30 that I just put a Timney trigger in, bedded the stock and put a mojo trigger in. Trigger feels amazing at 2lbs but I sure had to hog out the stock to make it fit. Also had to cut part of my rear bedding pillar out to accomodate it. Got some .312" Hornady bullets to try out tomorrow. I bought my first one because the price was so good, now I want to buy more just because I see just how cool they are.

heycatman,
i've decided to buy the grizzly G0704, i should have it around the end of january or early febuary. its just about the smallest mill i would consider using but it also has a good amount of table travel. i knew several people who had the early versions and they cut very good. now its available with a r-8 spindle & power feed. a full size bridgeport would be nice and eventually i'll buy one but this will work fine for several years.

Thanks for the reply and nice choice.

I was looking at
http://www.cartertools.com/mill.html

and a controller
http://www.deepgroove1.com/gecko/geckodriver.htm

I'm stuck I have enough computer experience to use the cad programs and it's very tempting to throw down some designs and use the controller to do cutouts. Like walk away and come back 4 hours later to see your design cut out but..... something tells me that just having the hand controls is more than good enough and I might just be adding way too much to the table time and effort wise by trying to use it as a CNC machine instead of just hand controlled milling. Especially for the gun stuff tends to be pretty simple at times.

MN Classic Stock Project

I ordered 2 more MN 91/30's from Aim Surplusfor $69.95 each with all acessories, they are hard to pass up for such a bargain... I started on a sporter project shortly after my first purchase...I first located a nice black walnut blank, (airdried for 7.5 years), then using a combination of Larry Potterfield's plexiglass template & inspiration from the the "hartmen" method- i have cut the blank, and started inletting..I'll post pics as it progresses, but going the more classic look.

The inletting is a bit intimidating... I hate to admit, but i made a mistake on the very first cut i made on the stock, although it was repairable.

heycatman,
those aren't bad mills your looking at.
if you go to the forums at cnczone.com they do a lot of cnc conversions on small mills & lathes. you might get some good ideas there.

eventually i'd like to go cnc but since i have about 5 years experience on manual mills i'll stick with what i know for now. i did do a little bit of programing on a cnc lathe about 15 years ago.

mostly i'm planning on making square bridge scope mounts and my own rings. i may also market mosin rimless cartridge conversion kits with a threaded & short or long chambered barrel, modified bolthead, interuptor/ejector and a few other parts depending on the caliber used.
