The new subcompact 9mm from Sig

I'm interested to find out when it comes out. And it appears very much to be in the size range of the roughbar r9.

I think the market needs more of these ".380-sized" 9mm's. The only thing that has stopped me from buying a mouse gun is that I'm not so sure if I trust the .380 to do the job in a SD situation.

Looks like I found another future purchase though!

It's something I'll check out. I generally carry a P238, but it would be nice to step up to a 9mm in pocket-sized pistol. However, given Sig's somewhat less than stellar launch of the P238, I'll wait for others to do the beta testing before I consider buying.

It is sized between the Kahrs/KT P11, and the Rohrbaugh. It holds the about the same number of rounds as the Kahrs and the Rohrbaugh, but about half as many as the P11 can. Looks good!

I just now got this one to 99% realible....there is always, I think, a 1% chance that any auto will fail.

Never had a problem with this one...thus I carry most of the time....

I too will wait and let others do the beta testing on the Sig.

The P238 had a rough start when it was released (having just recently moved up to an overall reliable status), however, it wasn't a SIG SAUER design; it was a remake of the Colt Mustang. The P290 is a new SIG design, and I think it will have a start that more closely resembles the quality that we expect from SIG. The size is almost identical to any P238, and the weight is that of the P238 HD. So if you've every handled the P238 HD, you should know exactly what to expect carry-wise.

I am looking forward to this micro-compact very eagerly. I will definitely not be the first to buy it; but a year or so after its release (as long as the range reports are favorable), this will replace the .380 ACP micro-compact that I plan to buy in the next few months. I am not impressed with any of the micro 9mm Para models that are currently out (either because of quality, size, or price), but I think this will change my mind (and I'm sure that other manufactures will follow in the footsteps of this gun).

I haven't seen SIG SAUER say anything official on the matter of price (it definitely doesn't say anything about it on their website), but there are several places that have said $530 will be the MSRP. If that's true, it will be cheaper to pick up this model than a P238.

Here are the reported list prices so far...

"MSRP: P290 Nitron, 9mm, SIGLITE NS, 6-rd. mag. $530.00. P290 Two-Tone, 9mm, SIGLITE NS, 6-rd. mag. $550.00"

The P290 at 20.5 ounces is getting close (within 2.5 ounces) to the weight of my S&W 649 .357. My 442 is only 15.8 ounces.

My Rohrbaugh only weighs 14.4 ounces including the empty mag and the carbon fiber grips.

I would imagine Glock would lose out on sales if this 9mm proved to be as reliable as a glock 26 but as small and slim as a .380 pocket pistol. It certainly has my attention.

I'm pretty sure it is aimed at the Kahr market...given it's slimness and magazine capacity. It also addresses the pleas to Glock for a slim single stack pistol....and it is priced right at about $500

One question outstanding is is the trigger will be a DA like the DAK or like the 250

Im looking to buy a pocket gun right after X-mas and the Sig P238 was in the lead as i owned one before i dearly regret getting rid of it. Im a 1911 guy at heart.

But the P290 being about the same size as the P238 and most likley cheaper and can shoot 9mm i have no doubt what i would choose.
Specs read that it is the same exact size as the P238 and about the same as a PM9.
Id go PM9 if it didn't cost as much as 2 guns.

Dont get me wrong im not ruling out the P238 even tho i find the .380 ammo not the best for the fact of its higher price and less choices, I feel it will work just as well as this would be a pocket gun when i need to run to the gas station real quick and dont feel like holstering my 1911 on.
I wont be carrying the P290 as a main gun either and just a quick pocket gun also.
Id say these cases are about 1% of my carrying time that i would be relying on that gun only. So the P238 and .380 ammo is not a down side.

But i want a 9mm i can shoot at the range affordably and enjoy, It may need a slip on grip for the day tho.
All else could fail if i find a used PM9 at that time of purchase, But i think buying a new gun is better than taking a chance of buying someone else's lemon.

According to the folks I talked to at Sig today, they haven't actually set the final price yet, and they don't expect to have it on the market before the SHOT SHOW...

It appears to be smaller then my SS/AL Colt 9mm. I like no manual safety feature but what exactly does one hold on to while shooting it?

Bastage! LOL!

Seriously, I'm a happy P238 owner (they're out there) and the idea of something 9mm-ish in a similar size range (ie: smaller than a G26) really gets my attention. Like others here I'm happy to let the beta testing commence with another pocketbook. If and when good reports start trickling in, however, sign me up. Two thumbs way up on the concept on paper...
