omg. this day was crazy. i went out to a friends with the mn ive posted. she shot great. going longer and longer on the yardage. well after 20-30 rounds the muzzle blew off the barrel and flew about 30-50 feet away. i didnt get hurt. just made me a little ticked off. all that hard work. the only thing i can think of that happened is the gun created to much pressure and it stripped out all the threads i made on the barrel and muzzle.

my plans are to leave the muzzle off and recut the damaged end off the barrel. recrown and go on. sometimes i guess the gun makes the choice what acc. its suppose to have.

I'm new to the site and proud to say I am the owner of a 91/30. Powerful and very accurate. I shot a 1.5" group at 150yds open sighted!

An update on my Mosins:
Shot a 2" group with my '28 Tula using Prvi 182 grain loads and a 2.5" group with my .312" Hornady 150s and Varget.

Shot a 1.5" 3 shot group with my '42 Izevsh (Timney trigger, action bedded and Mojo sight). Shot it at 300 yards on a 12x12 steel plate and did reasonably well, though the front sight obscured the target completely.

Still working on getting all the cosmo out of the '43 Izevsh.

Now I'm spending plenty of time drooling over the Hex receiver 91/30s that AIM has.

PU mount question

I bought a 91/30 last year with a period correct mount and an authentic PU scope mounted. The mount was aluminum and the rear thumb bolt that tightens the unit and holds it in place was tightened too hard with a screw driver and broke the piece behind it comes in contact with. I would like to buy a steel mount to replace and do not where to start. I went to 7.62X54.net the official web site and they treated me like a POS and sent me to time out. All I asked them was the same question and they said they don't even talk about alterations or bubbified pieces of art. Heck this gun had PUs mounted on them in WW2 so I have no idea why they got their underwear all knotted up? Right now I have 8 Mosin-Nagants which is probably more than most of them have so I am doing my part to conserve history.

My first gun was the m91/30 named her jolee, ive since put the mossy oak monte carlo stock with the leapers rail system i love this gun its great for deer / elk hunting and ya cant beat havin an awesome hunting rifle for under 250, and doing all the work yourself make it that a better exerience

Ahh, our dear friends at 7.62x54.net.

I love that website. It is a wealth of valuable information for anyone interested in buying, collecting, shooting, maintaining the Mosin Nagant rifle.

But if you ever attempt to post on their forums, be warned: Those forums are only for very, very SERIOUS collectors.

The first time I posted there, I made the noobie blunder of using the abbreviation "Izzy" to refer to my Izhevsk rifle. Within moments the owner of the forums swooped in to rescue me. He pointed out my flagrant disregard for the dignity of finely crafted Russian weaponry, and reminded me that "The use of "cutesy" and improper terminology negatively impacts our standing as a group among our fellow collectors." (from Forum Rule #4) I shudder to think of the hordes of Mauser collectors huddled around their computers, sniggering to each other about those silly, childish Mosin owners.

The forum owner gave me the following instruction, to help me along in becoming a more mature, refined collector of surplus rifles:

"First, remove the cleaning rod from your rifle by unscrewing, and pulling straight out from the stock.
Next, unzip your trousers and allow them to fall to your ankles.
Then, place the cleaning rod behind and beneath yourself, assuming a "squatting" posture. Carefully align the cleaning rod wtih your rectum, and lower yourself toward the floor until the rod is fully inserted. Using a chair or table for balance will aid in a smooth insertion.
The last few inches can be problematic. Depending on your build, it can be difficult or awkward to bend over far enough to tap the rod home with a rubber mallet. If you find yourself unable to achieve complete insertion, just go as deep as you can, and use a little locktite to prevent the rod from backing out. The rest of us will do our best to overlook the resulting deficiency in your character and moral fiber."

I followed the directions carefully. Sure enough, the rod hung up a little with about an inch sticking out. I didn't have a mallet handy, but luckily, I also shoot black powder, and there was a wooden bullet starter on the work bench that I was using for balance. Just a few light taps and the rod slid firmly into place.

Now I am totally free from the debilitating burden of whimsical and immature posting. Having gained the recognition and approval of my fellow collectors has helped me to become a more useful member of my community, and I'll be darned if I don't *feel* like more of a man.

I know this post is a little long, but I hope that it has helped you. Please do re-post it to anyone who finds themselves in a similar circumstance, needing to speak with very serious collectors of historic rifles, but lacking the maturity to do so.

Good luck!

Aaron.

That's awesome. I just lurk there now. Similar experiences. It is a great resource and I learned a lot there but I like it here MUCH better!

Yaaaaaaaaa, 7.62X54r.net is awsome......it has a sister site, Gunboards, and quite often the same fellows , looking for more "Mosin".......
Like 7,62X54r.net, Gunboards "Collectors" forum is very specific, sorting fakes from facts the Byzentine myrids of yet uninterpreted makings, parts and variations on the variations, as well as extreamly rare and undiscover'd peices.....If your interested in History and the Mosin Nagant itself, its a great place. Several well known authors post there as well.

Yet, if you scroll down to the "Gunsmithing" forum on the boards, you will find friends with hacksaws, dremels and "Plans" awaiting your every modifycation, with opinions, ideas, Idonethats and answers.

I read both a couple times a day :D

Its your gun, do as you like.
I am a collector with 40+ Mosin's, as well as my one and only personal M-39 Sako that I make ends meet for my family with, as a Hunter/Gather'r/Fisherman.

I dont EVER modify any Mosin I aquire, but I do repair, and I have made some sweet parts guns(started with barreled actions) for Hunting that would get me banned from the collectors forum if they were to read of them on there ~~LOL!!~~

Too much info on Gunboards to ignore, if your a serious Mosin Junky :D

I just took my new (to me) Mosin Nagant 91/30 that I got from Aim Surplus out shooting today for the first time and I couldn't be any happier, it shot great. I don't think I missed a target all day! My friends are becoming Mosin Nutts too just like me... = ] This is a great gun to own and even better to shoot. Everyone should have a couple.

This is carlsako. I used to be 15guns the guy who started this thread. Looks like it was a good idea because it's still going strong. I got rid of my mosin nagant and I have a czech vz-24 8x57mm mauser now. The only things the mosin nagant seems to have over my mauser is better accuracy and a lower price.

Jotobo you shouldn't of shown your license plate in that picture. People can look up that plate online and find out where you live.

The picture with the license plate also shows he's well armed and practised ........ :D

Most criminals avoid that "type" of guy....~~LOL!!~~

Hartman that rifle is crazy. how much did it cost to turn it into that crazy beast? lol

Posted this in another link here before, but figured I needed to put it in the club. One of my recent builds. (1940 Tula 91/30)Got the trigger to 3 pounds, added stock, floated barrel, attached dampner, added a bent bolt, sanded and poslished "connection points in bolt" tapped reciever using a jig, mounted a bushnell elite and away we went. Might outshoot my 270!!

Two 91/30s one of them belongs to a friend of mine. The one with the sling is mine. They certainly are fun to shoot and ammo is cheap!

Mosin nagants are shoulder killers. Yeah I do love military surplus ammo but I always clean my rifle either after I shoot or the day after I shoot because I'm affraid of rust.
